Typically the break-off groups from the large high-control group tend to be even crazier. Just look at the mormon sects out there.

What is with the JW hate towards the depressed?

There was an article on depression a couple years ago in the Awake that addressed it quite well, actually. It encouraged people who have depression to seek medical help, as it is no more shameful than having a cold. They also had examples of people whose elders made it worse by saying they were lacking. The society doesn't encourage elders to hate depressed people, I think what it really is is a lot of elders simply don't understand it. I was telling a NURSE about it at my last doctor's visit and she didn't even understand.
Most people think that clinical depression is the same as regular depression, which is not true. They think that because regular depression happens for a reason, then clinical depression must happen for a reason, too. It can, but not always. Most of the time, clinical depression happens when someone feels down, worthless, and unloved for and extended period of time (at least 2 weeks) and for no conceivable reason. The reason they feel that way is a chemical imbalance in the brain's seratonin levels. It can be affected by the amount of daylight one experiences or the season as well.
The Awake article directly stated that feeling depressed is not due to being spiritually weak, and advised those with the symptoms to seek medical treatment. -

Would Witnesses Kill If Ordered? Probably!
by metatron inas a functioning cult, would jehovah's witnesses kill someone, if ordered?
i believe that many would.. while some might think this is farfetched, i can cite some examples that manifest a lack of concern.
for the lives of others, that could easily be extended into murder or manslaughter.. 1) forcing older brothers into jobs at bethel that were far too strenuous for them - as a means of.

"We were taught that we would just be observers while Jesus and the angels would do it, so that idea is over the top."
BUT!!! Thanks to "new light," it can change. It doesn't matter how long the belief was held, if the GB says it's out, it's out. I think the "observer" doctrine could DEFINITELY change, but it's not likely to. I think most JWs would have a moral sense enough to realize when enough is enough, so they'd lose a lot of members, which they DONT want. Plus, JWs going out and killing people will draw a lot of attention to Brooklyn and the government would come down hard and erradicate the majority of Watchtower activities, which, funnily enough, is almost EXACTLY what they teach is going to happen, they only leave out the part WHY JWs get the crack-down. -

The problem is the New Light doctrine that basically allows them to interpret any scripture they want in any way they want. I remember asking myself and other witnesses: if the society asked you to do something that was clearly against scripture, would you do it? I got a lot of "of course not"-s and "the society would NEVER say that!"-s but what if the society had published an article that "explained" why the scripture doesn't mean what it says. In this example regarding murder, what if the society were to order the murder of Ray Franz or another apostate. What if they used examples in the OT of Joshua slaughtering the nations of Canaan to justify the killing of people today because it is "under Jehovah's order." That is the main problem I have with the religion. The Governing Body can publish an article that interprets scripure how they choose, and the rank and file HAVE to accept it. Now if they order something utterly ridiculous like "kill 100 worldly people every week," they'd lose people in droves, but there are too many that are FANATICAL enough to do it, especially with all the talk about following "Jehovah's" direction no matter how much you disagree.

I was listening to this song from Neon Bible and I wanted to share the lyrics to one of the songs:
"Intervention"
The king's taken back the throne
The useless seed is sown
When they say they're cutting off the phone
I tell 'em you're not home
No place to hide
You were fighting as a soldier on their side
You're still a soldier in your mind
Though nothing's on the line
You say it's money that we need
As if we're only mouths to feed
I know no matter what you say
There are some debts you'll never pay
Working for the Church while your family dies
You take what they give you and you keep it inside
Ever spark of friendship and love will die without a home
Hear the solider groan, "We'll go at it alone"
I can taste the fear
Lift me up and take me out of here
Don't wanna fight, don't wanna die
Just wanna hear you cry
Who's gonna throw the very first stone?
Oh! Who's gonna reset the bone?
Walking with your head in a sling
Wanna hear the solider sing:
"Been working for the Church while my family dies
Your little baby sister's gonna lose her mind
Every spark of friendship and love will die without a home"
Hear the soldier groan "We'll go at it alone.
I can taste your fear
It's gonna lift you up and take you out of here
And the bone shall never heal
I care not if you kneel
We can't find you now
But they're gonna get the money back somehow
And when you finally disappear
We'll just say you were never here
Working for the church while your life falls apart
Singing halleluiah with the fear in your heart
Every spark of friendship and love will die without a home
Hear the solider groan, "We'll go at it alone"

