  Excellent point! And he had a career first as a carpenter....interesting...he didn't start his preaching work until after he had spent years working so he knew how the common man really had to struggle to get by.

  When I was in my early 20s I lamented to another JW friend that I was envious of a mutual friend of ours that had been accepted to Bethel. She said, "You know, having someone pick up after you, fix all your meals and do your laundry does not prepare you for the real world." Good point! She is still a JW, but had many good points like that.

  HELP!!- JT asked to become a MASON!

  i have been searching the net for some excellent sites on the masons.

  this past weekend we went down to nc for a wedding and my wife and i broke the news to our nonjw family that we were no longer involved with jw.

  i could not believe the open arm welcome my uncle and aunt were almost in tears- they told us we have seen you come home each yr from the main office in ny and then you got married and you would come home and we wanted to say something about the jw but you seemed to be so well respected by the local jw - whenever we would tell folks that our newphew was up in ny- the jw would get all excited- they told us they thought it was so sad for i only made $90 a month.

  I am not a mason, never played one on tv, and really don't know a whole lot about the organization.

  However, I have a couple of general comments about the various posts I have read here on the subject. First, when I was an active JW it was not uncommon for the organization to give the impression that many various other organizations out there were evil because they were mysterious/secret. So, I find it vert predictible that there are so many nonJWs and exJWs here that feel very suspcious of the Masons. Again, I really have no idea to say whether they are or are not, but I think it is important to point out that being in the JW organization teaches you to be suspicious...sometimes when there may be no need to be.

  Second, isn't it funny how organizations run by men are the secret ones? I know now that the Masons have their chick order (was it the Eastern Star?) I am curious if they are just as secretive, or if they just don't have anything to really be secretive about because the guys keep everything from the women, heehee.

  My best friend in high school was/is a member of her local grange, and here family has been for generations. She took me to a few meetings, and heehee, boy THAT was wierd! While I do not doubt they are benign, I could not help laughing at the secret code books that they have and the meetings that were secret, It just seemed really funny because 80% of the members were over the age of 65, and doing these fairly elaborate marching drills, etc.

  Forgive my ramblinb, but I get a kick out of secret groups. No insult to any on either side of the issue is intended. Isn't if funny how adults still need their clubs like when they were 10 year olds?

  By the way, as for Wicca, they are peaceful. Why I may not agree with their religion, I have known several in the religion and they were all loving people. They do not worship Satan.

  I had a good friend that wanted to get baptised when she was 12 but the elders asked her to wait at least a year because they wanted to be sure she wasn't doing it just to please her parents.

  It doesn't necessarily bother me to see kids get baptised, around 11 or 12 and up, depending on the kid's maturity. The average age up her seemed to be between 14 and 18.

  6 though...ahhhhh...that is too young! How can they know what is truth when they cannot even do fractions yet?

  It is a shame that you were subjected to such behind the back tactics. It is also very bothersome that it appears besides two people you spoke with directly the elders are relying on hersay.

  Please keep us updated on your situation. Even if you choose not to go to the last meeting, I am curious as to whether they will try to reach out to you since you are an elder.

  HAHAAH!

  Loved these! I must admit, though that even when I was a hardcore JW going door to door, I loved these types of jokes. A few (a very few, haha!) of my JW friends and I would frequently share these jokes.

  A fav cartoon of mine is one of Gary Larson's Far Side, with a family pretending to be furniture when JWs come to the door.

  How I Married A Borg

  Ray,

  When I first started reading your posts I felt that you were being a bit cold to call JWs Borgs. But, I guess that is because I was personally a witness for so long, it kinda of unnerved me.

  However, when I think of it, I can understand while you would use that comparison. They can seem cold like a cyberborg. My own mom, whom is the nicest person on the planet (seriously, she deals with the mental cases and older ladies in the congregation that the elders could care less about) has done a few cold things that are Borgish in nature. She would not attend any baby showers for myself or my sisters when we had kids out of wedlock. While I respect that she was doing it out of her conscience, it still hurt and seemed cold.

  Just an interesting way to express it. thanks for the input.

  Some good things I got from the JW Experience

  1. i was taught that if you believe something you should live your life to reflect that; (of course, i was not perfect in this and saw a lot of hypocrsy).

  2. i personally experienced acts of kindness towards my family in many times of need;.

  I thought that to be fair, I should probably list some good things that I personally got out of my 20 year JW experience:

  1. I was taught that if you believe something you should live your life to reflect that; (of course, I was not perfect in this and saw a lot of hypocrsy)
  2. I personally experienced acts of kindness towards my family in many times of need;
  3. I was taught to respect the elderly and to develop friendships with them;
  4. I was taught how to do research;
  5. I learned about public speaking;

  I did take several good things away from the experience, and now matter how I personally feel about doctrines and shady actions of some witnesses, I hope that all that have been entrenched in any religion has been able to carry something good from it. We can all learn something good from even the experiences that may have been overwhelming harmful to an extent.

  Life is what you make it, JW or exJW.

  yeah, I could list many more negative things...but why bother in this post? My invitation to all out there is to examine their experience and see what they can take out from it that was good. Not all will be able to do this, but it makes it easier for me get on with being a xJW to know that maybe I did learn something about something.
