I have some questions and a link for you:

- What kind of site did you get that information from? What is their main ideology? Don't they look a bit like a watchtower-like religion? What does this say the about the accuracy of their information?

- Does the use of crown&cross really prove a connection to freemasonry? How common was this symbol during the time of Russell?

- Does the pyramid over Russells head and the masonic centre nearby really prove a connection? Who else is buried on these grounds? Didn't Russell have a fascination for the Great Pyramid? How widespread was this fascination during his day?

- Does the flying sun-disc symbol really prove a connection to the occult? Do you know a car brandwith the same symbol? Does that make this car brand occult? Do you know a similair symbol was used by the ancient Persians (ca. 500 BC)? Does that make the ancient Persians occult?

I would like to add one nuance: the information that is overflooding your computer is not all of the same quality. In the information age, people need critical thinking skills more than ever to filter the information and discard the junk.

Unfortunately, this is not the case. The thread before yours about Russell being a mason is a perfect example. I quote from the site it links to:

I'm sure you understand this is bs. But it's wrong to say that this site is lying to us, although there are rebuttals to these claims on the internet. But unfortunately, the writers of this article are under their own sort of ideology.

Now the writers of the watchtower do not have critical thinking skills either (where should they learn that? tms? :) If you're so under the spell of wt ideology it is only natural that you discard the *right* information, and come up with the junk in the magazines, even while believing it yourself. Your information filter is defect, so to speak.

Of course this is not saying they shouldn't do something about it!

the wtbts always has meditation as a topic on conventions.

they always state that eastern meditation makes the mind "blank", so this is a no no.. of course we know that it is actually the convention that makes the mind blank :).

since my mental departure from the organization, i'm still trying to wrap my mind around the entire concept of freedom.

now that i don't have so many restraints as a result of being in the org, such as mental, and time restraints, i can't help but be happy!

there is so much that i want to accomplish in life now and i know that now it's possible.

it was so scary.. i was terrified they would let my babies die.".

Jehovah's Witnesses who choose not to have a blood transfusion have to sign to prove they do not want one and the committee is only there for support.

i have to share this.

last night i had an appointment with a lady.

i was under the impression that it was regarding life insurance, something i will need to get soon, however there were hints that there was some sort of "business opportunity".

Who is Allah?

i found it very interesting to learn on this forum about the origins of yahweh as an ancient tribal deity worshipped by the early settlers in the middle east.

but i know very little about allah, the god of islam.. does anyone know the relationship between allah and yahweh?

do both these deities have an origin in the ancient tribes from the middle east area?.

1. Good point about retroactive mytho-theology. I think we can use this concept not only for the development of monotheistic gods, but also for fictional "historical continuity" of the believing community itself:

- Once Islam was created, Abraham had always been a Muslim. There's even the term hanif for a "pre-islamic muslim" in islamic theology.

- Once dubdom was created, the first witness was Abel, and Jesus was a sort of über-witness (borth martyroi: witnesses/martyrs)

2. "history repeats itself (or not)" - I agree with you in that Islam appropriated the Judeo-Christian heritage, as Christianity appropriated the Jewish heritage. So it's better to speak of appropriation of history than repetition in these cases. However, I would not call the Jewish step to monotheism 'unique'. Atenism was definately earlier under Amenhotep IV, and has the same development of polytheism-henotheism-monotheism (eg hymn of Aten: O sole god, like whom there is no other! - unfortunately I can't read ancient egyptian to check this translation, but this seems reasonable from what I've read about Atenism). IF the Jews were influenced by this (like Freud speculates in Der mann Moses und die monotheistische Religion), We should also say Judaism appropriated an already established pattern. IF this was not the case, however, we have your example of an exact repetition of development of poly-,heno-,monotheism in Egypt and Israel.

I'll leave Zoroastrianism out for the moment because its dualism tends to give me headaches :)
