An interesting topic and one that I have pondered often.
If they were really serious about preaching the good news they would use any method at hand even it were not legal in certain lands to do so to accomplish the preaching work.
How often have you heard said from the public platform "if a house were on fire you would risk everything to save the inhabitants and that is what our attitude to the preaching work should be'.
On the other hand the Society risks nothing. They could 'preach the good news' in countries were the work is outrightly banned, like Muslim countries, India(not quite banned but no foreign missionaries allowed to proselytize) and China by setting up illegal radio and tv station stations outside these areas to transmit the 'message' to deserving people inside.
Do they do it? Not on your life.

Why can we LOSE our Religion, but not LOSE it's effects on us?
by gumby inanother thread inspired by me chatting with our sweet little mary.... we who have exited the jehovahs witnesses religion, are now convinced we made the right move.
most of us have no doubt this religion is a destructive, cultlike religion that we wouldn't wish on anybody....and yet,.
....we still suffer the effects it had on us.

Interesting topic Gumby and one I have mulled over for a long time since my departure from the 'truth'.
At first I thought that I lacked humility and could not take the loss of position and prestige in the congregation that I once enjoyed. But then I could not reconcile this with the fact that I had always thought that I was a humble person; one who never sought personal prestige and who accepted any task given to me.
Then I realised that it wasn't pride that was my problem but a total loss of identity. I has been a witness all my life, had given up lots for my religion, education, work opportunities etc, and was therefore only defined by who I was as part of 'God's organization'. I suddenly lost all that through no fault of my own and although I thought I could just walk away, it has been a long hard and sometimes lonely walk.

responding to the Reasoning book on birthdays?
by BlackSwan of Memphis ini am helping someone out with a response to a jw about birthdays.
she wants to be able to have a comeback to his programmed response.
i am looking at the reasoning book section on birthdays.

I have never celebrated birthdays and still don't out of respect for my family's views.
However, my view is now that I want to celebrate my parent's lives (they are bt in their 70's now) and those of my children. Its not about being selfish, its about allowing other people to share in your life. -

the entire magazine will focus on jehovah the creator, jehovah's witnesses are they creationists, was the earth created in 7 literal days, a special ypa article dealing with creation.
the congregations are instructed to order additional copies (in addition to their regular supply) of this awake to place in the territories.. why all the special campaigns?

Do you regularly lie?
by JH inalthough i love my parents, very often they lie to try to get out of a jam.
then they have to lie again to cover the first lie.
and often for really stupid reasons, they will lie instead of saying the truth and being direct.

Again, not preach JWism but it was the way I was brought off and possibly something I don't want to strug off.

Read the book but not seen the film yet.
My personal take is the book was poorly written and the story line, especially the ending, was totally implausible. Having said that the plot was fast moving and action packed.
Dan Brown has made a vast fortune from a fairly mediocre novel.

Lots of Bethelites Not Happy With Downsizing
by Seeker4 ini had a long conversation last night with an old jw friend whose sister and brother-in-law are bethelites since the 1970s.
she is an artist, and he runs a small but important department there.. we were talking about the bethel downsizing (my friend was well aware of it), and i told him i figured his sister and b-i-l would be safe due to the fact that they are now in their 60s and have something close to 4 decades seniority.
but he said no, that they were worried that they would be asked to leave as well, sent into the circuit work or as special pioneers sent where the "need is great.".

What gets my goat is the way that Bethel Service is still held out as a career for young people.
Go to any District or Circuit Assembly and Bethel Service will be encouraged as a far better option than so called worldly education!

Elder removed proceedure?
by Synergy inwhen an elder gets removed or steps down, does he have to turn in his private elders book or can he keep it as a souvenier?
-
eyeslice
I simply handed mine in. I knew the rules and was still pretty much a loyal JW at the time despite having been stabbed in the back by few gutless fellow elders.
