There's one thing you have that they won't, the ability to not take their beliefs too seriously.
Amen brother!!!
well it took them four years to find me at my current address, but they did it.
my bell rang today and guess who it was!
i had some time and thought to myself, sure why not.

I think the way they found an out is by saying you believed in the Trinity now and you had to defend it. I think turning it the other way to have to defend something they really can't defend would be better in making them squirm for instance?
Thanks for the thoughts Tuesday, that's exactly what I was trying to do, make them squirm! That's why I was careful with my question. I never said that I believed in the Trinity, but instead I kept asking them, "What does the Bible say?" I keep several versions of the Bible (KJV, American Standard, Revised Standard) around, for an emergency like this one! Since they couldn't answer my question, they left.
hmmm, I was wondering if they may be back to my house again, this time with an elder???!!!

So what's the answer to the question? I just read the verse John 1:1 in the NIV Bible and it reads the same way (or am I missing something?)...
"In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God."
That's just it! I was trying to make them think, something every JW is taught not to do. All reputable translations of the Bible show John 1:1 as: "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God."
But the New World Translation, the JW Bible, reads, ""In the beginning the Word was, and the Word was with God, and the Word was a God."
JWs believe that God or Jehovah and Jesus are TWO separate beings. But that is not what the Bible says. The Bible shows that God and Jesus are one and the same. So in an attempt to discredit the divinity of Jesus Christ, the WTS altered their version of the Bible to fit their theology. John 1:1 has always caused a problem for them. So, in order to make Jesus less than God, they altered this verse. But they forgot about the other scriptures, such as Ephesians, which say there is only one God.

It is always good to give them something to think about, though. Maybe they will remember your conversation when this scripture comes up again.
I hope they do think about it. I wish someone had done that for me when I was a witness. I may have left "The Org." sooner!

Well it took them four years to find me at my current address, but they did it. My bell rang today and guess who it was! I had some time and thought to myself, sure why not. First off, I currently consider myself to be an agnostic. At this point in my life I have no desire to join any religious group, especially not the JWs again! I dont dislike the "average witnesses", I actually feel sorry for them. My problem is with the leaders at the top in NY. They are the ones that are misleading millions and keeping them enslaved in a cult!
So anyway, after their brief, "Hi, we're Jehovah's Witnesses" intro, the two witnesses began to offer me their latest Watchtower & Awake. That's when I put on the brakes. After telling them that my mother is a witness and I had been brought up as one, I saw the smiles on their faces. Their next question, of course, was "why did you leave?" I dont think they were prepared for my answer or my question. So I said, "Primarily, because the elders at my congregation gave me a hard time about attending college. Now, I have a question for you both." I gave them two scriptures from the New Testament. The first was Ephesians 4: 4 - 6 and John 1:1. I said, "Now the Bible here in Ephesians says that we should only have 'ONE faith, ONE baptism and ONE God. However, your version of the Bible has altered John 1:1 to say that the Word 'IS A GOD'. Now if you dont believe in the Trinity, that means that your religion is teaching that Jehovah is ONE God and Jesus is ANOTHER God, right?"
They both were silent for a moment. Then one of the witnesses said, "So you believe in the Trinity now?" And I said, "Well, what does the Bible say? Specifically here in the two scriptures that I just gave you." So the other witness said, "Well, there is only ONE God and that is Jehovah God, the creator of the Earth and all things." I said, "Ok, so why does your version of the Bible say that the Word, who of course is Jesus, is also A God?" Of course neither witness could answer my question, so they just continued to say that there is only one God. They then tried to change the subject to the coming of Armageddon. After about 10 minutes, I guess they figured that they werent gonna get anywhere with me, so they left. I never got an answer to my question either!!!
Anyone else ever have an experience like this? Where the witnesses just couldnt answer a question that you had? And they just tried to keep changing the subject?
i've just been thinking about jwd and how messed it up it is how the witnesses twisted things in my mind so i totally got mind-warped....what am i talking about, you ask?
well, whenever someone has a quote on here from watchtower literature from years past (like from the 1970s or 1960s etc) proving that witnesses have taught/do teach this or that in the past, i automatically discredit that quote necause how i was taught as a witness was that whole new light thing-meaning...... "oh, well, things have changed-our teachings have changed, we no longer believe or teach this, this, and that anymore,"- i'm so brainwashed that when i read old quotes on here where people prove to say that witnesses taught this or that, it's like i kind of go "oh well that quote doesnt' matter," but in reality.......... jws should take responsibility for everything they've taught!!!
and not just keep saying, "well, that was then-this is now.. ...i mean, from an outsider's view point, they would say "oh, so witnesses teach this?
Yes, I also agree with what you are saying. What amazes me about the "new light" nonsense is how "The Org." has totally altered many previous beliefs. Many current JW's would be shocked or in total disbelief if they knew certain things about the past.
How about the long forgotten teachings of C.T.Russell? And what about the cross that is on C.T.Russell's gravesite? Or the fact that Judge Rutherford gave out Christmas presents at a "society" meeting? And speaking of the cross, how many know that a cross used to appear at the top of the Watchtower magazine?
Just a few examples of what that "new light" has done.
i started making a list of what we really know about jehovah from the bible.
see if you can add to the list.. 1. likes to take afternoon walks, especially when it's breezy.. 2. likes the smell of roasting animals.. 3. likes dancing and singing but doesn't necessarily dance and sing himself.. 4. can write a little bit, though only with one finger.
usually gets humans to write for him instead.. 5. seems to like cheap magic tricks, like talking donkeys and magic burning bushes.. 6. always resorts to violence to solve problems instead of dialogue or diplomacy.. 7. he can reproduce asexually.. 8. he likes to be called father and he has sons, but his "wife" is a group of sexless spirits, who are also his sons.. any more??.
Seems that he has a split personality too:
Old Testament: Unforgiving & mean
New Testament: Kind & loving
what tv shows didn't you get to watch when you were a jw?
either because you had to attend one of the five meetings a week or had to go out in field service on the weekend?.
i remember being pissed off as a kid every saturday morning, because we always had to go out in field service.
Good luck finding those Six Million Dollar Man and Bionic Woman episodes Junction!
Oh and another show I could never watch was "Charlie's Angels". Besides the violence, I couldnt watch them because my mother said that the main characters "jiggled" too much!!! LOL
it may have been done before, if it has it's being done again.. what worldly music did you listen to?
i'm talking about the singer/band that made the elders blood boil and got you whispers and stares at the kingdom hall.. i was an eighties child so for me it was madonna!
the lacy tops and bras, crucifixes, slutty makeup and openess towards sex was the perfect outlet for me.
hey Brinjen, I didn't realize you were so "new"! LOL
Welcome to the board!!!
My rebel music was mainly from the late 70s, early 80s. But I remember being extremely pissed off when the elders said that the group QUEEN was demonic! Supposedly if you play "Another One Bites the Dust" backwards youll hear, "I love to smoke maraijuana." As crazy as it sounds I actually tried playing the 33 1/3 (anybody still remember them?? lol) backwards, to prove to my mother that it wasnt true.
She still made me throw my Queen album away!!!
TCK
