in the uk you never hear words such as:.
railroad.
mortician.
cop=bobby
baby carriage=pram
hood of car=bonnet
trunk of car=boot
right on!=spot on!
keep your chin up=keep your pecker up
piece of cake=Bob's your uncle
woman dressed in clothing suitable for younger woman=mutton dressed as lamb
And a whole lot of crazy food names like bubble and squeak, bangers and mash, toad in the hole, spotty dick.
we visited angharad's parents at the weekend and got a call on sunday night from her sister who'd been called by my sister as they hadn't been able to contact us .... the message was not a happy one:.
my dad has had a heart attack and was in intensive care in hospital.. it was a while before i managed to speak to anyone over there with people probably out but i eventually spoke to his wife who says he's doing ok and has now been moved to the main ward but is being kept in as you would expect.
he may have to be moved to calgary for some investigation / tests.. he had heart surgery about 15 years ago and i think 4 of his 5 bypasses have failed so he has to take quite a bit of medicine for pain and stuff.
Simon,
I'm so sorry about your Dad. May he have a speedy recovery, and may you and your sissters sort everything out.

justice #22 need for mercy in place of rigid legalism.
intro: the account is mostly about two jw men, brother jay and elder dean.
but his two-week vacation pay was under $500.
Amazing,
What a moving story. Thank you for posting it. I missed your other stories, but will look for them. I'm always a little surprised when I read of the doubledealing by elders. I used to think they were above that, and it was only "sister-born-in-the-truth-special-pioneer" who would stick it to you. Thank you again for the insight.

Oooh, the Flamingo pink Paradise book. My parents had one in the house when I was a child. The pictures of people falling in ravines and all the fire and hail. Still scares me.
this reporter curiously had access to a number of jws.
jw himself???.
jehovah's witnesses reject many holidays and the notion that they are a dour group.
The holidays, they say, are not mentioned in the Bible and are not grounded in Christianity. People celebrate the holidays, they say, more out of a sense of tradition and sentimentality than to honor Jehovah, or God. (quote)
So whats wrong tradition and sentimental feelings?

ex-jw women: i, and i assume other ex-jw men, would enjoy hearing your views, opinions, feelings, analysis, and conclusions about your jw experience.
how did you feel about your husband, fathers, brothers, elders, ms's, and other women in the organizations?
did you generally feel oppression, and why?
(((to everyone)))
What moving experiences, some of them are so sad. It sounds like most of you have conquered your oppressors. My story is so boring in comparison. i never had a problem with the headship thing, or elders being superior, because for as long as I can remember, I felt women were inferior to men. I always wanted to be a boy, because that would have made my father happy. We weren't in the truth, he had a drinking problem, but when he was in a good mood, it was great. When I started to "develope" that's when all hell broke loose.
I've always had almost a fear of men in authority: cops, teachers, and yes, elders. But with that fear comes a later reaction, seething anger, resentment and stubbornness. I guess that's why I was so shaken by an elder that showed humility and compassion.
Lady Lee,
That sign language story was incredible! What must people in the real world think of this nonsense.
Someone else mentioned a sister putting a towel over her head to offer a prayer because of 6 or 7 year old boys being present. Guess I was never in the right place at the right time to see this bit of foolishness.
Thank you Amazing for starting this thread. I think I'm seeing things clearer everyday.

was in the middle of sending out some last minute "seasons greetings," cards.
any way, he spoke of the events of the last year, how they were significant, about the brothers going to the trade center and offering comfort from the scriptures, while priests and ministers only offered water and towels, and about the change in subscription arrangement.
THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU..TO ALL OF YOU. I feel like I've been counseled, but in good way! Very good points were made by everyone. I'm printing this all out to show to my husband and TRY to reason with him.
This is my first year of celebrating (kind of) that holiday that falls on December 25..I'm sure you all know the one I mean(smile.)
I don't know if my elder friend saw the tiny Norfolk Pine with garlands of rosebuds as decoration. If he did, he ignored it.
To all of you..HAPPY DECEMBER!!! and a wonderful 2002
Dear Amazing
I sent that message before any came in. I was stunned by the outpouring of concern and love. I'm printing out every answer I got to re-read and meditate on.

Hello Everyone,
Wow, what wonderful answers, I am truly appreciative for all the support, it wasn't what I expected. Thought I might get really lambasted for not standing up for myself, etc. That has always been a problem for me. Thank you all again, such good suggestions. Tonite I intend to sit down and formulate a plan on how to deal with this in the future. Again thanks so much. I know I have a lot of work to do.