Two kinds of Witnesses--and explanation of the Governing Body

I've come to realize there are two kinds of Witnesses: the idealists and the legalists. The idealists are the typical rank and file. They believe firmly in the ideal that the Watchtower society is directed by God, and the motives of the JW clergy are nothing but spiritual. They are ignorant of the business-like nature of the organization. They don't think about all the rules and regulations because they either don't know or don't care to know. To them, the goals of the WTS are completely, 100% altruistic. The legalists tend to be in positions of authority. They're different from the rank-n-file because they not only know about the rules and regs, but EAT IT UP as well. They LOVE the beaurocracy, the positions of authority, and the mindgames. They LOVE the system and all it's complicated ins-and-outs. They're like lawyers, concerned more with the language of the society's edicts than what the Bible actually says. I've also noticed that being the legalist type will fast-track one into the elder body. I think the GB members are the elite among the legalists. It explains why they hide so much in the name of "Jehovah's" reputation. Ray Franz unfortunately was an idealist and was pushed into the GB because of who his brother was. I was an idealist, but grew more and more fed up with how the Jehovah's Witnesses ran the religion like a business. I remember talking to someone's memorial guest and his comment was "wow, it looks more like a business meeting than a church meeting." I thought that was good at the time, but now I realize it isn't. Jesus wasn't a businessman.

My brother has rather severe ADHD but I think there's definitely more to it than that. The hampering of social skills is a fairly recent development. He wasn't always like that. I feel bad for him too, but at the same time frustrated because of all the times we've sat him down and told him that he is his own worst enemy in the dating world. It's not just in dating but life in general. He exhibits extremely poor judgement, being more likely to spend his last $5 on a movie rental while his cupboards remain barren. I think the problem there though is because he is very good at making people feel sorry for him and will bail him out. He has no problem begging people (even people poorer than he is) for food or money. He presents himself as just a poor guy down on his luck but the fact is that giving him food or money is just making you an enabler. He's seriously degenerating too.
Back when he was 18 and first moved out of the house, he kept his apartment sparkling clean. He had decent social skills and was even able to get and keep a steady girlfriend. Now he's at the point where he creeps out every single female in a 20 foot radius, I'm not joking. Seriously, I'm not. A sister that hadn't met him wanted to introduce him to some unattractive-and-desperately-single sisters in her old hall. Then, he came up to see us. I asked the sister afterwards if she still wanted to introduce him and she quickly shook her head and said "no way." It's really hard for me and by my post it looks like I'm being mean to him but I think it's just years of frustration trying to get through to him and me coming to the realization that he simply doesn't want to change. Me and my brothers will give him great advice and teach him some things, and he'll listen, but the next day he gets stubborn and reverts. I'm convinced that he is mentally unable to learn. -

This is how my older brother explained the trinity to me:
The Trinity is like a court. When you have a case in the supreme court for example, you address "the court." Now, the court is more than one person, but they all come together to make a decision. This is how the Trinity is. The Father is the head, but the Son and holy spirit are also part of the Godhead.
Personally, I am non-religious so I don't know if that's how the majority of Christians view the Trinity or if it's just another of my brother's crackpot ideas. -

Sexless Marriages Could Threre Be a Direct Link by Being Raised JW?
by okiesooner1966 ini would like start by saying i having been married twice.
the first time i married a girl who was also raised a jw, sex was great when we first got married but after a couple of years it almost completely stopped.

You may enjoy the sex, but the real question here is if she enjoys it.
