Great job Barbara. Did Martin Luther think the pope would read his letters nailed to the door of the church? Of course not! It was the broader audience that created the revolution!

Letter to the Writing Department from Barbara Anderson
by Dogpatch ini thought i knew you.
an open letter from barbara anderson to watch towers writing department.
in 1517, martin luther wrote in a letter to archbishop albert of mainz: you must graciously forgive that i, that scum of the earth, am so bold as to dare to address a letter to you.. yes, i know, you think of me as scum, just like mainz believed of luther, wondering how i dare write you a letter, someone jehovahs witnesses disfellowshipped back in 2002. i was accused of being an unrepentant sinner and condemned for causing divisions, then labeled apostate because i spoke out publicly on nbcs dateline tv program aboutthe child sexual abuse policies that protected pedophiles policies that you helped formulate.

Its funny, after an article like this (they come out every year) you would think the elders would be training the MS's, encouraging them, giving them chances to grow, etc.
However- I found the opposite to be the case. The "body of elders" is an insular group wanting to maintain the status quo- no competition from young bucks. It takes a lot of years for the "in crowd" to become comfortable enough with a young MS to even consider them as an elder. And just plain old baptized publishers becoming an MS- forget it- you practically have to live with your tongue up the a$$es of the elder body to even be considered. Very heirarchical. Lotsa BS. Glad I'm outa there.

Ive done a 10 mile loop in the Catskills on Wittenburg, Cornell and Slide peaks- took us 2 days- camped in the saddle between Cornell and Slide. Also did a 10 mile loop in the Adirondacks- Wolfs Jaw, Gothic, and one other peak I cant remember the name of.
Great fun! Never thought I'd be able to do something like that. My kid being in Boy scouts has introduced me to some great mountaineering experiences.

What are the worst pictures in My Book of Bible Stories?
by cedars ina few comments from muddy waters and mummatron on another thread peaked my curiosity and led me to revisit some of the illustrations in the my book of bible stories.
i don't appear to have my old copy from when i was a child (thankfully), so i checked out the images over on watchtower.org where the entire book can be read online.
the images below are taken from what is displayed on that website, although it wouldn't surprise me if there are equally awful images that haven't been used.. so which of the images below are the most grotesque and inappropriate for children?

the wts got burned a few years ago when they bought a prop in Kent NY and spent 5 years trying to get an Assy Hall developed there. The locals and the land use boards fought them like crazy. Then they bought and developed in Newburgh. I would guess the GB (or whoever is in charge) told them to hedge their bets- get options on 2 properties and see where the development would be easier ("where Jehovah's spirit directs" is how they would state it). Its a clever maneuver.

- you can accomplish this with an option to buy and not put the whole purchase price of the property at risk,
-the option doesnt have the effect of screwing with the local property tax assessments like an actual purchase does (can you imagine- $21 million- on the rolls, off the rolls, on the rolls- it would suck to live there)
-I still dont get why you disguise 50% of the purchase price as a "consulting fee"- that seems awful shady.

The most interesting thing about this is that almost half of the purchase price of the parcel is labeled a "consulting fee." Now...let me think...why would an organization call half of the purchase price "consulting."
Seems to me that it would have the effect of lowering the accessed value. If there was ever a property tax issue WT could produce a sale agreement that showed a purchase price of 50% of actual value.
Ramapo has an ongoing problem with religious groups taking property off the tax rolls (usually they are orthodox Jews). My guess is- WT smelled that the property tax issue might be a problem- hedged their bets with this contract and eventually dumped the deal over fear of taxation.

I think we have it backwards
by lrkr inyou know how when people come out of being a jw they say things like- but the bible is a good book- its just the religion that is bad.
or when describing muslim extremists commit some atrocity, people say- the religion is bad- but the koran is a good book.
or when you observe orthodox jews abusing members of their family- it is said- its the religion that is confining and doent allow leaders to be held accoutable- but the torah is a good book.. i think we have it backwards!!

Yes- but extreme conviction in what?
People who are extremely convinced that vitamins are good for you may write books, annoy friends, irritate relatives and blog alot- but I never heard of a vitamin fanatic killing, bombing, suppressing, isolating or shunning.
Only the sacred texts allow such behavior.
