You don't need to tell them anything. Really and truly.
Your main concern is that your friends and family won't have anything to do with you but you are doing almost nothing and they are still okay.
Just take it to the next level - start going even less and less - drop the ministry - do it all slowly and you may drop off the elders radar without having to write any letter or tell anyone - they will work it out for themselves.
If you are careful - and you can be if your partner is understanding - you can do the fade and not be viewed as a witness.
Then it will be up to your friends and family personally - they will not be told not to associate with you and will make up their own minds.
my personal story - i had decided I didn't want to be a witness but didn't want to lose my friends and family, I decided to first make friends outside the religion so that I had a support network. my first friend is now my husband. I had been going sporadically and ministry was almost non-existant, also if you read my profile you will see that to the elders I was more trouble than I was worth. My husband lived in a village about half hour from my town and I let him know the situation and basically hid him when we were in my town because I didn't want to get found out before I was safely viewed as no longer a witness and therefore safe from being DF/DA. He was lovely - we spent most of the time with his family and friends.
As it was my family chose to shun me - everyone except my mom and youngest sister anyhow. I have an aunty, uncle, five cousins and they have 4 kids or so each and I see nothing of them - but then i didn't see much of them before either - I kept in touch with them not the other way round.
My husband is the best, most loving, caring wonderful man I could ever dream of meeting - I certainly would never meet a dub like him.

Tired from it all
by WT=watchtrouble indo any of you here, ever feel that spending too much time on all of this is making you feel tired, drained and depressed?
even tho i don't post much i lurk a lot as i am naturally a quiet sort of person.
but lately i am feeling like my energy levels are low because i am focusing too much on this.

just take a break from it all - don't even lurk, then you can come back and share your experiences of what real life is like to all us spending all our time on here!
I sometimes take a break too - it's good to give your mind a break, to let it go over all the stuff you have read rather than contantly giving it even more to dwell on. My mind then goes into overdrive and I end up tired and grumpy because my mind is going so much that I can't sleep.

I am extremely odd
by joelbear69 ini am fascinated by things that are different from me.
what makes other people tick.
i am goofy and have a constant stream of consciousness going through my mind that when expressed verbally or in writing appears to most to be the mumblings of a mad man.

How many have heard of this latest JW Survival Kit?
by Frank75 init has long been pointed out by apostates, myself included, on this board and others that if the jw's really believed the end of this "system of things" is coming, why are they not making practical efforts to prepare.. .
the only thing the watchtower and awake will be good for after this believed meltdown is toilet paper!
"put that in your book!

2007- Witness Meetings= Why can't women wear pants/trousers??
by Witness 007 inwhen my mum went to her first meeting she was dressed to perfection, she wore nice ladies dress trouser/pants.
the witness stuying with her told her it was "not apropriate" to wear this to the meeting...in 2006 i was in a congregation where a sister would put a skirt on over her pants she wore to work.
it looked weird, but the pants ban still is in force 2007.

It's funny many of the dresses you see wore now days are much more revealing and unprofessional than a pair of woman's dress pants would be
too true!
also as pointed out - to most who look at magazine images of isrealites - theres not alot of difference between the mans overgarment or whatever they call it and the womans - what is different is the cut. womens trousers are cut different to mens, they are therefore womens clothing and a woman wearing them is wearing womens clothes - just dare a bloke to try em on for fit if he says they are mens!

WERE YOU EVER A SUBJECT OF K. HALL GOSSIP???
by chuckyy inwhilst a jw, one thing that was evident to me was the constant gossip and backbiting.....being nice to someones face and then talking about them behind there backs.were you ever a "victim" of this sort of behaviour???
is it as common as i suspect from cong.
to cong???.

yeah i was - i always liken jw congregations to living in a very small town - everyone knows everyone and like to talk about them. no offence to anyone in a small town and as dubs they can't use their minds to educate themselves so they spread evil about other people to make their lives feel better.

Initiatory Force Used By JWs
by WTWizard inperhaps you haven't realized it, but the average jw will, in the course of a typical day, initiate the use of force, coercion, or fraud (or all of the above) many times through the day, in behalf of the watchtower society.
this is often difficult to see how, when the watchtower society drills it into people's heads that this is the truth.
but, especially for the benefit of anyone who is headed into the organization and thinks this is the truth, let's look at some ways force, threat of force, and/or fraud is initiated in the course of witnessing.. let's start with the meetings.
