I remember reading somewhere (maybe in something of Alan Watts) that Buddhism teaches there are two ways to approach reality: one way is to follow the "trackless path" on your own, side by side with your fellow travellers, but on your own path. This is called the "way of the monkey." The other is the "way of the kitten," who believes it needs a guide to help it along a path that's already been trodden. The way of the kitten is considered inferior because it depends on the illusion that there's someone or something greater out there that can tell us how to live. Hence the Buddhist saying, "If you meet the Buddha on the road, kill him!"

The Bible. Despite many reasons to dismiss it why do so many believe?
by nicolaou ina man cannot walk on water, truly dead people do not come back to life and 1 + 1 will never equal 3. these are just a few of the absurd impossibilities that one must swallow and accept in order to 'believe' the bible.. why does the belief that the bible is 'truth' persist?.
men cannot survive a fiery furnace unscathed, the sun cannot stand still in the sky and donkeys cannot speak hebrew.
unless you believe the bible.

I managed to apologise to someone I used to shun.
by nicolaou inin fact, over the past year there have been two such instances.
a few weeks ago i was at a depot i visit once a month and i noticed someone who had been disfellowshiped about 8 or 9 years ago.
i waited for him to finish his conversation and then approached him.

Literally wiping away tears. A DFed person so beaten down by the cruelty of JW shunning that a small kindness makes her break down and cry. What a bunch of soulless, shriveled-hearted people from a small-minded, hate-mongering religion.

***The problem is, some people will quote and try to use EVERYTHING ... for me, that can be a problem because of conflicting ideas.***
That's the problem isn't it? Who gets to choose what parts of the Bible are relevant? If it were a clearly written book with no internal contradictions, there would be no problem. As it is however, anyone can come up with literally thousands of absolutely "true" interpretations, and the conflicts arising from those interpretations have caused centuries of misery and death. Whatever small value there is in the Bible, the struggle to understand it and defend that understanding is not worth the game. -

Hi, supersonic,
The people here are a cross-section of the real world. You'll find people who are kind, angry, bawdy, panicked, insensitive, funny, frightened, thoughtful, smart. We squabble, make up, tease, support and comfort one another. If you stay around long enough to read a fair sampling of posts, you'll find a lot to think about, and I hope to hear your thoughts about them. -

***Who could argue with such a quote?***
Then what do you need the rest of the Bible for? Just type that quote on a placard and throw the rest of the Bible away. -

How False Can You Be Now?
by serotonin_wraith inhi, my first post but i'll get more into my background later.. i was raised as a jw for sixteen years, one good thing that came from it was my learned ability to lie extremely convincingly using body language and speech.
not just through how they taught you to act, but by leading a double life for so long just to survive childhood.. so how about you?
how false are you able to act now and do you find it helps?

I never learned how to lie well--that's why I was such a lousy JW. Did learn how to spot liars, though. -

Herdlike mentality at it's best.....
by AK - Jeff insitting in conversation with a friend this morning in my fav coffee shop.
in walk the 'service group' for the day, three sisters whom i have known for decades, followed by the po of the congregation i used to be part of before we left 2+ years ago.. the sis's were in the place a full two minutes before the po showed up.
they all saw me and immediately averted the eyes away from me.

I was never DFed, but a few years after my fade, I caught sight of a sister in a restaurant who, when she saw me, literally turned her head away and put her nose up in the air. She looked so ridiculous I started laughing and that's been my reaction to snubbing ever since.

What are the most insincere things JWs say?
by Spectrum init really makes me angry when they say i love jehovah.
they don't know what they are talking about.
if they read with an open mind the carry-ons of this cruel mesopotanian god they would feel ridiculous and embarrassed for putting this god before their family, their children.

I get discouraged at the middle-aged view in the mirror, but then I think of how I was at 25--better looking, sure, but a dimwit JW who didn't know which way was up. Now in my 50s, I can claim at least a little discernment, a little wisdom, a little peace of mind, and most of my adult life spent the way I wanted it spent, not the way some old men in Brooklyn say I should have lived. I wouldn't trade that for any amount of youth and good-looks.
