It is a bit mature for the kids, you're right, possible-san. But it is a clinical description of what happened. Perhaps it would have been best to proceed the article with "WARNING: This article contains frank description of strip-searching. This may not be suitable for all ages."

Unrest in the Governing Body
by JWFreak inone of the many questions that i am asked is what are the current gb members like, who are the hardliners and who are more moderate.. because of my previous job, at a european bethel, i had dealings with most of them with the exception of sam herd.. these are my observations of my conversations with them and how others who had dealings with them.. other ex bethelites may have contrary views to mine, but i would be surprised.. i had spent a lot of time with splane, lett and morris.
hardliners.
david splane, without doubt the one who commands the most respect and attention.

I enjoyed reading that. I grew up in San Diego and went to many conventions at that stadium, which was called Jack Murphy stadium then, (I think - lots of years have passed). We used to go help clean the place, rather clever of the wtbts to save money on rent by using volunteer labor, eh? As it happens, it was more fun than attending the convention, which says something about how pathetic a JW's life is.
It was boring, boring, boring and hot. Sunburns galore.
It is--and always will be--The Murph to me! And yes, I agree, the cleaning was more fun. We were never priviledged enough to get the gum scraping job. It was always sweeping, in fact, the same section year after year.
It's such a relief to have not attended the convention for two years in a row, now! High five!!!

Questions from the Essay "Self-Identity and Growing Up in the Jehovah's Witnesses
by Reopened Mind inthe essay "self-identity and growing up in the jehovah's witnesses" by marcela sherwin was an interesting commentary on how being brought up as one of jehovah's witnesses affects one as an adult after they leave the cult.
only a small sample of ten adult xjws participated in the survey.
i thought it would be interesting to read the answers all of you would give to the same questions.

SirNose586;
You were allowed to be part of a chamber orchestra? Was that in the day when there was still live music at the conventions? My father-in-law was a professional musician before he became a Witness and played bass in the orchestra.
It was the chamber orchestra in my performing arts school that I attended from 5th-12th grade. That's cool that your FIL was a professional musician! I'd had dreams about doing that sort of thing, but by the time I entered high school, it was pretty clear to me that I could not do that as a JW.

1. Were you allowed to make choices for yourself when you were a teenager? If so were your choices restricted to those approved by the WT?
Pretty much, I think most choices for fun or cool things had to be parentally-approved (and therefore WT approved).
2. As a child did you fit in with the in-group at the Kingdom Hall?
I didn't fit in entirely with the "in-group." We were cool, but it seemed I was always just one or two steps away from really being considered cool.
3. Were you part of a school team, yearbook, multi-cultural club or other extracurricular activities?
Yes, I was part of the chamber orchestra.
4. Have you struggled with adjusting to the social norms and values of society after departing from the WT in your adult life?
Yes, I do struggle from time to time with feeling entirely normal.
5. Have you struggled with making friends in your adult life?
I seem to be making friends just as well as I did before, so no, I don't struggle with that.
6. Have you attended counseling after departing from the WT?
No, but I think I should.
7. What effect has your Witness upbringing had on you, positive, negative, or a combination?
It's a combination; there were some positive habits I picked up from the JWs, but I feel like my experience was largely negative.

I disagree.
And btw, it should be "British music is better than American and Canadian music." Just sayin'.

How the WTBTS creates atheists

Inconsistency did it for me, along with the skepticism that leaving the org creates, as others mentioned. The Bible is filled with plenty of scenes of god kicking ass all over the place. So....do I get to see that? Even a little something divine?
Nope. Never felt anything like that, never experienced anything that I couldn't explain by normal means.
I don't think any named deity from a religion exists. Could a god or god-like thing be out there? I don't know. I am skeptical of there being something like that out there.
If some god or godlike thing shows up, kicks ass, and demands worship, I'll do what it asks.
