See Jackals' post above, Shamus. The issue is not whether you like watching them, but whether you think it's okay to let your small child participate.

LOL at shamus. Believe it or not, some people think it's a good thing, like playing baseball or learning to play the piano.

is that any different from pushing a child to participate in a sports team or to learn an instrument??
I don't know....you tell me.

While channel surfing the other day, I caught something on TLC called Toddlers and Tiaras. I watched it! I couldn't help myself! I was appalled, but at the same time the whole social implication of such a thing fascinated me. It was bizarre. Have you seen it? What do you think about entering kids in these kinds of pageants?

Should cult members be allowed to adopt or be foster parents?
by Mad Sweeney ini'm wondering what you all think..

I had wonderful JW parents. Yeah, they allowed me to marry extremely young and I was indoctrinated and made to drink the kool-aid, but they were good and loving parents. My mother, especially, was loving and kind-hearted, although she could be tough as nails when it was necessary. She was also very smart, and I think she was pulled emotionally and mentally many times in her life due to conflicts I know she had. But, she would never renounce the religion, but she never shunned my brothers either. She would have made an excellent foster mother.....another exception to the rule.

You make a good point, Shelby, but, still, I have to say it should be the very very very last resort. You, personally, are always the exception to the rule, my dear.

Would you want a child to stay with people that practice voodoo? Although good foster parents are not abundant, they are out there. IMO, weird off-the-wall suppressive, repressive, oppressive, mind-screwing religious practices and cults should be kept away from children. People that can provide food, clothing, shelter, love, education, and support can be located if the social workers are dedicated and hard-working.

JWs are obsessed with persecution
by life is to short inover the weekend i was around a group of jw's.
i have not been in such a setting for along time so it was sort of surreal.. so this one older jw woman started to talk about her neighbors and their little girls and how much she liked them.
she said they were a nice family, etc, that they watch each other homes when they go away on vacation, etc.

The mind f*ing games this religion plays is horrific for children. I remember being given a scenario where I was asked (as a small child) what I would do if a gun was held to my mother's head and I was given an ultimatum: "Renounce Jehovah or I will shoot your mother!"
I still remember the horrible fear, doubt, and guilt because I knew in my heart of hearts I could not watch my mother die. Such a sad sick question to ask a child.

No. But, the definition of 'cult' is vague. I consider the JWs to be a cult, but I don't think they are officially listed as such....not sure.

Positives of Growing Up JW
by Pig ini dont think any of us are glad we grew up in the org.
but i was thinking about people who get cancer, and if they are lucky enough to beat it often they will say that they were better for the experience.
before they got cancer they were stressed because they had to work extra hours in a shitty job to make ends meet, the kids were nothing but trouble and they spent their lives wishing that time would go faster, that week would be over, that the year would be over.

There were some positives. I feel it in my gut. I just can't exactly define them. I like myself (mostly) and am proud that I was able to jump some of the hurdles the JW mindset placed in front of me. So, I developed a sense of achievement to some degree ("we will overcome") and was able to pass that attitude on to my children.
