We are the other people (long but well formated)
by IP_SEC ini came across this piece some time back and thought some of you might find it interesting.. .
"we are the other people".

Intresting idea. Maybe there were several creator gods and made their own people, which is a common thing in creation stories. For example the reason why Chinese call themselves "dragons" is because in the the Chinese creation story, the father of the Chinese people was a dragon god.

God in a nutshell (a historical perpective.)

then he is malevolent.

1. Depends on how God is viewed. Evil is merely a side effect of free will, in the Bible, angels have free will. In pagan religions, Gods had all characteristics of people and thus could feel jealousy, hate, and resentment.
2. Religion also helps people be generally good, but is up to the worshipper. There was an experiment done in 20/20, where a cashier at a restaurant "accidentally" gave the costumer too much change. A lot of people did notice and retunred the money. When asked, many replied things like, "Karma", or "Thou shall not steal" or I think one person mentioned the golden rule and some said it was just their concience. Many conflicts in history related to religion, merely use religion as a front. For example, "Manifest Destiny" in the 1800's was endorsed by many religious nuts, but was really an effort for political power, rescources, and eliminating the number of potential enimies at the borders.
3. I'm not one into organized religion either. People though do it as a sign of devotion.
4. Why do people even had the need for a God? And why do many religions have a lot in common? There are signs of religion even looking at the practices and artifacts of early man' burials and even idols have been found. Why even make the need for an idol? The concept of sacfrice dosen't make much sense to me, and I doubt it would be a common concept if there was no inspiration for it. Sure you can explain that, it was because people needed an explanation to their world. But why would this explanation involve idols, sacrifices, prayers, passed on wisdom, immortal souls, and a sense of "spirituality"? Even to as far as distant islands and Native American tribes. -

Dosen't the Bible also make refrences to Hades? Heh but most likely as a place and not a god.
But a couple of things must be kept in mind, I've gone to Liberal Christian sites and they seem to know what they are dealing with:
1. The Gospels had their own theological biases and ideas when writing the books of the Bible.
2. When the scrolls themselves were copied, there were spelling errors here and there, and biases by the translator.
3. When translating an iffy word, context, connotation, and symbolism should be taken in account(this is part of the debate on the word "pornia" in the NT).
In my opinion, the Bible maybe was easy to read at some point, but it's been thousands of years of mucking up and that it's diffucult for man to fathom supernatural things(or even odd scientific things, like things existing and moving before space and time), so heh. -

Should suicidal or self destructive people have free will?
by The Dragon inbeen going through my head lately....if you try to prevent them from doing what they want...they see you as the enemy...but are you?.
if you take away their freedom to do so.....are they no longer free?
will they hate you...or thank you when they come to their senses?.

Thank you jgnat, that's what I was trying to say.
This matter is not subjective, a mind far too deluded by mental disorders, drugs, or anything of the sort is something well recognized by the Psychology community. Sure there are some who simply want to end thier life for no reason, or "emos" who want attention, but there are true and real cases of people who are suicidal, and most have thier heads clouded with some disorder or hormones.
Think of it this way: Remember those "Kool-aid" drinkers who did mass suicide? Their minds were under the influence of a cult. -

Sincere Question to Anyone who Believes in God
by Big Tex inlately it's occurred to me that one day i will die.
being raised in a cult that teaches you, you will live forever without dying will warp perspectives.
and i've been working hard on coming to terms with that realization, and it's becoming more and more okay.

Big Tex, getting back to your first post, well I found this article intriguing, it is a "debate" consisting of Micheal Shermer's(editor of Skeptic mag) response to a book by Deepak Chorpra on evidence for the afterlife, and Chorpra's rebuttal to it.

Euthanasia and suicidal tendencies should now be confused with each other. A person who wishes for Euthanasia wants to die to end physical suffering that he or she has very very little chance of recovering such as a vegetative state.
Suicidal tendencies are classified as phychological disorders, people with suicidal tendancies are not in thier right mind and are suffering from reversable psychological effects(but it's going to take a lot of professional help).
To give a suicidal person the right to commit suicide because his or her self-pity, deppression, or stress "tells" them to, is like giving a new mother with post-pardum deppression the right to kill her babies, and if she does, put her in prison instead of a mental hospital. Remember there is a reason mental hospitals exists, not just to cage, jab, and give lobotomies to eccentric people. -

So much for original sin, eh.
How come people who were baptized and those who weren't can pretty much act the same? Lol. -

You Too Can Work For Nothing
by Clam inwhilst "reading" the april 15 watchtowera, i came across an article called disabled yet eager to serve.
i found it quite upsetting, and yet i have to accept the paradigm shifts in play here.. .
a brothera in el salvador has lost both of his hands in an accident, but has designed tools which adapt to his disability, thus allowing him to continue in his chosen building trade.

One of the things that compelled me when I believed in "The Truth" was the lengths people go to serve the WTS. The new DVD has footage of people in Africa walking for days and even swimming trying to reach the Assembly or convention hall. In the Assembly Hall there were old women on crutches who were still preaching.
Ugh now I think it's sickening, and an exploitation on people's need to devote themselves to some form of spiritual connection. It's just like those people walking on their knees to pilgramiges to a site were somone saw water leak out of a statue of Mary. -

Well, I noticed four main universial things about religion:
1.Afterlife or reincarnation
2.A creator, or creators
3.Morals and wisdom
4.A source of evil, whether it be in a demon, evil god, or man's own mentality(for example desire in Buddism)
I noticied consitencies in all world religions, which is one of my reasons for beleiving there is something out there. Sometimes I wonder if elephants have a religon since they grieve their dead. Humans also don't take death very well and need to grieve.
So if there is an afterlife, this grief makes me wonder if it's such a good place afterall :/
