When I first left a friend dedicated a song to me, R.E.M's 'Losing My Religion'. I then went right through my house and threw out every shred of evidence I was ever a member of a cult. I called it my 'cleansing ritual'.

What forbidden music did you listen to?
by brinjen init may have been done before, if it has it's being done again.. what worldly music did you listen to?
i'm talking about the singer/band that made the elders blood boil and got you whispers and stares at the kingdom hall.. i was an eighties child so for me it was madonna!
the lacy tops and bras, crucifixes, slutty makeup and openess towards sex was the perfect outlet for me.

Cranking up the stereo to songs such as 'Like A Virgin', 'Material Girl' & 'Papa Don't Preach' was the perfect rebellion. I even went to meetings with streaked hair with half a tube of gel in, all messed up, black nail polish etc. I spent quite a bit of time in the back room with elders over my appearance & attitude.
What was your musical rebellion?

I never would've made it (and social reinforcement for self-consistency)
by IP_SEC ini look back at my life as a jw and you know what?
i know i never would have made it through armageddon any way.. i realized for a long time i was just a walking meat sack to jehovah.
only thing i didn't understand was why he would allow me to be in his organization?

I look back at my life as a JW and you know what? I know I never would have made it through Armageddon any way.
I can relate to that, I remember feeling exactly the same way. I never felt a part of their organization even though I was raised as one. I felt there was nothing I could ever do that would be enough for Jehovah to let me into his new system. It's a horrible feeling.
They're very much like polititians in that way, they use the fear angle, make you work your arse off dedicating your whole life to them and that you need them to have any hope of not dying a torturous death at armaegeddon.
I was interested in the occult and mythology from an anthropological point of view. I was interested in the martial arts. Captivated by lost/past civilizations whose time periods seemed to conflict with bible chronology.
Same here, I still practice yoga. I never bought the whole 'meditation exposes you to possession of demons' rap. Again, the fear factor to make you feel you need them.
It took a long time but slowly all the inconsistencies in my soul congealed in to one self-consistent philosophy. I found ya'll and realized I wasn't crazy after all.
To quote one of my favourite bands, Green Day from their song 'Minority'

For those having sex in kent this morning it must have given a whole new meaning to the phrase "The Earth moved"
As long as they were married, it was missionary with no tongue kissing, thrusting, moaning or movement whatsoever, that's OK. May god strike them down at armaegeddon if they skipped their door to door ministry or sunday morning meeting because of it though. Did they check the watchtower index first?

"Cut Off" Orchestra?
by brinjen ini was watching a tv show last week called 'the chaser's war on everything".
for those who don't live in australia it's a political satire program.
one of their sketches was award ceremonies such as the oscars & the orchestra that cuts off the long and boring acceptance speeches.

Reminds me of an episode of the Simpsons we saw a few years ago when Marge is describing how lonely she was, so lonely that she once invited JWs in to talk for 3 hours, but that they escaped when she went to the kitchen for drinks or something. My wife looked at each other and burst out laughing when we saw that.
I remember that episode, they did another later on where Marge bought a new door bell and desperate to hear it being pressed she waited by the door and gets excited when she sees Jehovah's Witnesses approaching her door. Just as their walking up the path, one of the dubs asks the other whether they really should be doing this, forcing their beliefs on others. They decide to 'get real jobs' and walk off throwing their watchtowers away. Marge is left at the door mumbling " I would have faked interest".

In Australia, we had 'Rage' on Saturday mornings (music videos). Lots of cool action shows on meeting night that I never saw. My JW grandmother was very strict about cartoons as well " if you believe in that, you may as well believe in Father Christmas". I now watch The Simpsons, Family Guy, American Dad, South Park, Happy Tree Friends I could go on. The more sick and perverse, the better!

JWs leaders:pacifist?
by glenster inabout a generaton ago, the jws leaders' stance was that a jw could defend themself--john 15:13 ("the watchtower," june 1, 1968, p.347).
it was their expanded rules about worldliness that prevented jws from being able to work for the government, including the police and military and defend others.. the jws leaders still have expanded ideas about worldliness and government involvement.
but do the jws leaders still allow a jw to defend themself or have they changed that to pacifism?.

I agree with Carla (even though I also don't have kids). The attacker is the one with the choice, they can choose whether they attack you or not. What if you're trying to fight off a rapist? You can't allow yourself to be raped, that's committing fornication but at the same time they do discourage Dubs defending themselves. Maybe they don't want people to realise their own strength, that encourages independance.
