DOES ANYONE KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT MYELODYSPLASTIC SYNDROME?
by Mary ini just got some awful news.
my jw brother in law has been diagnosed with myelodysplastic syndrome.
needless to say, we are all extremely upset as it is a potentially life-threatening illness that can turn into leukemia.

Hi Mary,
I am very sorry to hear about your BIL's condition. It is always stressful to deal with a serious condition, but gaining information is very helpful in helping you and your family demystify the disease. I had two friends that were battling lymphoma at the same time, and they found the Lymphoma-Leukemia Society and National Cancer websites useful. I listed the links below referring to Myelodysplastic Syndrome on each of their sites:
http://www.cancer.gov/cancertopics/pdq/treatment/myelodysplastic
http://www.leukemia-lymphoma.org/all_page.adp?item_id=55442
I wish you and your family the very best, and pray for the very best outcome.

Should Christians carry guns?
by cameo-d indid jesus teach total pacificism?.
when the roman soldiers came for him in the garden, he instructed his disciples to put away their swords after one of them cut the ear of the high priest servant.. if this is true, can we not surmise that the disciples carried weapons?.
how should a non-violent person be prepared to defend himself in a situation of aggression and immediate physical threat?.

I never understood the rationale where a JW was looked down on and not given responsibility in the congregation if he worked as a police officer, but JW's (including elders) would have no problem calling the police in a situation where an officer might have to use a gun and take a life to protect the JW who called them. Being a police officer and a JW, I never could reconcile that...use me to protect you (maybe take a life for you) but not use me to "serve" you in the congregation. Strange...

Can't find info... Watchtower says it's written work is 'part of bible'
by mkr32208 inthere was a thread a few months back that contained a scan of (i think) the dec 15th watchtower where they said that the watchtower was to be considered part of the bible.
i really want to find that thread, i've been looking for hours i thought i had commented on it but it's not in my 'threads posted on' and i've been going through pages and pages and pages of threads and i've tried search but just can't find it.. .
does anyone who might have posted on that thread have a link to it?

Though at first read the statement in the WT sounds like it is implying that WTS teachings are part of the Bible, I think the context of this article is more in line with the compilation of the various early writers to form the Bible. As Blondie points out, there are other mroe damning statements to claim inspiration and inerrancy for the WTS teachings. Using the !2/15 WT statement could lead to a "gotcha moment" for a skilled JW apologist. My two cents...

What was the most profound spiritual moment of your life?
by cluless inmine was simply the realisation that if a person had faith they wouldnt need a religon.. infact not associating with any religouse association is a bit like being on the oceon in a rowing boat.
but the thing is i dont care if the oceon gets rough.
it doesnt matter not having the answers.

Why more women than men?
by Mickey mouse inwhy do you think more women than men are drawn to the borg?.
years ago women were more likely to be home during the day when the jw's came a-knocking but i doubt that's the case today.. my husband and i were discussing this and i said that i think more male converts would have an issue with the authoritarian structure of the organization than the female ones.
also, i think the impositions upon a person's sexuality are especially difficult for men.

I agree with primitivegenius...we can't ignore the fact that women outnumber men. Statistics generally follow patterns...population percentages will often mirror distribution percentages in sub-groups of that population. The Pew study showed that most religious denominations had more women than men, with the exception of Hindus, Atheists and Agnostics, where men were the majority. Considering Sweetpea's observations of the nurturing aspect of women's make-up and willingness to see the good, it is not difficult to understand the 60-40 ratio of women to men in the WTBS (which closely mirrors that of other denominations) versus the approximately 52-48 ratio of women to men worldwide.
The men that are attracted to the JW's as converts are often persons that are less than successful in their secular activities. They can live out their desires to be successful as a JW (becoming a MS, Elder or more) and establish a position of dominance. Since men tend towards that behavior, an organization with more women (especially those conditioned to be in subjection) can be a very attractive scenario. I realize that there are exceptions to this, but I believe that it is a common thread for male converts.
Just my two cents....

My son was baptized at 16 and stopped "associating" when he moved in with me at 18...he is now 27 and has not had one visit or call from an elder to find out what happened or why he isn't there. His grandparents have not called him in 10 years and his mother talks to him occasionally. My brother and his family are effectively shunning both of the kids though my son is "inactive" and not DF'ed or formally DA'ed. They are the only ones still "in". My daughter, 29, was never baptized. Isn't amazing how concerned the loving shepherds and their flock are? Maybe it is because of my kid's association with their "evil" father that they have been forgotten (thank goodness!!). BTW, in the 13 years since I was DF'ed, I have not had one follow up visit from an elder to see if I have changed my heart condition...someone must be asleep at the switch! LOL
