Ugh..I know what they're trying to do to me here. The PO is more or less trying to fast-track me to elder status. I get new Privileges TM every four months or so. The standard now is not "head and shoulders" above everyone else--the standard is now, anyone who hasn't screwed up too bad, and consistency. You don't have to be a star, just consistent.

baby elders
by SB ini'm curious ~ has anyone noticed how young elders are these days?
in my old congregation, 6 of our 8 elders were under the age of 30, one of them 23, unmarried.
the father being the p.o...ironically.

by gordon d inmy uncle ( a very sweet man) is practically confined to a wheelchair... in recent years he has developed a renued emphasis on all things jdubery.
because of his poor health, he has a phone ministry from his home in the texas panhandle.

What are your favourite free computer apps? Media Players, Office ...
by kwintestal ini just got a new computer and am setting it up and wondering what suggestions/reviews anyone can give for computer applications other then the traditional microsoft ones that come with the computer.
i have a ton more ram now (going from 256 to 2gb) and can do a few more things then i could before (like something other then running the os).. has anyone tried the openoffice.org suite?
i'd also like a media player other then windows media player, any suggestions?

Firefox has that memory leak problem, I mean, "feature." I use it anyway. for media players, I use winamp for music, and vlc media player for videos.
As much as I love FF, you've got me there. I need to figure out if FF 2.0 doesn't have a memory leak problem. If it doesn't, then I'll upgrade, but otherwise I will stick with 1.5 Winamp owns. VLC player will play anything. I use BSPlayer because it's got a low memory footprint.

The ways of the sith
by darth frosty ini have been noticing a lot of post lately about people using their standings in or out of the congregation to help other's or to make their family situation easier(auldsoul and drew sagen just as an example).
it got me to thinking about my moniker and what it represents.
the sith move in secrecy and darkness.

Just like Sirnose recently did with his part we can encourage others to go to school, get a better education and learn to properly question authority and think for themselves.
Thanks for the shoutout. The BoE keep giving me knew privileges, so I suppose I get new avenues to slip in the "not-quite-Society-approved" message.
For example, I had Bible highlights last Thursday. I actually got some ideas on how to proceed from the commentary from blueletterbible.org. I think I will continue to do this. They will get insights from people who aim higher than being a window-washer or full-time propaganda distributors...
If being covert is what you want, that's what you'll get from me. I've got no choice until I can move out.

Witness mother's and jealousy towards their daughters...
by kittyeatzjdubs inladies, growing up, did you ever feel that your mother resented or was jealous of you?
whenever i would get a compliment from someone, especially males, she would always find someway to turn right around and insult me in front of everyone.
we were at dinner one time with the co and he told me that i was a very beautiful young lady.

I did wonder whether its because she has always had her 'style' restricted by the Org. When I stopped going to meetings, I started wearing clothes I wanted to wear, not what I was told I should wear. So on went the tight tops, short skirts, I dyed my hair blonde, had a couple of tattoos, had a boob job (shock horror). Maybe she's repressed and resents the fact I now do as I please appearance-wise.
You musn't tease us now. We'd like to see a before-and-after comparison.

I thought the end was supposed to come in 2034.
Oh well. By 2036 I'll be 51. I suppose I should gather my post-apocalyptic Mad Max gear now, huh?

This is so huge.
by La Capra inwhen i was four, i believed that my life could be painfully and tortuously taken from me, in a ball of flame, crashing down from the heavens, just while i sitting down to a bowl of oatmeal in the morning.. when i was nine, i believed that my life, as i then knew it, would be drastically altered, that i would be tortured for being a jw, and after suffering for who knows how long, i would die (because i still hadn't lived up to jehovah's expectations).. when i was 13, i wanted to be a nuclear physicist-because it sounded cool, but in the meantime i believed that i would die in armageddon because i wanted to go to college, get really educated, and have a great, "worldly" life.. when i was 15, i felt guilty that i hoped armageddon would never come, because i so desperately wanted to go to college.. when i was 17, i was offered an honors early admissions in a prestigious program in a highly regarded engineering program.
my mother flat out said, "no!".
when i was 18, i scuttled semi-secretly to the local university, part-time, trying to hide my daily activities without actually lying to anyone.. when i was 19 i quit pretending and disassociated.

That's awesome, Capra! Now if you could score some hits on the Tower...that would be a beautiful thing. Much praise to you.

The Governing Body said it ... are you ready !!!!!!!!!!!!
by run dont walk ini was at a funeral this weekend, the first time i'd been in a kingdom hall in 13 years, the talk was short about a half hour, and all jw stuff as expected, but the one part of the talk made me laugh, the speaker said :.
"we (a group of elders), had the oppourtunity to speak with a member of the governing body at the assembly, and he said : "we the governing body are confident that armageddon is close, and are ready for jehovah's day, are you ready ???"".
i couldn't believe my ears, they will never learn.

I'm all about getting funky, but not funky to the olfactories.
This is a stinky situation because you can't say straight out, "Your kid is funkified." You're gonna have to slip this in some sort of conversation with Gilbert's dad. When I had sex ed in the 6th grade, we got sample bars of deoderant. You could casually mention that in conversation. Or, you could talk about a time when your own son got so funky, and you made him take a shower. "Did that ever happen with Gilbert?" you could ask. The point is to talk about personal cleanliness and ask how they deal with it in Gilbert, but not accuse them of being bad parents.
This might take some time, or you may have to do it late in the conversation...

I bet Bush slept with his wife and went to Crawford to clear a double-helping of brush just to feel manly again, after wearing that get-up.
