Name something that JWs believe in that isn't in the Bible
by Awakened at Gilead inmy favorites are:.
"paradise earth": not in the bible.
"great crowd" of "other sheep" - two unrelated texts... put them together, and voila!, you just changed the destiny of millions!.

Is Pedophilia Really A Huge Problem With Jehovah's Witnesses?
by minimus injws say they are clean and pure and undefiled and not like the world but in reality there are those that do very evil things and they either have fallen through the cracks, have gotten disciplined or disfellowshipped.. we realize that just because a person says they are a christian, it doesn't mean they will always act like one.. regarding pedophiles, do you believe that jws have a huge problem involving an infestation of pedos?

It depends on who you are comparing them to. If you are comparing them to other cults, then no, they probably have the same proportion of child molesters. If you are comparing them to other religions, yes, I think that proportionally, there are more pedophiles in the midst of jws than most religions. If you are comparing them to society at large, yes, I think they have more pedophiles.
I wrote a research paper on child molestation years ago in college. What really surprised me was that studies show that *many men who wouldn't ordinarily molest children will do so under particular circumstances. First, they have to be living under some kind of unreasonable religious expectation of celibacy, including masturbation, (either forbidden to marry, such as priests or non-cleric men who are married to absent or ill wives). Second, they must be an autocrat, where they are the absolute authority in their household. Third, because they have such strong religious restrictions and believe they are the absolute authority in their own homes, they begin to feel a sense of entitlement. It is astounding, but many molesters think it is a lesser sin to have sex with their children than it is to have an adulterous affair with a woman.
JW men are under a strict sexual code of conduct (no masturbation, limited sexual experience within marriage) and can exert absolute authority in their households. All jws seem to me to have a sense of entitlement. So, there you have a dangerous cocktail. In addition, policies of the WTB&TS that include the two witness rule and unreasonable regulations about slander only make the problem worse.
Please note that I said "many men", not all men.

I write for a living, and even so, I still have to check my posts to make sure they don't come across the wrong way. Sometimes it is very difficult to make a point in writing, because the reader can't see your facial expression or hear your tone of voice. My feelings got hurt once on JWD, but it was no big deal. I really think it was a case of mistaken comprehension on my part. Sometimes when I'm giving someone my opinion on a jw related issue, I have caught myself writing things that could be hurtful, when really my irritation lies with the WTB&TS and not the poor soul who is seeking advice or comfort. Hopefully, I caught all of those during a read through before posting, but if not, and I've hurt someone's feelings, I am very sorry.
I'm certain that there are a few on this board who post things that are intentionally hurtful, but you know, there's got to be at least a few a**holes in a crowd.

Grass anyone?
by Quirky1 inthe title may have lured you here but since it is summertime i am just curious how many people here have yards they have to take care of?
if so, how big of a yard do you have?
what do you use to mow your yard?

Ha, I knew it! I knew guys love to mow grass. My husband is always in such a rush to get out there and mow, especially if the neighbors have already done their lawns or rain is in the forecast anywhere in the foreseeable future. We only own .18 acres, but the property is triangular shaped, so there's 190 ft of frontage. Also we live adjacent to a paper street (street that was planned about 100 years ago but never built), so there's extra grass for him to mow. He has a riding tractor, but I don't know what kind. I think it's from Sears. He also has a push mower to do the edges with and a bunch of weed wackers.
So, tell me, do other men drive themselves crazy trying to keep their grass even with the neighbor's? Is it just him, or that a guy thing? One other question; if you own a grill is anyone else aside from yourself allowed to use it?

I'm in need of song suggestions, please. Thanks in advance!!!
by TheSilence inmy brother and my mom are trying to find a song to dance to at his wedding.
we've pulled up a lot of lists of common songs and none of them are really what they're looking for.
i just came up with the song below as a suggestion, which i think is the best option so far, but i thought i'd see if any of our music connoisseurs could come up with some other suggestions.

Do you remember talks about how we serve Jehovah and not an organization?
by troubled mind ini remember a talk that a good friend of ours gave when he became an elder back in the late eighties early nineties .
he said in part of that talk " we serve jehovah not an organization " and he alluded to a sentiment that if one day the organization began to make claims it was more important than god or wanted us to do something contrary to god's word , than we had to be ready and prepared to know that was wrong and only worship jehovah .
it is something that stuck with me because at the time i just could not imagine what he meant ...i mean jehovah's directing the organization right so why would they ever steer us wrong .... .

Yes, but they also claim not to protect pedophiles, and anyone who can read knows that's not true!
Governing Body = Bible
I beg to differ. Governing Body = God

Is It A Struggle NOT To Get DF'd These Days?
by StAnn inseems like when i was young (back when that dinosaur in the green nwt was still roaming the earth), df'd people were rare.
a jw friend of ours was telling my husband (never a jw) that it's almost impossible not to get df'd.
my husband thought that was absurd until he started reading things on this board that folks have been df'd over.

I think it's always been a struggle not to get df'd. The difference is today you hear more about it due to the Internet. I got the ax in 1988 for circumstances surrounding domestic violence. About a year earlier, I knew a young sister who was df'd due to circumstances surrounding her rape by a brother. A lady who participates in KoolAidMan's Saturday night conference calls got it for being an abused wife back in the 60's. Because the WTB&TS claims that most are df'd for immorality, jws just assume when one gets the boot that immorality is the reason.
More young people may be getting df'd nowadays, because there's more information available to them about the WTB&TS's bullshit on line.

Steven T. Byington / Bible in Living English
by cathyk inthere's an article posted by william dalton at the andover townsman on steven t. byington, translator of the bible in living english.
there are some interesting tidbits about the man which i didn't know, including the fact that he was an anarchist!.
you might want to head over to the comboxes, because there's only me (with a neutral post) and a couple of rah-rah jw posts.

Thanks for the link on Byington's opinion of the NWT
You're welcome. I wonder if the WB&TS bought his translation, because i disagreed with their's.

If you haven't already, please check into Medicaid in your state. You and your whole family may be eligible for coverage. In the meantime, check with your local county hospital to see if they have any assistance programs that may either reduce or eliminate an emergency room bill.
Here is a link to Medicaid in Florida. http://www.dcf.state.fl.us/ESS/medicaid.shtml
Good luck!

Hey, Cathy, I posted the same article under "NWT" as well as a commentary by Byington on what is wrong with the jw Bible.
