can spirituality replace religion?

i was watching cnn, an d they asked this question and this one lady called in and claimed she wasn't raised in a religious household.

but she remembered when she was in elementary school that this jw girl asked her if she was spritual she said no, then the jw told her she would go to hell.

John 4:23-24

23 “But an hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth; for such people the Father seeks to be His worshipers. 24 “God is spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.”

I take this to mean a sort of communion (not in the Catholic sense) with human spirit and God who is spirit.

Luke 17 (KJV)
And when he was demanded of the Pharisees, when the kingdom of God should come, he answered them and said, The kingdom of God cometh not with observation: Neither shall they say, Lo here! or, lo there! for, behold, the kingdom of God is within you.

I take this to mean that when you have this "communion" with God, you do so "without observation", invisibly and in secret.

Matt. 6:6 - But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly.

Remember Jesus condemned the Pharisees for praying in public so as to be notice by others as being pious.

Matt. 6:5 - And when thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites are: for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward.

So when someone says they are spiritual. I take it to mean they have an inner belief in a higher power, but do not subscribe to any particular dogma or church.

I can't stop laughing...

i don't know if this is me being evil or whatever but i seriously can't stop laughing over this.. i got a message on my youtube channel about how my videos have inspired this user to learn doctrine as thoroughly as they can so they can preach the gospel of christ to their brothers.

it went into great detail about how much the videos inspired them with things to use from the bible, what places to look and how they are trying to memorize certain videos of mine.

the last sentence in the e-mail is "what kind of christian are you?".

Age of Adam

does anyone happen to know what the jws have to say about this?.

i know apologists usually have a convoluted answer for everything but i just can't think how they could possibly defend this.

so, each 'day' of creation is 7000 years long, adam was created on the 6th 'day', god rested on the 7th 'day', adam then dies at an age of something like 930 years!!.

Yes I remember something about a gap between the creation of Adam and of Eve. Leaving any amount of time we'd have to wait.

I remember being told that all of creation literally happened in approximately 49K years, and that Bigfoot was really demons because they smell bad.

Honestly, I've been out 25 years and I am shocked at how different the teachings are. I remember always hearing about "new light", I thought it was meant to be really NEW and not re-vamped, or ditched OLD teachings.

I went through the same thing with my mother and alcoholic father, and then later my JW husband.

Now I understand why my elder brothers never helped my mother, and why when I went to the elders for help they ignored my situation and blamed me.

My mother and I had to go through all of that abuse to protect the reputation of an organization. In effect LYING to the general public and other JW's about the health of the organization. The phrase "whitened sepulchres" comes to mind.

23 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye pay tithe of mint and anise and cummin, and have omitted the weightier matters of the law, judgment, mercy, and faith: these ought ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone. 24 Ye blind guides, which strain at a gnat, and swallow a camel.

Uphold the reputation of the org. rather than Jesus teachings. Isn't that EXACTLY what the Pope was and is doing?

i am actually excited about this since i think this could help assist a ton of people out of this organization!!.

i believe that the governing body is stepping up efforts to emphasize their unconditional rulership - every wt study article seems to make reference to their authority.

bobld -- what do you mean "prayers to them" prayers to the GB? Were/are the GB telling people to pray to them?

.Also all the prayers to them,shame on those who say those prayers.I would never say amen.Oh,well let the R&F worship men,idols,etc.

Forgive my ignorance on the subject, but why are very few pictures of the GB available? It seems they are very quiet and secretive about their own lives. If they say they maintain a low profile so as not to become objects of worship, yet they also say they serve members of the FDS who are commonly known amongst the R&F, their reasoning doesn't hold.

Therefore, if more were made known about the GB as people, documentary style, it would for me at least downgrade their status to human. If for example as much was known about their pasts as say the Pope. Or people were investigating them like they investigate the Pope.

Where do they live? At Bethel? In private homes? Are they married with children? Do they hold other jobs? Are there people who know them or have known them who have things to say but are being silenced for one reason or another? How do they behave in public? Above it all?

I would be very interested in finding out.

For those who choose to never question, and to live in the "scenario", Eller is right. In addition, it is an easier life "so long as those conditions persist". If the comfy rug is pulled out, the experience would create a shift in paradigm. Maybe even insanity, but not always.

If it is possible to re-program, to re-create your own mind, according to what "rings true" for you. If you are capable of recognizing patterns of behavior (i.e. automated behavior based on subconscious reaction). In order for this to work, it seems to me that there must be "Universal Truths", or at least "Universal Truths" as they relate to the human condition. Otherwise, what is "ringing true"?

The problem as I see it, with the Atheistic perception of reality, is that Atheism itself carries with it certain dogmas. Thus limiting a persons ability and existential suppleness. For instance, what if Jung's concept of a Collective Unconscious is true? Or the new theories that the mind can alter matter on an atomic level, leaving some to postulate that we, collectively, create our own reality.

Atheist can no more be absolutely sure of God, or human existence than and religious group. My brother is religiously atheistic, same as my other brother who is JW.

I do not believe that a person could effectively have his or her "crutches" knocked out from underneath them, unless they wanted to get rid of them. They would simply rationalize, according to their own ability to reason, and willingness to change their own personal paradigm.

How can one person coax another person to question their own paradigm? Does it come from without or within (Collective Unconscious, personal desire) or both?

What is the first step? Fearlessness?
