don't know where you live, but there are probably poor people all around you. I admire Habitat for Humanity, for instance, and they go lots of places and work hard helping others. I wonder if heading off to another country without understanding all the issues could actually be dangerous? Or at the very least, not very helpful. I used to donate to Mother Teresa's charity in Tijuana - one of the things they told me down there was that it was important to donate things that were necessary like milk for kids, but not stuff that could just be sold and used to buy alcohol or drugs. I would never have thought of that. Or, maybe you could volunteer for the Red Cross, which sends people to all sorts of disaster areas. We have a friend, for instance, who was sent down to New Orleans after hurricane Katrina. Or maybe you would like to become a paramedic or fireman or police officer if you are looking for adventure. Those are my ideas off the top of my head. Wish I was young again and ready for adventure - so many interesting things you have in front of you!

Has anyone ever adopted a village or driven a truck of supplies overseas?
by Qcmbr inmy friend and i are mulling over the idea of doing something like this and yet we are so naive and know so little about the practicalities of such an exercise that we don't even know if we have the capacity to do this.
has anyone ever done anything like this and would share what was involved?
if its too scary i'll just donate toys to the hospital..

Gimme your Best Shot.
by Frannie Banannie ini've been re-thinking about what to say when jw's come knockin'.
i've thought about what the scriptures say about jesus' words to the pharisees and think perhaps i might say, "i don't have any interest in the doctrines and writings of the scribes and pharisees of the wts.".
or maybe i could just say, "yall're just wts nazis and you look down on everyone else as if they were jews during wwii, so i'd prefer not to converse with you.".

Why waste your breath? I just say, I know you keep a do not call list. Please put me on that list and never call at this house again. Then I say, have a nice day, and gently close the door. I've only had to do it a couple of times in 15 years, even though I know the JWs are very active in our town.

I wonder if any of you have favorite websites you would share? not Jw sites, just anything fun and interesting that you like. For instance I really like http://news.bbc.co.uk/ and look at it just about every day for news. I'm in the US but the BBC news really does a good job of covering all sorts of news, including the US.
Also I really like www.mycathatesyou.com mostly for the photos - some of the captions are too hostile for me but I love the photos. And I like Ebay, do some selling and shopping there and enjoy the whole thing. In fact I sell consistently enough to fund my knitting habit - yarn isn't cheap nowadays.
and I love http://www.earthsky.org/ and like to see what the night sky holds and then go out and see if I can find whatever star or constellation they are describing. Wonderful illustrations and photos.
Is there anything else you can suggest? I think the internet is wonderful and I use it all the time for research and for my work and just for fun.

NEW LIGHT ! Wedding Rings!!!!!!!!!
by bigmouth indoes this sound right to you????!!!!!
to all congregations; .

composite sign - is that new JW jargon? I haven't heard that one but have been out for over 20 years
rings are round because that's what will fit around a finger and stay there comfortably. That sort of Jesuitical nitpicking is awesome, isn't it? Can't believe anyone would waste time trying to figure out if rings are pagan because they are round!
I hope it's a real letter - seems so genuine. They might say "whilst" because they are copying out of some other source, or they still have some Victorians writing their text.
I wonder why they are picking on rings? Someone's obsession? have they put that amount of thought into all the other wedding traditions the JWs copy from "worldly" sources?

sitting here relaxing and hanging out with my husband, he is watching Rachel Ray with the sound off (the only way to watch her) and I am checking out this forum and thinking about important things like:
1. why does RR have a television show anyway? have you ever seen the I hate Rachel Ray web page?
2. Looking at my post history and seeing how many topics ended with my post, I wonder if I had the last word or if I just killed the conversation?
3. how many squares of chocolate I can eat and not go over my limit of calories
4. why I ordered a Roy Orbison dvd when I don't have a dvd player
5. whether I should go see the elephant seals at San Simeon this weekend or just veg
6. where to go for my husband's birthday
7. vacation in Mt. Shasta this summer
in other words, I am not doing anything at all and it is great.

to quote a friend of mine "it sounds crazy because it IS crazy." You won't have a lot of success using logic on illogical people - although you might get lucky and talk with someone who wants to be logical and needs someone else to reframe the belief for him/her.

Religion and Insanity
by JWdaughter inrecently i have been reading a book, nearly done now, called "under the banner of heaven".
it is about some fundamental mormons (the ones who practice polygamy andwho are not accepted as lds among regular members of the slc based church.. in this book, while explaining the attempted insanity plea for a fundy lds murderer, they had several psychiatrists (both lds and non lds) explaining insanity.
the argument i thought was interesting was when the defense brought up his very unorthodox beliefs (they sounded nutty to me-and would be considered so by most lds folks also).

"They pointed out that believing in the virgin birth, transubstantiation, trinity, resurrection, god speaking to prophets, heaven . . .all the rest of the religious beliefs we can think of-are insane. If you believe it alone you are a crazy person. A GROUP of crazy people is a religious (or otherwise) movement."
I am so glad you shared that - it is so clear and succinct. I also, once free of the JW mindset, realized I had a problem with all religions, not just that one. That just happens to be the one I was involved with. But they are all crazy, especially religions that try to make modern people follow a mindset and rules that were created thousands and thousands of years ago by people who had an entirely different experience of life and different societal and survival needs.

Stuck in a dead-end job because of obeying anti-higher education policy?
by nvrgnbk indid you refrain from obtaining a degree or advanced studies when you had the chance because it wasn't the witness thing to do?
how has this affected your life?
comments, rants, and personal experiences please.

yeah, I get what you mean. One of the things I got out of going to an admittedly bizarre vocational school was a social life, something that hardly exists in the org., and exposure to a wide variety of new and different ideas that challenged my beliefs. I got to roam all over the universe of thought, something I suppose that you usually get when you are young and going off to college and meeting new and different people. I just had to wait 20 years!

So how do you keep your clothes hangers tidy?
by ozziepost inok, fluffy time!.
mrs ozzie and i are just back home and so there's plenty of laundry to do - that's my job, and i quite enjoy it, but there's one thing that spoils it for me and that's the clothes hangars!.
you know how it goes, some hangars for pants, some for skirts, some for shirts, and then some are plastic, some are steel and some are those confounded wire hangars you get from the dry cleaners.. they're always getting tangled up; it doesn't matter how well i stack them (i've got a basket for them), when i get out in the yard to hang out the clothes, there's always one, it only takes one!

1. only have enough clothes for ten days - you take up less room in the closet and need fewer hangers. 2. only have as many hangers as you have clothes. 3. take the shirt off the hanger, put the hanger back on the rod right away. 4. take the pile of laundry to the closet, pull out a hanger, hang something on it, put it away. 5. ruthlessly throw out stray hangers - they fornicate and reproduce when you aren't looking. 6. any time you buy new clothes, throw out the old ones, to keep the hanger count the same.
