Did You Know Any "Gay" Jehovah's Witnesses?
by minimus ini suspect a few witnesses were not "straight" but didn't act on their sexual preferences.. i knew one up and coming bethelite who was approached by the bethel heavies and talked to about his "effeminate mannerisms" and was pretty much told that he could become a more prominent menmber of the bethel family if he "became more masculine looking" and preferably found a bethel sister to marry.
he followed the counsel and was thereafter a regular designated bethel speaker at district conventions.
interestingly, all of his bethel buddies thought the whole scenario was a hoot, knowing that he was really an effeminate man suddenly now looking very hetero..

Focus on Watchtower Classes and Ranks

The rank structure always concerned me as a witness.
In India, I have seen the poorest of brothers and sisters and little travel for over a day to get to a district assembly and then spend a couple of nights in what can only be described as a cellar, sleeping on the concrete floor. My wife and I tried to spend time with these people but I didn't see any of the Bethel speakers down there.
On the other hand, back in the west we wanted to see a friend of ours who is, to use a term frequently used on this board, a 'Bethel heavy' who was a visiting speaker at our district assembly. We never saw him or his wife in the main auditorium, so went up to the chairmans office. It was like trying to get in to Fort Knox. There was no way they would even let us throught the doors of the hospitality suite before they had sent someone to check that brother X really knew us - and he would deign to would see us.
I guess "all animals are equal but some animals are more equal than others".

My city is running out of water! No good rain for years!
by Witness 007 inthe city of melbourne right at the bottom of australia is known as a mild and rainy climate.
but for the last four years we have been on water restrictions.
our dam is at 34.5 % with poor rain again this month.

I thought that Perth was even worse. I read somewhere that Perth might become the first major city in modern times to have to be abandoned because of water shortage.

So, there is no everlasting life...
by Quirky1 inme and my jw wifey were talking this morning.
the conversation was about her aunt that's dying of cancer.
we were discussing the issue of death and i mentioned that there is nothing we can do about it and that we will all have to go thru it at one time or another and she agreed and even spoke further about it.. i am thinking wtf, "what about everlasting life", since this is what they preach and are taught.

I agree with the comments of others here.
Certainly, my elderly parents are not really expecting the 'end' in their life time. The Society is sufficiently vague nowadays about when the end is really coming - they continue to preach 'keep on the watch' and to be 'awake' but time lines are definitely not mentioned.

Is it naive to believe that you will always be faithful to your partner?
by nicolaou ini was told i was naive for saying that i'd never cheat - ever.
but i meant it honestly.
i guess my question is, can it happen to anyone?
-

To answer the question. Yes it is naive to believe that.
It is realistic to understand that to make a relationship work and last requires hard work. If you do and you are blessed with the right partner then you will always be faithful.

Any Vegans on the Board?
by PrimateDave inmy new year's resolution is to make the lifestyle change to the vegan-pure vegetarian diet: no animal derived foods.. it is a change i have considered before on different occasions.
i didn't stick with the diet in the past due to lack of information, or perhaps the abundance of misinformation available on the optimum diet.
i've never been grossly overweight, probably never over 170 lbs.

Not vegan but a vegetarian.
I am not against eating meat per say but I do object to the manner that we in the west gorge ourselves on factory reared meat. If it was a case of fattening up a pig to slaughter and eat just once a year, I could go along with the omnivore argument. However, I challenge anyone to watch a video on the way that pigs are reared (sows are literally clamped horizontally in rearing pens so they don't roll over on their piglets) intensively and not think seriously about at least switching to free range. Even then, in a world that is rapidly running out of resources, it is hard to justify the expense of feeding grain to and watering animals - a vegetarian diet is far greener.
Finally, there are the health benefits. The USA, UK and West Europe have an adult population where the majority of adults and children are now over weight.
Having said all that, a healthy diet is no guarantee to health. I am vegetarian, weight about 140 lbs, run about 5 miles 5 days per week, don't drink too much and still I have high blood pressure!

WT on "Help those who stray from the flock"? - friends sent us an email
by truthseeker intoday was the first of the two parter series on browbeating the inactive to get back to the meetings.. my other half who has been inactive for a short while received an email from a "friend" who's still in, acknowledging it's been a while since they last made contact and could they stop by to see how we're doing?.
the moment of truth - friends who ignore you and make no effort to contact you when you leave suddenly get a guilt trip over an article in the watchtower.. anyone else here had their door bell rung, received a phone call or email from a "concerned" friend due to this study article, or is it still early days?.

Interestingly, my wife who is still in and very strong, wanted to go away this weekend. So we packed a few things on Sat and disappeared into the wilds for Saturday. Stayed at a very pleasant hotel and had a lazy Sunday morning.
I am sure I will be 'ear-marked' for a visit soon though!

Probably.
The Society adopts only one position on Gay people and that is they are all bad abd doomed to God's condemnation. I hope we here are a little more enlightened than that.

Where Are All of the JWs From Years Ago Now?
by minimus inwhen i look back, since i was born in the 50s, i see most oldtimers that i grew up are still connected to the organization.
that is, those who were in the 50s and 60s.. those that came in the 70s seemed to leave, pretty much.
the ones that came in the 80s and 90s seemed to be mostly mentally unbalanced and some still go to the meetings but many suffer from depression and are not as active as they "should" be.. are most of the witnesses that you knew still practicing or are they gone?.

Many of the real old timers have now passed away. I remember when I was growing up there were people in my congregation going back to WWI and we had one ex-missionary who had been to the 2nd Gilead class. These are all long gone.
The congregations today are oftem made up of 2nd, 3rd and even 4th generation witnesses. Many of today's elders are sons of elders. And, unlike the 60s and 70s I don't see any new famillies joining the religion. Where new ones do come a long as individuals and often they are the strange and disfunctional.
