Why does an atheist have to disprove anything?
by digderidoo ini have noticed alot of debate in posts lately between an atheist argument and a christian one.
it seems to me that the atheist is asked to disprove god's existence.
some times these debates have started to get personal with one side attacking the other with insults and i do not want to start another argument like these.. but i dont get it?

Yes, it's about who has to prove their position. Regardless of who brings the topic up, it's still the believer who has to prove their position, and if they don't want to, nobody will force them to.

Just as long as you agree with the basic premise. Apply it to person G.

Person X: Ah what's this? A topic called 'Christians, You Are Wrong' in a public forum. Should I click on it? Hmm, okay.
A whole two paragraphs. Should I read it? I know the topic heading, it's a fair bet to assume it's all about how Christians are wrong.
I've read it, and I don't think I'm wrong. I'm going to respond and give a bunch of good reasons for my belief, like my belief makes me happy and God must be real because things are complicated. That'll show 'em. I'll also tell them they brought it up first. I wasn't pushing my beliefs (ah yes, I must remember to write a post explaining how it's my right to indocrinate my kids once I'm done here) so what right do they have to call me on mine?
Ooh, a response!
Person Y: Were you forced to read this thread?
Person X: No.
Person Y: Would you agree everyone here has the right to give their opinion here, no matter who may disagree with it?
Person X: Well, yes.
Person Y: Then can you please explain why you feel I'm forcing you personally to read and respond to my thoughts, when you didn't have to open the topic and you don't ever complain about other Christians being the first to promote their beliefs in topics no atheist is forced to read?
Person X: Um, what if I was talking about real life situations?
Person Y: Take it up with them.

what is there to find "beyond" reason? (inspired by BurnTheShips)
by inkling ini was struck by the honesty of a recent comment by burntheships,.
but i didn't want to hijack the thread.... [w]e see a lot of threads where atheists try to disprove that god exists.
atheism is a universal negative, how can one know for a certainty that something does not exist without infinite knowledge?

"This is complex, so it must have been designed!"
Nope. It's complex, so it must be complex. We're limited creatures. Of course we couldn't design something as complex as the DNA code at the moment, but how arrogant to assume we're at the apex of natural thought in the universe! "Something must have designed it, because we, fantastic humans who basically just came down from the trees (in geological time), can't design it." No, it just means that there are natural things in this universe that are beyond our ability to copy. With complex DNA in particular, it developed naturally over time from simpler beginnings. It's not random either. We're looking at the code that survived. Most were so poorly 'designed' they didn't. We're looking at the up to date (more complex) version of it because we've arrived late on the scene. We never even knew it existed not too long ago.
Look at the sun! An immense ball of light and heat travelling across the sky. Humans couldn't make one of those and move it, therefore Ra is pulling it along in his chariot! Some things don't change.
"This impresses me, so it must have been designed!"
Yes, how amazing that we have a planet that supports life and how wonderful stars look. Except, most of the universe does not support life (lucky roll of the dice would seem to be applicable to place our planet in the right place). Stars are 'created' when gases swirl closer together due to gravitational pull. They may look good, but they still have natural beginnings. If I thought they'd been designed, I'd be wondering why they were designed to blow up at the end of their lives and destroy surrounding planets, as our sun is going to.
The great thing about Ellie's testimony is that there is good reason to believe something more happened than just her falling to the water- the 18 hours of static. The book lists other things too - her watch showing a later time for example.
The only thing that suggests a god is human ignorance, as it always has been with every other god people have worshipped.

God weighs in
by nvrgnbk inif you can't perceive my existence you're not really looking.. there are special people that can.
don't be bothered by the fact that these people can't agree on anything about me.. the point is that they believe and that's good enough for me.. how shall i reward them?
i'll be there when they're suffering.. watching.. admiring their faith.. though they disagree about how their faith will ultimately work out, it makes life easier for them somehow.. the poor fools that don't know me are left to suffer all by themselves.. you're all going to die.. wouldn't it be eaiser to face your fate knowing i was watching it all, permitting it all, and occasionally scourging a little too for good measure?

God again, inspiring serotonin_wraith to give you this message. What do you mean, you don't believe that? You're telling me you believe I inspired some men from the desert 3500 years ago to write my book, but you don't believe it's happening now? What kind of thinking is that? Don't make me angry! Jesus!
Speaking of Jesus, I'm sorry for the hold up in sending him back. We got caught up in a game of chess, and since we're both perfect, neither of us could lose. It's at a stalemate. But that time has given me the chance to think things over. It turns out writing that book was a mistake. Instead of bringing people together, it only drove people further and further apart due to disagreements over how it should be interpreted! I should have seen it coming, shouldn't I?
I've learnt some things from you lot too. I honestly thought witches existed. The smell of their burning bodies pleased me, but as soon as they stood in front of me ready for judgement, I looked into their souls and discovered they were all just innocent people! I wish I could have ammended that mistake in the second printing of the Bible, but I would have looked less than perfect if I'd gone back on my Word, so I left it.
What else? Ah yes. The whole sin thing. You smart Christians have accepted evolution, but you haven't really thought through what that does to the idea of sin and a fallen world. If there was pain and suffering, animals eating animals, human evolution over a longer time period than 6000 years, well it just shows I designed a planet with natural disasters and a process that kills of 99% of my creatures, and that it's not man's fault! Come on now! Why would I send Jesus back?
I'm sure you get you a warm fuzzy feeling when you think I'm up here somewhere, but it's not like I do much. My miraculous healing interventions only seem to match what modern medicine can do, haven't you noticed that? I didn't cure people of appendicitus, but when science finds a way to help people survive that, you suddenly think I've had a hand in it? Get real! I'm the one who gave it to humans before they'd even sinned!
Honestly guys, you'd be better off without me. That bionic eye is pretty cool, still needs some work to get to my standard of healing blindness, but it shows you can look after yourself. Jesus isn't coming back now I've decided, so carry on under that assumption and you'll be helping the human race.
God.
P.S. Don't pick on SW for this post. I've told you, the holy sprit directed him to type it. If you have a problem, bring it to me.

Savior Complex
by joelbear69 ini came down with a savior complex in my late teens and i still have yet to shake it completely.
the idea that somehow i am supposed to figure out what is wrong with the world and try to help fix it can be overwhelming at times, especially for someone like me that suffers from ocd.
i have found that they only effective way for me to handle this is to try and make things better in my small corner of the world.

I see it as being good and bad.
If everyone did their small part in making the world a better place, things would improve. No one person can change the world, it takes many.
But, taking on too much can be stressful, and seeing others in the world doing the opposite to what you want can be aggrevating. People may have different ideas on how to help- some think if everyone went to church life would be better for all of us, others think abandoning religion would be better. Good intentions can clash.
