I don't remember them mentioning that movie, but I was only 16 that summer, so I was probably cruising around looking for chicks....I do remember them saying something about Nirvana and since that was religious term, the band was demonic....I think I must've bought every Nirvana album 3 times growing up, since my parents kept throwing them out!

1993 Circuit Assembly Demonstration that Involved "The Firm" (1993)
by FirstInLine ini remember in 1993 at one of the circuit conventions that they did a drama in which a young adult woman living with her parents was going to go see "the firm" (1993) with some other young adult jws.
when she told her parents of her plans they expressed their concerns and she pleaded that sometimes a really good movie is ok to go see if it is rated r. she heard from reliable sources that there wasnt anything really bad with it like gratuitous sex, drugs or demonic themes.
in the end her parents convinced her that jehovah would still not approve because it was rated r. she was reminded that even worldly people recognize it is a bad movie because they are the ones that gave it the r rating.

Do you think some people are better off with the borg?
by new light ini work with someone who is df'ed, actually my cousin.
he is trying to get reinstated.
we got into a semi-heated discussion and i gave him a lot of my anti-wt viewpoints, trying to get him to think for himself.

I think this is a loaded question, which is why we have so many various answers...so I'll attempt to respond anyway.
My mom is better off being a JW (in the borg sounds like a cult term in itself, the cult of xjw's) because her life previously she has only known emotional abuse, alchoholism, drug abuse and a really rough childhood. While I agree, she CAN find happiness outside of JW's, she initially found happiness within, almost 25 years ago. To leave now, would basically kill my mom. and despite everything, i love my mom, and i'm glad she's found something that makes her happy.

Second Hand Lions and Lost in Translation
by Mulan indave and i are both suffering with miserable colds, so yesterday we rented 4 movies!!
we watched two of them.. .
dave laughed throughout "lost in translation" because he has worked in japan, and so much of it was very familiar to him.

uh, you missed the point. lost in translation was great exactly because it wasn't about sex.

JW cannots........
by Nan ini couldn't believe this list of cannots that jws have to adhere to!
i already knew about the holidays, blood tranfusions, the pledge, etc.
there's maybe one or two that i would agree are for your own good, but the rest are ridiculous!!

Tacoma Dome Parking Scandal
by VM44 inremember the tacoma dome parking scandal?.
it was reported a few years ago that the wt would charge witnesses for parking at the tacoma dome even though the contract with the dome stated that no parking charges were to be made.
of course the people in the kingdom halls were not told that, only reminded to be sure to pay for their parking!.

yeah that makes sense...i'm sure they negotiated that, and then tried to collect on top of that...
my only point was that the city of Philadelphia isn't as stupid as the city of Tacoma...they never let parking go w/ out city of Philadelphia employees...so we had to pay every year.

We bought both of these movies and loved both of them. I especially loved Lost in Translation, I thought Bill Murray was absolutely brilliant. I'm not sure if he'll win the best actor nod vs. Sean Penn though....Mystic River was equally brilliant. We rented Swimming Pool this weekend, which was fantastic, highly recommended.

Could a JW pharmacist give out the morning after pill?
by Atilla inthis subject came to mind a few days ago when a saw a news article about a pharmacist working at a eckerd drug store in texas.
a woman came in for the morning after pill but the pharmacist who was very religious-not a dub-went in the back of the store and prayed about his situation.
he says that god told him that this wasn't ok, so he along with the other two pharmacists refused to give the pills to the woman.

I remember working in a grocery store when I was 14 (12 years ago) and at first I was told that I would not be able to sell cigarettes or stock them....I think they eased up on that over that year maybe....which means, I think they would be able to sell the pill. but i could be totally wrong here, beats me.

I've never been to the DA out here, but I remember when we went to Veterans Stadium in Philly that you had to buy your tickets in advance, then your tickets would come in....although I think Philadelphia made the JW's use city employees for parking, so I don't believe it was a scandal.

Stupidest thing a JW ever told you
by Nosferatu inwhat is the stupidest thing a jw ever told you?
we all know that they say a lot of stupid things, but what really topped the cake?.
for me, it was an elder telling me i was progressing really well when my meeting attendance was down and my field service hours were slipping.

#1 Stupidest thing said from the platform:
This would be from Brother Dentler's visit to the Willow Grove, PA congregation, late fall 2001
"people in NYC are getting AIDS and other diseases because of TAINTED BLOOD in the aftermath of 9/11"
uh, there weren't that many survivors that needed blood, dumbass. He totally made it up. My wife and I have commented many times on the fact that he looked around right before he said it, like he knew he was getting ready to tell a whopper.
