I don't think anyone can conclusively pin an exact time frame on a fade. What really is a "fade" anyway? I think there is a period where you have to find yourself and really analyze your belief system. That time is your own, and you will find people that will agree and disagree with you, as you find yourself as a person. One day you might wake up and find you have a completely different set of values, beliefs, and interests than you ever had in the org. At that point you will be so excited you won't even think about the concept of fading.

i've just found out something that's going to be a massive thing in my congregation when it gets out.
it all starts with a former jw, who faded away probably about a decade ago, and then moved away, came out as a homosexual a few years ago.
he was never baptised, and he left so long ago, he never got chased up or disfellowshipped.
I also feel bad for the guy. I was in the "pioneer assist" program with an MS who came out of the closet on me and confessed he was in love with me, but that he wasn't gay because he didn't "approve" of that lifestyle. After I told him I had no problem with his orientation but wasn't in any way interested in that type of relationship he took off and downed a bottle of tylenol. Fortunately he was ok. He is married to a very hardcore Witness woman and is still living his lie, albeit in South Africa now. I miss him, he was a really good guy, but just couldn't be honest with anyone but me (including himself) and is still stuck in the cult repressing his true self. I wonder how many more are like him, torturing themselves. Sad.

There would always be an entourage of guys in "good standing" who could waltz back and talk about sports and anything else they felt like (including making fun of anyone in the hall) under the pretence that they were "pillars" of the congregation and had "important" things to whisper to eachother.

i just wonder because with the stresses of earning a living, taking care of immediate family, and getting in little free time that is available, why would anyone want to take on this extra job at no charge, answer to more bosses, and be submited to endless critisizing behind your back for decisions.

I agree with you W.Once. My father became an elder because he actually believed it was the "truth." This was after 20+ years of "inactivity". He died suddenly of a heart attack when I was eighteen so I never had the opportunity as a grown man to ask him exactly the reason for the complete turnaround (though I have my suspicions). The point being... I remember seeing my father pale knowing he'd had no sleep the night before because he'd been roped into a J.C., and I remember him actually disagreeing with our Gestapo of a P.O. once and it going to the "higher ups". I really think there are a lot of incredible, humble men in that organization, but they really have no power, because they never sought it. It's a fairly easy equation if we really look at it. Personally, I was told I was "perfect" for the position of Oversight if I just got my hours up. Never got there.
