*huge* fan -- i've read all of his books, except for the screenplay and most of his writing book -- macabre... something? i have copies of most of his books, as well. and i agree about the movie translation -- they rarely do justice to the stories, although delores claibourne was good, and i hear misery is also done well.

Birthdays—Simple Deconstruction of the JW Rationale
by AuldSoul into deconstruct the jw rationale surrounding birthdays, a few simple guidelines should be followed.. (1): don't waste any energy trying to convince a jw that birthdays are not pagan, if they suggest that, readily agree.
whether or not the celebrations are pagan turns out to be a non-issue that distracts from the main point.. (2): stay focused on the fact that jws disfellowship people for celebrating birthdays.. (3): stress the point that there should always be clear scriptural reason for disfellowshipping someone.
ask them often throughout the discussion whether this is the case, get them to reinforce this need to themselves.. (4): remember, the first goal is deconstructing their rationale, not giving them a new rationale, not convincing them that celebrating birthdays is a good thing.. once you have these well in mind, the deconstruction can begin.. jw rationale, in brief:.

Recent E-mail Exchange with my Mother
by bavman indear greg: just a note to thank you for the card and for remembering us on our anniversary.
we had a very nice 45th anniversary.
the only thing that would have made it better is if you and ***(my sister) could have celebrated with us .

all the time. we had a group of people all around the same age who went regularly. laundromats, gas stations, hospitals, etc. i kinda liked it (compared to door-to-door), because you didn't have to talk to many folks -- just leave the magazines and get out.

JW children - conditionally loved?
by Gregor inwhen they reach a certain age they are expected to "sign up" (get baptized).
in many cases if they choose not to their parents essentially "disfellowship" them.
so a lot of children get baptized under pressure from the parents and when they fail to live the jw life and get df'd the folks are the harshest shunners.

once i (or anybody else my age) got baptized, my mom would (half)-jokingly say: "it's like the mafia. either you're in or you're dead." ha. ha. she still feels that way -- but i'm not certain she *realized* that half of her was not joking.

my mom went to a door once, and the householder had a goose that tried to attack her, so my mom just grabbed its neck (she didn't know what else to do), and gave her presentation while holding the goose.
another time i went to the door and there was a mirror behind it, and the door had a big window, so you could see inside. i knocked, but nobody answered. i happened to look at the mirror, and saw the guy crawling behind his couch to hide from us. we made eye contact, but he still didn't answer the door.

"WHAT??? what did you just read to me? your religion is crazy!!" have to agree with her there...
