I have to press this for your children's sake, and you kinda left the private debate/chat we were having a while back. This religion seems to be what you need/want, and if so, good for you. But can you please allow your children to know about other beliefs, not just yours? I really don't think it would be fair on them to only know about what you believe. They're not you.

Did You Stay In Because of the Fear?

Growing up amongst JWs, I saw the core beliefs as a threat. Be a JW, or die horribly. But no one I knew ever admitted this, it was all about 'loving jehovah'. Now that you're free, look back for a moment at why you stayed in so long. Was it because you 'loved jehovah' or was it really because you didn't want Jehovah to kill you?
I used to think, okay, take away armageddon and paradise, would these people in the hall around me even be here? Is it truly about 'loving jehovah' or was it the carrot and the stick approach that held people captive? Thoughts?

Opinion peice on Athiests
by SickofLies inthere seems to be a lot of hostility on the board toward atheists still and a lot of comments floating around like atheists are to preachy.
well i want to take a quick minute and deal with some of these issues.
to begin with, to make any statement regarding atheists in general would be false for several reasons.

please keep in mind that "historically" the number 666 denotes antichrist/imperfection and the number 777 denotes christ/perfection
Uhh, because it's written in the Bible? Let's just stop the circular logic there.

ATHEISM - Better World When Christian Are Gone?

Trygon, I remember a topic in which you were concerned about Muslims getting special treatment in the UK. You were opposed to it, even though Islam is a religion, just as Christianity is. You spoke up (and good for you, why not?). I don't think you want Muslims killed, or their religion banned. You just want equality, a fair system. You don't want their beliefs affecting you. Now that's exactly how atheists can feel about Christianity (and other religions). You do understand where we're coming from, it's just harder to see it when you are in the group that is being spoken about.

Islam Diss'ed Again....
by chappy inseems a 54 year old british school teacher who is teaching grammer school classes in the sudan has committed a despicable act by blastpheming and showing no respect for the prophet!

'moderate' (whatever that means)
Those who cherry pick the peaceful passages from the koran and ignore the ones calling for people to be killed.
I wonder if these moderate ones still believe Gillian will burn forever in Allah's hell for not being Muslim. Or perhaps they ignore that part too.

Over the past couple of years I've noticed some books by atheists doing quite well and plenty of debates about religion and gods. Are you trying to make a link between that and atheists wanting to murder religious people or outlaw religion? If so, don't panic. You have it completely wrong.

personal beliefs re: life after death...none since leaving JW.... You?
by oompa ini do not have a clue anymore.
having just accepted my own mortality, what the hey does happen at death?
i never thought about it before, because i did not have to.

I don't 'believe in something' after death, because none of us know.
Most of the time, I think it'll just be the same as it was before we were born. No big problem, something we won't even be aware of.
But if our true selves (if there is such a thing) carry on after death, will that be aware? It's something I'm not sure about, but I can't go beyond my imagination when I think about it.

-Turns out I was ALWAYS an "apostate".
by Awakened07 ina recent post by jcanon (of all people, lol) jogged my memory and brought back (repressed?
) memories from when i was just a kid.
i remembered that i was constantly thinking - thinking of all that i learned as a jw (and at school/elsewhere), but i was always able to look at it from "outside the box" even as a kid.

Oh I was always against it in my head - and had questions like 'Hmm, if my parents were of a different religion, would I even care about all this?' Kids are smarter than people give them credit for. The closest I ever got to 'God' was at the age of about 12 when I actually prayed without being made to (for a few months), but looking back I was just sucking up to God so that he wouldn't kill me.
Apart from that, I don't think I ever liked it or embraced it. I was on the outside looking in too.

he was a devout christian...and i had been yearning for years for some direction.

The religious difficulties aside, why would you want to go back to an abusive man?

Do you think religion is part of our genes?
by Undecided init seems religion has played a part in man's life through history.
it has been good and bad, but seems to control society in some way or another.
is there some brain function that causes humans to develope the need for a diety?

I think it's part of our genes in a way.
As a child, it's in our genes to trust whatever our parents say. That's why so many people follow in the religious footsteps of their parents.
As Satanus said, many people are just sheep. They like to fit in, so it could be to do with that too. Being raised a JW, I hate same group thinking now, and I try to be individual in most things.
