Mack Reynolds - NOT a Jehovah's Witness, but led a very interesting life!
by VM44 inmack reynolds was a science fiction writer, but he didn't just sit at a typewriter and write all day.
sounds like he had more than one "indiana jones" like adventure during his lifetime.
from judith merril's introduction to "the pacifist", taken from 10th annual edition: the year's best sf.. mack reynolds is as different from arthur clarke in background, education, temperament, and personality as two good science-fictionists can be.

Is the WTS guilty of modern-day idolatry?
by parakeet inromans 1:25: they exchanged the truth of god for a lie, and worshiped and served created things rather than the creatorwho is forever praised.
amen.
do you all agree that the purpose of sacred texts is to bring believers closer to god?

"' thing is .......... who's jehovah ?"
The Jehovah that JWs pray to is a poisonous, vengeful, hateful creation of the WTS, the idol they have set up to control their adherents through fear. -

The Price for Immortality
by Farkel insuppose that people live forever.. strangely, the population of each city splits in two: the laters and the nows.. the laters reason that there is no hurry to begin their classes at the university , to learn a second language, to read voltaire or newton, to seek promotion in their jobs, to fall in love, to raise a family.
for all these things, there is an infinite span of time.
in endless time, all things can be accomplished.

I wonder who would get bored first--the Laters or the Nows?

When I was a JW kid, the concept of eternal life seemed attractive, like a school recess that never ends. Enjoyment forever.
Now well into middle age, I've come to believe that we age emotionally as well as physically. The mind seems to work in tandem with the physical to prepare us for the inevitable: A beginning, a middle, and an end--the natural course of all life.
As I grow older, I feel less fear of death than I did at 30. Now, the idea of eternal life seems the ultimate in boredom. After the first few thousand years, what would be left to talk about? I get bored just thinking about it. -

Romans 1:25: “They exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshiped and served created things rather than the Creator—who is forever praised. Amen.”
Do you all agree that the purpose of sacred texts is to bring believers closer to God? I believe the Bible’s value is not intrinsic--by itself, without any connection with the divine, it’s simply a collection of ancient accounts, parables, and proverbs. Its value to believers lies in its being a guide, a pointer to ultimate divinity.
My opinion is that the WTS’s utter preoccupation with scriptural interpretation has come between those who wish to worship and the object of worship itself – God, divinity, ultimate reality, whatever you want to call it.
The Society’s constant focus on scripture, amplified to the last degree in their endless publications, has in itself become a form of idolatry. Instead of allowing God to manifest himself in the hearts of his followers, they have inserted themselves as the ultimate authority. In effect, they have replaced a graven idol with a written idol.
The consequence of this is the JWs’ obsession with dry written words instead of experiencing the divine in their lives. They’re like the unenlightened disciples in the Zen proverb who, observing the master point at the moon, gazed at the hand instead of the moon.

Are you internet dependent?
by greendawn inare you dependent on the internet?

Yes, and I adore it. You can live in a hut in the remotest part of the world, but as long as you have a good internet connection, you can get anything you need.

What was your dream?
by daystar ini was such a romantic when i was younger.
i entertained dreams that there was this one, beautiful woman out there that was meant for me, and i for her.
i can remember thinking about these sort of things from a very early age, maybe as young as five years old.. this woman (girl then) haunted my dreams, literally.

You have a poet's soul, daystar, although I'm still trying reconcile the wistful recounting of your beautiful dream with your ferocious-looking avatar. Sort of Beauty and the Beast.
I'm well into middle age; my youthful dreams are long gone. But the idea of living on a sailboat in a remote tropical locale sometimes provides a few pleasant daydreams. -

In my state, prospective jurors are selected from voter registration lists. Since JWs don't vote, they don't get selected for jury duty. Is that the connection, maybe??? Otherwise, I don't know what the objection could be--being a juror is being part of the beast, or Caesar, or .......?????

My head is spinning from this thread. Threads like this remind me of family Thanksgiving movies where everybody talks at once and squabbles break out but everybody hugs at the end and warm fuzzy feelings prevail. (Although this is much better than a cheesy Thanksgiving movie!)
