Has anybody ever heard any Witnesses utter that old saying "Reading The Magazines™ for 10 years [or whatever] is equivalent to getting a college education?" A couple of things are amusing about this. One is its utter and complete falsehood--what a crock! It amazes me that anybody could say that with a straight face.
The second amusing thing is that this is NOT something the Society says (unless I missed it in my research.) It's something that the rank & file says. The sentiment expressed is: "Don't worry about missing out on college. You will get the same personal development and learning from reading the magazines." This betrays a feeling on the part of the person saying it: that college is something to be missed, that putting it aside is a regret to be assuaged. It's interesting that people in the R&F have the good sense to realize this even though they're told in the Publications™ over and over again how meaningless and pointless college is.

Oldest living Holocaust survivor is a JW
by under_believer inhttp://www.portervillerecorder.com/articles/2006/05/16/news/local_state/news08.txt .
what it doesn't talk about is how rutherford tried to conciliate with the nazis in the 30's, failed, and then deliberately ordered the witnesses there into a position that would put them in harm's way, when there were other things they could have done that would have preserved their "christian conscience" and not gotten thousands of them killed.
i wonder if that poor old brave guy had known that, whether he would still be a witness?

Return Visits (tm) -- something I'm thinking of doing
by merfi inmy little book, all organized into "town", "rural -- by township", and other towns is full of rvs.
i wasn't all that great at this, as i was not good at getting back to these people that i left stuff with, but i have a few.
what i'd like to do is go through my rv book and "call" on these people again, only this time with an apology and perhaps some tidbit of real 'truth' -- silentlambs, mexico/malawi etc.. anyone else ever feel like trying to 'right a wrong' or similar?.

I have always been indifferent to poor at "witnessing." I have very little in that particular regard to feel guilty about or to "right." I am lucky.

It is not your computer. This forum is all screwed up and needs some serious maintenance. The only reliable source of new threads is the "Active Topics" link.

JWs and the lack of high emotional states
by Lady Lee injws and the lack of high emotional states
the wts capitalizes on a couple of mood states.
the biggest is fear.

/agree on the fear thing. Even though I am no longer buying any of it intellectually, the residual fear is still with me. I understand, even, that mental conditioning produces physical changes in the brain--actual rewiring--and that the mental path to this fear is very short. That's why it's still there. I will probably live with it for the rest of my life.
As far as the flat affect, it's definitely there too. It's worse in some congregations than it is in others, but it is omnipresent. I currently attend one that is especially bad--the blandest, most boring congregation I've ever been at. -

Have I changed?
by I-follow-the-narrow-path inyesterday my ex-boyfriend came into town, several months ago who moved away and we had to break off our relationship.
the relationship was rocky; however, before he was going to move, so it was easy to let him go.
we reconciled as he was away and we are good friends.

Again, Elizabeth--the fact that you're asking the question at all gives me a great deal of hope for you. Keep asking those questions. Everything you are doing is exactly what the Society wants you to do, exactly what a "good JW" is supposed to do--but you are coming on here and saying that you aren't sure it's quite right. You're coming on here and asking us if you've changed.
I think you have. But not so much that you can't recognize that something is off.
Good luck--keep asking. Keep questioning. -

Apparently...
by ballistic inmy computer may be running counterfeit software.
oh my gosh, how did that happen?
-
under_believer
Apparently, someone decided to point out one of the common buzzwords the Society uses in their literature. Evidently, whether that was the original poster's intent or not, it is what it morphed into. Reasonably, then, we would all do well to meditate on this delightful, correct thread.

Double Standards?
by OpenFireGlass intalk about a dysfunctional family life.... did anyone else experience growing up in a dub family that had a double standard for siblings?.
my younger sister was allowed too: have new kids on the block posters on her wall, as well as gotten taken to a nkotb concert... have & play a keyboard.
pick her own music, & have a boom box in her room.
-

We had a situation where siblings were not treated equally nor fairly, but I don't believe it was related to being JW's. It had more to do with gender and with how demanding each sibling was.

Witnessing at school
by I-follow-the-narrow-path ini was in class and by these two women (one who was a christian and the other student i am unsure of).
i asked them, randomly, "do you know much about jehovah's witnesses?
" -- they both said "yes" and the non-christian said "i had a jw friend and he really hated it... he disaproved of what they taught" -- i started to talk about shunning and disfellowship.

Don't be sorry for ranting.
I'm not a psychologist, but I am told that cutting and other forms of self-harm often have a positive statistical correlation (this means that they sometimes are caused by) emotional, physical, or sexual abuse. Your boyfriend is wrong--not everybody has those thoughts.
I cannot BELIEVE that any professional would talk to you about this and tell you that you are doing okay, or that your mother would make you stop going after four visits with no improvement. Did you tell these people about the cutting?
Anyways--if there's anything in your power that you can do to get back in to a professional, I strongly recommend it. You're at a very vulnerable time of your life right now.
And PLEASE stop to think before you make any major decisions about religion, wait a while until you are feeling a bit more stable.
