The darkened companion
by free2beme ini was sitting at my chair, quiet and not speaking, just like my mother had always told me to behave at the meetings.
the speaker was talking about times past, and promised futures, and we followed along periodically with references looked up in our bibles.
the sound of pages being shuffled through, filled the air at times and you could also hear people whispering silent comments in the distance.

Why do some people answer your question with another question?
by booker-t inthis burns me to no end when people do this.
i feel the whole world is getting like this day by day.
people can't just say yes or no or a direct answer anymore it always has to be with a question, or going in circles without ever answering the original question, or down right evading the question.

I didn't answer with a question here - but likely you still won't like what was stated.
We will never know.......

Why should I bother replying to a topic started by a poster who hardly ever responds to replies, even to acknowledge that they have read them?

Is the UK failing it's children?
by New Worldly Translation inthere was an interesting program on bbc's newsnight about the recently released unicef report on child well-being.
the uk came bottom of the list with scandanavian countries and the netherlands top.
this report comes after another list placing the uk 37th in the best countries to live in the world, below such places as latvia and panama (no offence to those respective countries but we in the uk, maybe being delusional, expect to be higher).

This study is on the wellbeing of children in wealthy nations - so of course children in impoverished countries are going to be worse off! But we have to ask ourselves - is this good enough? Why are some countries so much better for children than others? Why do twice as many infants die in their first year in the USA compared to Iceland? How do we measure national success?
The full report can be viewed here:
http://www.unicef-icdc.org/presscentre/presskit/reportcard7/rc7_eng.pdf
I think that most of the categories measured could be positively influenced by parents. Gill is right, parenting is grossly undervalued, but then again, we seem to do it so badly! It isn't viewed as a massive responsibility, the most important thing a person will ever do in their lives. How many parents to be have prepared, planned, searched their hearts and minds about what they are going into?
These kids are going to be the policemen, doctors, nurses, carers, scientists, teachers, politicians and plumbers when we are in our dotage - we will need them! Looking forward to it?

I think you did the right thing - she had the opportunity to hail you if she wanted help. Since she had a phone with her, she wasn't relying on someone to get help for her if she needed it. And she may not have appreciated being approached by a stranger. For that matter, she may have just stopped to take a call!

Crimewatch - LIVE at my flat! & Have you been a victim?
by Crumpet inso this is my 7th night living in my new place.
last night i was getting ready to watch crimewatch on bbc1 when i hear some strange noises out the back.
i take a look - there's two men breaking in to the flat next door but one - breaking the glass and then climbing in.. shortly after whilst i am still wondering if i really saw that - i am making a cup of tea and look out of my kitchen window and see a dubious character in a baseball cap trying car doors then stomping away and then coming back.

My family were burgled while we were out when I was about 12. They tipped my mum's collection of plastic beads out onto the bed, but didn't fancy any of it, and made off with £6 in change.
When I was in my early twenties I left a briefcase on the car seat when I left the car for two minutes to meet someone at a train station in Runcorn. D'Oh!!!! The car window was smashed, and I found the briefcase emptied out under a bush on the edge of the carpark. There wasn't anything in it worth nicking!
That is my catalogue of crime victimhood over 35 years. I have found never having anything worth stealing a useful strategy.
On the other hand, I once dropped my purse (wallet, not handbag) containing all my cards and a chequebook, in a hotel bar, and it was handed in to reception intact.
Oh yes, I am white, and you can see where I live.....

Yes, it is true, it is foggy and rainy all the time, we all have bad teeth, and we all talk like Dick van Dyke in Mary Poppins.
