  CAN YOU ANSWER THIS QUESTION?

  a semi-famous math professional poses this question in a book i'm reading.. i find the answer to be counter-intuitive, but, entertaining.. here is the question:.

  you buy a sack of spuds that weighs 100lbs and are told it is 99% water.. you leave the sack outside in the sun for a couple of days before bringing it inside to store.. you find the spuds are now only 98% water.. how much does the sack of spuds weigh?

  (this is not a trick question.

  The sack of potatoes now weighs 50 lbs.
  Originally, the 100 lb sack had 99 lbs (99%) water and 1 lb. potato. Potato does not evaporate, so the bag still contains 1 lb of potato. Therefore the 100 lb sack is now made up of 98% water and 2% potato. One pound is 2% of 50 lbs, therefore the bag now weighs 50 lbs.

  Knocking My Impresssions

  i just watched the knocking dvd and it is a very good documentary about jw's.

  two families are followed by the producer.

  one is 23 year old seth that is dying from liver failure and requires a transplant.

  I find it interesting that they would showcase a &bloodless transplant" without mentioning that just a few years earlier organ transplants were a disfellowshipping offense in their own right. Was that mentioned?

  Jw teaching on poison ?

  continuing on from the "not what christians do " thread.... does anyone know the jw teaching on drinking 'a drop of poison' from some other religion ?.

  yet it is said....... if they drink any deadly thing, it will not hurt them.

  Is it true that there is good in all religions?
  Most religions do teach that a person should not lie or steal, and so forth. But is that sufficient? Would you be happy to drink a glass of poisoned water because someone assured you that most of what you were getting was water?

  Do you recover? I don't know. But I figure I learned some good stuff, like what NOT to do. I did realize at some point that I needed to give the heavy heart and anger to God and let it go. He did lift it from my heart and let me tell you, I felt 100 pounds lighter at that moment!!! He sees and maybe he can use us to reach out to those still stuck inside. Otherwise, just pray and carry on and God will reach you in whichever way is right for you.

  I'm not sure what all happened - just a few unconfirmed things that were rumored. I was in my early teens at the time and we moved away just before the outing. Carmel - PM me!! I was quite a bit later than that (teens in the 80s). It was a nice place.

  if a jw has absolutely no "worldly" contacts, works for himself and has only witnesses working for him-----stay away from them!

  if someone has been "homeschooled" from infancy----stay away!.

  jws who know nothing but being a jw are the worst types!

  Hey.... I was a raised in, homeschooled JW with no life. Why don't you like me, Minimus? I am crushed - you don't even know me. :-) Honestly, tho.... Oh, and I had my own business and we employed only JWs too. And I will have you know that I do not fit your criteria of being a backstabber or gossip.

  i remember only funny incidents, like one brother getting up there with his zipper down.

  (i knew alot of brothers after that felt no shame to actually check down there before going up on the podium!

  WT Approved Grounds For Divorce

  i was hoping to confirm something for an article i'm working on.

  i was told that the only acceptable grounds for divorce are adultery and a husband failing to support his wife financially.

  i don't believe apostasy counts, does it?

  In such a situation, Jesus’ words on the subject have to be taken into account: “I say to you that whoever divorces his wife, except on the ground of fornication, and marries another commits adultery.” (Matthew 19:9) What does this mean? That fornication (which in the Bible sense includes adultery and gross sexual immorality such as homosexuality) can break up a marriage. Scripturally, the innocent partner has the right to divorce the guilty one and remarry without sin in God’s eyes.
  Why was this so traumatizing? My girlfriend ran away from home as a young teen because her father was coming home from jail, where he had been sent for incest / molesting her brother. The elders told her mother that she had to remain married and should accept him back into the home, as he had not been guilty of anything to break the marriage ties. Nice, huh?
