it's strange and i'm not sure if it's because of my upbringing, but i just can't be pro-choice.

i just don't see the rational justification (other than a situation where the mother's life is in danger).

i don't, however, see a problem with stuff like the morning-after pill, when the embryo is just a group of cells with no consciousness.

I'm atheist, I wouldn't ban abortion, but I do find some reasons for abortions to be bad reasons. Mainly the kind of thing in beksbks' post.

What pain will a fetus/embryo/bunch of cells feel being terminated before birth, as compared to a lifetime of being unwanted/uncared for? Only the mother could decide something like that.

I don't think anyone can say 'a lifetime' of being unwanted/uncared for. That's a massive leap. Children usually leave home between 18 and 24, that's not a lifetime. They still have most of their life to go, and they can make it what they want.

If the parents don't want the child or feel they can't look after it, there are plenty of couples who would like to adopt because they can't have their own. If orphanages are bad places, then they should be regulated better by outside agencies so that they reach a better standard, just like we do with any place of care.

I know it may be better for children to have both their parents, but many live with just the one. Many have parents who died when they were still babies, yet they don't always go and kill themselves as soon as they understand. They just get used to a new situation.

If quality of life was important (it is, but if it's important enough to deny life) then wouldn't it be better to go to the third world and kill young people so that they didn't have to grow up in an area with disease and starvation? It's not what we do. We help people. We try to change things for the better.

Unless the mother can see into the future, I can't see how she could know what kind of life her child will have. Especially in the develped world where the Government gives money to those with little. Even the poorest families today are usually better off than citizens living 500 years ago in huts with open fires, straw for beds and gruelling farming work. We wouldn't kill them (if we could), even though their standard of living isn't as good as now.

I think children should have happy lives, and that can be acheived if people help. We don't have to deny them life for that reason when there are plenty of alternatives.

You could say that while her words hurt you, you understand it's not her fault. She's just the unfortunate victim of a cult, and one of the characteristics cults have is the shunning of former members and a very black and white 'us versus them' mentality. As much as you feel like it, responding unkind would only reaffirm her belief that all non-JWs are nasty. You could offer to help her see why you no longer attend, but that you understand another characteristic of a cult is to dismiss all criticism of the group without listening to it.

i never used to wonder about death, or what comes after, because i had all the answers!

but now i really wonder, but not with fear....it feels odd, and i am curious.

this planet and universe are so incredible and complex that to me it defies logic that someone must have had a creative hand it.

The second part in particular talks about how the universe became more complex over billions of years from much simpler beginnings. It was gradual and natural (with evidence to back it). It answers the question beautifully, whereas the (much more complex) creator needs explaining. I think it's on the torrents.

Joy Or Sorrow When You First Found Out It Was False?

for me, it was joy.

i was raised in the religion, and i always figured i'd be dying along with 6 billion others because i hated the meetings, the preaching work and the rules, morality and threats of 'jehovah'.

i did not want it to be true.. for others here, finding out it was false was a hard time to go through.. as well as asking which feelings you had at first (joy/sorrow/or add your own) i have a follow up question for those who found it hard- what was it that made the impending deaths of 6 billion people okay for you?

It looks like having a purpose with everything laid out for you seems to be something people needed/liked. I always figured it was mainly just the paradise and better health people were sad to see wasn't true. That part never really appealed to me, maybe when I was very young it did. I wasn't that keen on living forever going to meetings and worshipping a being I didn't like, and seeing animals at peace would have soon got boring.

I don't like my life planned out either. I like to decide for myself what happens. I think in the future I may do a poll to see whether those who wanted it to be true were more likely to end up turning to another faith afterwards, and those who didn't became atheist. There might be a connection.
