A potsherd with writing from the time of King David--How 'bout that?
by not a captive inwriting on a potsherd found over a year ago in qeiyafa near the elah valley has been deciphered by professor gershon galil of the university of haifa.
it is said to be the oldest known extant inscription in the hebrew language.
the potsherd was radiocarbon dated to c. 1000 bc which is around the time of king david.

This is relevant to the discussion of old bible history--and how much we should disparage one another over its contents.

Jesus didn't care about chronologies and bible knowledge--why should we?
by humbled inwhen i read the gospels, i don't find a bunch of numbers.
i loved that jesus talked in a way that left me wide open to respond to god.
"love god with your whole heart, mind, soul and strength and your neighbor as yourself".

You're spot on on those luni-solar years with the intercalary additions, Lars. You keep us on our toes. Still can't be onboard w/ your chronologies .

Do you think Jesus WANTED to be turned into a religion?
by humbled instuff that has happened to me and people of other religions that i've met and read about--it makes me wonder if the caretakers of "holy writings" haven't bent us with their theology and pedantry.. i don't think jesus wanted us to make a religion.. he offered an experience of faith that was first and foremost an invitation.
the gospels--even if half diluted with error can't dispel the experiences we feel if we accept these words at face value: john 7:17-18.. i can't stay on- going to doctors today.. thanks.

Jesus' words dignified the poor. He didn't rob them. The stories say he healed people and treated women well.
Paul may have laid the groundwork for organized religion without intending it.
It is a stretch to equate Jesus with L. Ron Hubbard, Snarl & Racket (Couldn't resist!)
I can't get too bent about mispronounced names. My folks called me MAY-va for 21 years. I lived in Ireland at that time , and knowing my name was Irish, came to find out it had been mispronunced all along. It is said there- MAYV.
I like your new Avatar, Snarl, and I won't misprint your name after this, even though I'm feeling naughty.

So if the flood didn't actually happen the way the Hebrews told it.
So Jesus who used the story when he was talking to descendents of those Hebrews--(if you can believe any thing that was written in the Bible)
So what.
Have you ever seen what those old old proto-phoenician/canaanite texts were like? hopefully spoken language was clearer for them than this crazy looking stuff. No capital letters, no puncuation, no certain way to trace a subject antecedent---When I got in trouble and left, I took to one of the interviews a big photocopy of writing on a potsherd from the era of the king David. "How can anyone create THEOLOGY from the vast empty spaces between these crude marks?"
Have you ever heard a tale of an amazing or fearful family event told within the family--in epic style? I have. The tale is true essentially--but omg someone later on the outside hearing it--- they jeer when you retell it. There is confusion.
The WTS waylaid us. That's fair to say. But now we don't have to ridicule ancient attempts to communicate amazing events just because the WTS told us cock-and-bull stories.
Maybe there is a Being who has been waiting for humans to have and a more informed understanding of the world. And he was generous enough to send Jesus when writing was improved but social ideas and science had a ways to go. I think Jesus still needs a hearing.
So what if the flood didn't happen.

An old friend
by pontoon in40+ yrs ago when i moved into this congregation's territory i became good friends with a brother in the congregation, about 20 yrs older than me and about mildest, most easy going person you could meet.
he was just full of old fashion country style common sense, taught me a lot about country life, like heating with firewood, (yes, there is a lot to know about cutting and heating with wood), taught me how to skin and cut up deer, he would help anyone who needed help........., so about 30 yrs ago he was df'd.
we would occasionally bump into each other, i would never not say hello, but him knowing i wasn't suppose to talk to him he would (and i) just move on.

Tater,
Soontobe answered before I did.
Noted in the Diaglott and noted in wikipedia under Herod Archelaus is bloody history that Jesus referred to in the parable.
Wiki notes Luke 19 at the bottom of their article.
I have to turn in for now. But I hope to get a better go at this post.
