DNA memory
by poopsiecakes inhas anyone here ever researched or thought about dna memory?
there's a lot of weird, esoteric stuff out there concerning this, like you can somehow access your ancestors' memories.
that's not really what i'm talking about - to me, that sounds a little too fanciful.dna is a relatively recent discovery and obviously, there's still a lot to learn.

I've often wondered what mechanism explains instinct, which is a kind of genetic memory, in animals, including humans. -

I love my Samsung Galaxy 3 tablet, my Dewalt saber saw, and my Black and Decker cordless screw gun...all items that have seriously out-performed my expectations...and my expectations are usually pretty high for stuff I buy. :) -

YOU 'THINK' YOU ARE FREE when you leave the Org. . . but it can be an ILLUSION
by Terry indid you know there is nothing more insane than being partly indoctrinated and partly free?.
the level of cognitive dissonance is ridiculous!.
i have told this story before, so i'll shorten it to cut to the chase.. in 1987, i was dating a professional psychotherapist with a view to marriage.

When at last you recognise Watchtower Truth as fiction you are really only at a crossroads, though you might not fully appreciate it. You've only cut through a small portion of the religious bullshit that clutters your brain. The residual debilitating debris of faith remains. Terry's faux pas a wonderful example of it insidiously working its way into your reality. I broke free in 1976 while still a bible student but continued to pray to Jehovah for almost three decades. I know about cognitive dissonance. I experienced it for a long time. The realisation that Yahweh is a fiction set me free to create a different, more satisfying fiction in which to live.
We're all living our own personal fictions, what we tell ourselves to believe.
So true...if I may share a personal history: I was at a crossroads when I started studying the Bible with a young Witness couple back in 1998. I remember feeling at the time that I was on the verge of becoming an athiest or at least full-fledged agnostic. There was so much hypocrisy happening at each of the churches I had attended in the past. But I thought I'd give religion one more shot, and the bible study was beginning to make so much sense.... I became a baptized witness eventuallly, but that only lasted about 5 years when I saw the same pattern of hypocrisy and double-standards, and I left.
In the past, I've found myself in situations where the subject of the bible came up, and I was spouting off highly detailed "knowledge" of bible trivia, and not realizing what impression I was leaving my listeners. Now I preface any bible "knowledge" I'm about to impart with a forewarning that I used to be a Witness, etc. I mostly keep that kind of stuff to myself now.
As a way of coping, I guess, I classify all that knowledge as being no different than my knowledge of other fantasy worlds such as Star Wars, Star Trek, Tolkien's Middle-Earth. I happen to be a huge fan those three fantasy worlds, so why not add the Bible world to that?

Did you AWAKEN from the JWs by yourself?
by cultBgone ini was thinking about how so many posters here on jwn are frustrated and frantic to help their loved ones get away from the brainwashing of jws, and how much advice is given about how to help family members and loved ones.
i considered my own leaving and that it was internal turmoil based on the teachings getting weirder and child abuse issues, to name just a few, and it made me wonder:.
did you self-awaken or were you assisted by the gentle proddings of a friend or family member?

baptized in 2000...stopped going to meetings around 2005ish...the NGO "scandal" was the tipping point for me. but mostly I got tired of the hypocrisy and bullying of one of our prominent elders. so it was mostly a self-awakening.

What I Learned from Bro Lett's DC Talk
by Rohag inwhat i learned/derived from steven lett's dc talk (thanks again, ynot, for providing access to the .mp3 files!).
brother lett - or the committee that produced the talk - really loves food metaphors.well-dressed people, especially children, produce a good witness.if you're an apostate, chances are bad conduct/secret sin/moral depravity made you that way.
apostasy is usually founded on sin and rarely on conviction.the bible is an insufficient - or overly cumbersome - guide to godly conduct.

Sorry, I meant to word my post this way:
If you're an apostate, chances are bad conduct/secret sin/moral depravity made you that way. Apostasy is usually founded on sin and rarely on conviction.
This is totally true! I'm an apostate because of the bad conduct/secret sin/moral depravity of a few witnesses I knew...one was my book study conductor, another was a whole family of witnesses I used to work for, and others were witnesses I associated with. My apostacy was founded on their sin.
That "rarely on conviction" things is a lie, though. I'm an apostate on moral grounds. My conviction is that I do not want to tolerate the hypocrisy of the organization.
Hope that clears things up. I was half asleep when I wrote this post the first time.

Let's help the friends give the #3 talk
by CombattingTheCult ini thought it might be considerate to help the friends who have the #3 talk this week.
the subject is "true prophets did not always understand how and when things foretold would happen".
any modern day applications would be especially beneficial for the audience.

They're basically saying they are right because they speak for god but can make mistakes becaues they are humans.
Erander-that doesn't make sense, does it?
Yes, how did I "buy it" for over thirty years? They speak for God in the WT magazines and books, but aren't held accountable when they must change a teaching and claim "new light" becuse they are merely human. How convenient.
Q - exactly. it doesn't make sense. it is a contradiction. they basically get to break the rules when convenient to them. it isn't supposed to work that way.

I went through and read the source material for this talk. OMG...it's been a while since I last attended a meeting, and I don't know how or why I bought in to this load of hog feces!
They're basically saying they are right because they speak for god but can make mistakes becaues they are humans. That sort of thing wouldn't have flown for the "prophets" of the old testament. Why do they get away with that b.s. today? It's so sad that people actually buy into this garbage and look down on others who can't or won't stomach it.
