"What makes one HAPPY?"
by quietlyleaving inthis topic is being discussed on another forum i've begun attending and i wondered what jwn members think enhances well being and happiness.. a psycholgist who has studied the subject was surprised that money is not at the top of most people's lists - social support including family, friends and such networks occupies the top spot.
(no surprise then that this is the wts' ultimate disciplinary method).. what do you all think?.
what are some other ways of achieving and maintaining well being and happiness?.

Spending time with the people that i love, family and friends brings me the most happiness. And even if its not a daily or even weekly thing, the anticipation of seeing them makes me happy.

Did you know the End started in 1799?
by jwfacts inyes, it sounds crazy doesn't yet.
if a religion went around preaching that today no one would take them seriously, and yet that is what the watchtower used to preach.
"the "time of the end," a period of one hundred and fifteen (115) years, from a.d. 1799 to a.d. 1914, is particularly marked in the scriptures.

I think the significance of year 1914 will become like the significance of the year 33 CE. Meanwhile there are all sorts of imaginative scenarios the GB can play with. Perhaps they'll say that all the praying and witnessing that JWs have been doing has resulted in a sort of repreive as in Jonah's day. Jehovahs forgiveness and love can then be celebrated.
This could have some positive implications for disfellowshipped ones - (GB if you are reading this, get with it)

Martin Goodman in his Rome and Jerusalem: the clash of Ancient Civilizations testifies to the ideosyncratic nature of early christian beliefs and also of Jewish beliefs during the period before and after the historical Jesus.
I think Narkissos is quite right to call those scholars quasi scholars, Slim, they are victims of their own ideology as we are of Jehovahs witnesses. The Jehovahs witness myopic view of the tetragrammaton is closely liked to their strongly monotheistic stance. Martin Goodman says that such singular monotheism only emerged in Jewish thinking with the advent of Islam.

edit: in other words, it seems to me, from what I've understood, that Howard and Trobisch are working backwards instead of letting the texts speak for themselves.
I don't see anything wrong with your style or method of argumentation. Its your sources that are the problem

Very Moving memorial to Michael. First class all the way
by StoneWall inglad i decided to watch it.
i was afraid it would turn out to be a circus and i was very pleasantly surprised at how.
dignified and honorable it turned out.. thanks to the jackson family for allowing many to see all the good things michael will be remembered for as well.

Apolgies
by Joe Grundy ini have just re-read a couple of my postings - no, the apolgy is not for being narcissistic!.
i hope i have made it clear throughout my postings here that while never a jw, i have intense sympathy, empathy and concern for those who have suffered, and continue to suffer, from this bullying and corrupt (imho) quasi-religion.
i hope that on occasion an 'outsider's' view may be helpful.. .

I had a dream about free2think last night!!
by Kudra inin my dream she called me as i was driving to work (to a job that i don't have any more) and i was driving the car from the backseat and was having a hard time seeing the road and talking to her on my cumbersome new cellphone.. she was telling me that i had better hurry up and post on the aposta-tahoe thread about getting a reservation for the campsite because they would fill up and she needs to know what is going on so she can make plans!.
weird!
f2t is not even coming to the aposta-fest this august... wish she could, tho!.

When you were one of Jehovah's Witnesses, did you care about TRUTH?
by The Berean ini only cared about conformity ....
-
free2think
I must have been very preoccupied with truth because it has taken me ages to sort out where I currently stand. Conformity wasn't as big an issue for me - it probably isn't for women
