  Thomas Paine "Age of Reason"

  on another thread purporting to start a discussion of this work, some suggested that it be restarted in a new thread, as the consideration there had begun in a polluted way and had only stayed at that level.

  since things poorly begun usually end worse, i am starting the thread as some have requested.

  i am currently beginning to read age of reason, and will return to it from time to time as time itself allows.

  this is a baseball tribute thread.

  please post anything and everything about baseball memories, the game, your favorite team, players opinions on the designated hitter rule.

  baseball brings back the magical feelings of childhood and tagging along with my older siblings to the little league games played at the parks my mother worked when she was the art director for mobile parks and recreation.

  He's 9. And what do you expect- Little League distracts from preaching, teaches a competitive spirit (not) and provides lots of bad association (other 9 year olds)

  Interesting, Ben Franklin ever the pragmatist, didn't actually disagree with Paine, he just pointed to the results if people en masse rejected religion.

  The point that Franklin misses, I think, is that when someone is taught to reject "vice" because of certain natural, negative consequences, there is a better likelihood of success among most people. If they are taught to reject vice because of the power of an "Almighty Punisher", they will be obedient so long as they believe in the "Almight Punisher." Once their believe breaks down, so does all resolve at avoiding vice.

  I just finished reading "Age of Reason" last night. (took a few detours in reading other stuff along the way) A couple of thoughts:

  • Writers, politicians, and philosophers were quite brilliant 200 years ago. Imagine if a national figure wrote like that today??!!!
  • With such simple logic that defeats the whole premise of the bible, why is it that so many still cling to it??? It really is, as Paine describes, a book of violence, rape, and unimaginable brutality.

  I would love to offer the work to more intellectual JW's as "astounding logical reasonings of one of the Founding Fathers" and see how long before the book gave them a "flat tire of faith"

  I have to say, I totally agree with this thread. One of the greatest joys I have had since being freed is coaching my son's little league team. The feeling of exhiliration when he throws three strikes is beyond compare. (Much better than convincing someone that there is a new system!!???!!) As someone who was raised "in" I am living vicariously through him- no doubt pushing him excessively sometimes... (I'm a dad- what do you want??)

  I cant believe this was off limits. Something so good. The JWs had it all wrong. Just glad I realized this in time.

  no more bible study slip reports. WHY?

  i apologize if this has been discusses before.

  a few months ago publishers were told not to hand in individual study reports for bible studies.

  remember, we had to hand in a separate report for each bible study with name and address of bible student.

  The bible study slips were a waste of time and paper. Some new GB must have been a Secretary at one point and knew that no one reads them. The pioneers diligently fill them out thinking that they are part of an important record keeping process. Then they are dumped in the round file most of the time.l

  i have been fading for years now.

  i give less and less a shit about what the jw's want or say or do.

  i love my family and since my wife is still in although also inactive her rabid family is making the fade tough since i love and respect her dad.

  Depends on what you want.

  As you know- you have 2 choices:

  1- let them have it or

  2- say that the rumor you heard was just speculation- might have been 3 weeks ago, maybe 3 months ago, cant remember, really not important. Oh and been missing all those meetings because of stress, illness, large tumor growing in your big toe, etc, etc. Really love the brothers, appreciate their concern, oh and what was the real deal with that Dateline thing about the child molesters on bodies of elders???

  my daughter gave me two pouches of poison..i put one down - all gone the next morning,!!!.

  the next night i put another pouch down, all gone!!
