It's probably in the circular file. calling up brooklyn with questions throws up the red "apostate" flag. Normal JWs follow the chain of command and ask their local elders.

Did the DFing policy make you emotionally distant?
by Open mind infor those who spent many years in the jw religion, what effect did the knowledge that your friends or family could instantly be "poofed" out of existence by a judicial committee have on you?
did it cause you to withdraw emotionally?
looking back over the decades, ( i'm a 3rd gen jw in my forties, mentally out but physically in ) i can remember consciously thinking about whether a new friend was going to be around "for the long haul".

I got pretty jaded and learned to predict a future DFing fairly accurately. If a person didn't show any of the "telltale" signs like withdrawing from Witness activities, not taking something seriously, or just didn't seem very concerned about the "end" coming, I'd allow myself to get close. But if I sensed anyone was going to get dfed, then I'd cut ties emotionally. It was pretty amazing to think that I could at the flip of a switch despise someone with whom I've been friends for years. There was one exception. I never was mad at him, just disappointed. We would have been friends even if we weren't witnesses.
I just wish I could work up the nerve to call him up one of these days. He lives in my area. But, he was DFed for sleeping with a girl he met online (who is now his wife of several years), and from what I hear from his mom he's "trying to come back." I'm afraid if I call him up he'll tell his mom who will in turn spill the beans to my mom and "out" me before I'm ready. -

JW's on my block!!
by Wordly Andre init was about 5pm yesterday, i noticed 2 men in suits walking around my block, at first i thought they were only there to visit one house, but then they started going door to door, they were holding a magazine after the first house so then i knew, they were dubs, i grabbed my shot gun, holy water, and crucifix, and changed into my jehovah's witness protection program t-shirt.
too bad i had to leave home before they got around to my place, but i won tickets to disney's halloween treat, so i didn't get to confront them.
but what is up with door to door work so late?

When I was pioneering Wednesdays were our designated "late" days where there would be meetings for service at 9, 12, and 3. I remember going out until 6 o'clock in the evening sometimes.

Why can't Witnesses Gamble? There's nothing in the bible about it!!!
by Witness 007 inif caught in any form of gambling you will be disfellowshiped!!!!!
the principles are "gambling is greedy and selfish, putting faith in the goddess of good luck.
" this is lame!

The whole "Goddess of Good Luck" thing is such a ridiculous notion. I actually put $5 down on a Nascar pool today.

A bunch of us went to a concert one night and we all got trashed beyond belief. I drank 1/2 pitcher of Guinness along with whatever other drinks people were handing me. I hated the band, but I had beer headphones so they sounded really good. After getting another drink at the bar I turn the corner and see a friend plant a huge kiss right on the mouth of a sister. I was feeling quite competitive, so when I got up to the group I did the same thing. She didn't kiss back and called me later to ask me what it was about. I told her I was just messing around, and not to worry about it. She shrugged it off and never mentioned it again. It didn't even make things weird between us. What a crazy night.

"How Cults Work" -- A Comparison with Jehovah's Witnesses.
by B_Deserter inthese are selected comments regarding the article posted here: http://people.howstuffworks.com/cult.htm.
there is no meaningful difference between a cult and a religion in terms of faith, morality or spirituality.
the primary differences are that a "cult" operates outside of mainstream society, often calls on its followers to make an absolute commitment to the group and typically has a single leader, whereas a "religion" usually operates within mainstream culture, requires varying levels of commitment from its members and typically has a leadership hierarchy that, in practice, can serve as a series of checks and balances.. jws definitely operate outside of mainstream society.

It takes more that just having a charismatic leader to be a cult. Last I knew, you could openly disagree with the Pope and still be a Catholic. Try disagreeing with the Governing Body and still being a Witness.

I have never, not even once, seen anyone provide any real, tangible reason to believe in God. Everyone who tries falls into a briar patch of logical fallacies and premises that have been thoroughly debunked for over 150 years. The latest "debate" I saw, the people in the God camp lost in their opening statement, since they appealed to the Bible even though the agreed-upon ground rules stated that they would prove God's existence without using it. And yet, these pseudo-scientist play the "persecution" card when they're not even being persecuted! It's a freaking JOKE. Seriously, it's like a white man complaining about racism towards white people. Yeah, you have it so tough when you belong to the same group the people in the highest echelons of power in this country do. Want to teach creationism or ID? Fine, just keep it out of the science classroom, because it is absolutely, positively, NOT science.

"and that perhaps life is not just the result of accidental, random chance."
I am sick and tired of this straw man argument. Natural Selection is neither accidental nor random. It is no more "random chance" than lightning hitting a lightning rod is. -

Dorktacular,
The answer is that the men who have become JWs were changed personality-wise. They didn't know "the truth" when they were doing all those things, and they repented of their sins. A child who was born into the JWs knows better. There is even a scripture that says it is far worse to know the truth and sin than to sin ignorantly or something like that. Now this killer dude probably KNEW what he was doing was wrong, but anything you'd done before you were a JW doesn't count, because baptism "washes away your sins." If you get baptized and THEN sin, it's a lot worse.
Really, this is Jehovah's Witnesses 101 stuff here. I'm surprised no one gave you an answer.
