Oh let's see.........Yes I know a lot of Witnesses that are 'leeches' from my old Hall. Want some examples? First one is an elder. Collects a "Disability Pension" because his backs too sore for him to work. Funny thing is, he does all kinds of building 'on the side' that doesn't seem to hurt his back at all, plus he gets paid in cash so that he doesn't have to pay an tax on it. The other elders are fully aware of this, but seeing as most of them are also doing some pretty shady deals, they just look the other way. Another sister had to go to work for the first time in her life a few years ago. Decided she didn't want to work (cut into her social time with other Dubs) so she developed "Chronic Fatigue Syndrome" and now collects a Disability Pension. I hear she put her application in for pioneering in June.

I know of an elder too who claims disability benefits and pioneers, he also leads 3 midweek groups. He is the disability expert in his congregation and actively encourages and helps dubs claim disability benefits - after they have succeeded he helps them auxillary pioneer.

Also know a pioneer who is on benefits for her bad back, but she is able to hop in and out of her car (supplied by the government) climbs stairs etc.

very sorry about what happened to you on a daily basis - but you raise a valid point.

Take a look at this - mind you its from a clinical perspective of the law

a couple of weeks ago, i had a discussion with an elder's wife.

every now and then, they call on me with the literature.

they all know i'm ex-jw, but i'm nice, never da'd nor been df'd, and they think there's hope for me.

Before I became a witness I was a catholic but never cared about life after death, hellfire and yet after I'd become a JW i remember feeling very grateful whenever the wts reminded us (and they do that very often) of what we'd supposedly been freed from. Very cunning but successful propaganda on their part. I guess its a little like a strawman argument - another ploy they use a lot.

The thing is that in convincing individuals that the wts views are not bible based they may then find that most other christian views re life after death, hellfire etc don't have a solid basis. That can be very scary because they are faced with the question - is this life all there is?

What I personally like about this board is that all sorts of beliefs are discussed and there is no pressure to make one set absolute truth. However we get to see that life does go on and that it is better outside than in.

to deconstruct the jw rationale surrounding birthdays, a few simple guidelines should be followed.. (1): don't waste any energy trying to convince a jw that birthdays are not pagan, if they suggest that, readily agree.

whether or not the celebrations are pagan turns out to be a non-issue that distracts from the main point.. (2): stay focused on the fact that jws disfellowship people for celebrating birthdays.. (3): stress the point that there should always be clear scriptural reason for disfellowshipping someone.

ask them often throughout the discussion whether this is the case, get them to reinforce this need to themselves.. (4): remember, the first goal is deconstructing their rationale, not giving them a new rationale, not convincing them that celebrating birthdays is a good thing.. once you have these well in mind, the deconstruction can begin.. jw rationale, in brief:.

For the record, of course nobody is going to think to ask 'were you almost robbed tonight?', what I was feeling might be dishonest was that I got home a bit late, after talking to the police extensively; giving what description I could, relating the incident, etc. So I just said something about work taking longer than usual when she asked why I hadn't gotten home on time. True...to a point.

you must have had to call on all your acting skills there. Fortunately for you your wife is a little distracted at the moment.

Faith?

i think of you all allot for the helpful thoughts, and comments that you sent my way this past week.

i think one of my problems is that now that i don't have the routine of going to the meetings and feeling my head with the watchtower and awake, i seem to have little faith in anything now....i don't feel like i "know" god anymore.

every time i have gone to another church i just don't seem to fit in and feel "at home" like i used to at my old kingdom hall.

It's like Life has just shown it's self to me in the last 3 years by hitting me up side the face with a brink and saying: "LOOK! This is what life is like WAKE UP F##@er!!!"...and I struggle with weather or not I really want to face the "real world". I am always scared and immobilized by the events of the last few years since my "spiritual" breaking point? So how are you all doing, do most of you retain faith and if so how do you do it?

I can identify with you (((((core)))))). Its tough and horrible. I realised that part of it is the old jw record playing over and over again keeping my mind captive. To stop my thinking mind dead in its tracks I have found meditation helpful. 15-20 minutes a day of clearing my mind and concentrating on my breathing or on nature gives me the same connection with humanity that I got from praying. The most important effect though is that it helps stop that worn out old repetitious, disabling record.

Try it and see.
