I have never feared death, even now that I am closer to it. I have enjoyed my time on earth, have loved and been loved. I hope I am remembered well by those I leave, and that I made the world a bit better in some way. What more can you expect, really? If there is such a thing as an afterlife, well I guess that would be a pleasant surprise (unless its hell, but I have a hard time believing in even the possibility of that)

Death
by punkofnice inwhen i was a dub i was petrified of displeasing the trademark imaginary god that the wbt$ had invented.
i feared that kind of death.. the thought of being unconscious totally forevermore seems so weird.. now that i know the wbt$ was lying (as usual), and i realise there can't possibly be a god as described in religion i am now faced with the reality that i'll be dead and gone with nothing to carry me on after in a conscious way.
just because i don't want this to happen doesn't mean it won't.. oh, darn!

Do Nigerians really have bad reputation?
by His Excellency inon a recent thread here about an announcement made by the cobe, with the aim of extorting 10 grand from the servant body, different allegations were made that the request sound nigerian?..
.
my question is, do nigerians really have bad reputation?.

Its called a Nigerian scam, but they may or may not actually be in Nigeria, but will often say they are. 60% originate in the US (go figure). The person claims to have a great deal of money they want to get out of the country and will let the individual keep 30% of the millions of dollars, they just need a bank account number. A variation is the advance fee. The scammer sends a cashiers check which is to be deposted, the mark is supposed to send part of the amount to the scammer. Many preople wait until the check "clears", then think they are safe to send cash to the scammer. The problem is the checks are fake. While the bank may put money into your account, it may actually take weeks or months for the check to bounce, and the bank will want the money back. I dont know how anyone falls for these two scams, but it still works. Do not cash checks for anyone or give your account number to anyone. Cashiers checks are worthless these days.

if they were able to win on this ground, they could get out completely (although it could still be appealed to the ca supreme court).

CHASEROUS :An exception to the usual rule that there is no duty to prevent others from causing harm is when something called a “special relationship” exists. Rick Simons argued, and the trial judge agreed, that a special relationship did exist between both the congregation and the WT Society and Candace Conti. It is very important that the appeals court agree as well that a special relationship existed in order for Candace to win this appeal. There are a lot of cases in the brief cited about when special relationships do and do not exist. The WT cites some cases to the effect that the Catholic Church does not have a special relationship with its parishioners. This will probably be the most important parts of the entire appeal for Candace's legal team to reply to. I am looking forward to seeing their arguments. I imagine that one argument could be that the WT organziation is different from the Catholic Church, and another might be that maybe it is time to recognize such a special relationship since times have changed since those last cases were decided involving the Catholic Church (10-15 years ago)
Nice summary, I feel that I understand this much better. I think that the Watchtower is going to have a hard time proving that no special relationship existed between them, the congregation and Candace. There is a mountain of evidence in the publications where the Watchtower claims such a relationship. They consider themselves appointed by God to direct the congregations, they consider the elders appointed and directed by God's holy spirit, they require the elders to obey them in every thing, even very minor things, And they require the individual congregation members to follow them and the obey the elders in everything, in fact they can be disfellowshipped if they do not do so. The elders made the decision they did (removing kendrick but keeping it quiet) because they were following Watchtower instructions.
Since congregation members are told the GB are appointed by God, and elders are appointed by and directed by holy spirit, they would have an expectation that the elders would protect the congregation from child molesters. In fact they often claim that such a thing is very rare in their congregations, almost unheard of. This false sense of security, based on the teachings of the Watchtower were no doubt one of the reasons Kendrick was able to spend time with Candace without her parents being suspicious.

I feel kind of sorry for Sparky. He is still under the delusion that this organization cares about the individual JWs, when all evidence shows they don't care. Hopefully he will figure it out someday.

"I'll see you at the movies." RIP Roger Ebert
by MrFreeze inyears ago, i didn't care for roger ebert.
i thought he was kind of a snooty film critic.. after watching films as sort of a hobby, i came to really appreciate his opinions on film.
mainly, what was the film trying to do.
-
LisaRose
That is what a great critic does - whether he liked the movie or not, you got a pretty good idea if you might like it or not. I was also inspired by him because he continued to work even though he lost so much to cancer.

LURKING JW: Thinking of leaving? Learn from my experience.
by SnakesInTheTower in"mental wondering in the wilderness"... uh oh.... it's a long post from snakes.... lol.
yep... i think that is the best way to describe where i am at in life right now.
if you have read my past posts (mostly in the private section) you know some of my history as a life-long (now former) witness.. i have been away from the jw religion, for all intents and purposes, since dec. 06, though it was not until sept 07 that i stopped attending meetings.

How long does it take to get reinstated ?
by Pitchess Co-Gen ini was think about getting reinstated, and then do a fade right after because of family ties..
-
LisaRose
I was reinstated after only two months. It was stupid, I was young and unhappily married and had a brief affair. They could have just counseled me, I was just confused and immature, but I guess I wasn't repentant enough. Getting disfellowshipped was a shock and very difficult. I decided to try and get back so I never stopped going to meetings. I had to stay in my bad marriage, but it was just to hard being shunned. It seems this is rare, it's six months now at a minimum.

Witnessing =Dirty Householders/bible studies yuck remember??
by Witness 007 inwe had a bible study women who collected all the qaurter left bottles of coke and would "recycle" them into one bottle.

I went with someone else to their bible study. The study had a dog run just outside, and the windows were open. i could smell dog poop the entire time, the hour seemed to creep by. When we left I took a look, there were weeks worth of dog poop in the small dog run. ughh, how could you do that to a dog? And how could you not smell it?

I have read the original comments from Chaserous and I have to say I don't think what he said was so wrong. I dont agree with him, but the answer did seem a bit....awkward, I guess. He was just making a comment on how a question was answered, he is entitled to his opinion, and commenting on one minor thing in this one interview is completely different from the attacks against Candace that are being made on Topix and other forums. There is a thread on Topix right now from one of the apologists, what he posts is disgusting. If you think what Chaserous said is so bad, go check out that thread. These questions will be asked, and I don't think it helps her cause to denounce someone for having an opinion or asking a question. I think most of us here feel a bit protective of her, because of what she has gone through, but I don't see how attacking someone for having an opinion on one minor point is helpful to her.
