I think all the logical arguements and bible background and interpretations of whether the Canaanites deserved it or not mean nothing.
It's all about love.
Like cog says:

I think someone deeply in love can justify anything, and someone's love of God can go deeper than any other love. People still kill for God today.

Sorry to butt in, don't really have anything to add just wanted to mark the thread for future reference.

I'm really kind of appalled at how people can justify some of the things done in the OT. I suppose a lot of people have a real deep love for their God, and they do say love is blind.

I can't really get involved in this discussion as I don't have the eloquence of funkyderek and AlmostAtheist, but keep it up guys you're brilliant!

It's terrible really how JW kids suffer, thinking their 'worldy' classmates are going to be killed

some kids were picking on my brother and I for being witnesses. As we were so bravely running away (per my mother's strict orders "If you fight Jehovah will be angry and you won't be in paradise") I apparently turned around and hollered that God is going to kill them all for persecuting us.

but that's just brilliant!!!! serves the little buggers right for picking on you!

has anybody still got copies of the old "truth" book, the "live forever " book, and "bible teach" book?.

i threw them out, and regret it now because a sudden chilling realization came to me posting on another thread:.

do you remember how in the 70s we were told to encourage the new study to compare what the nwt says with what is in his own bible?

This takes me back to when I was a fresh new bible study. I was started on the Knowledge book.
I remember how they used to say how the NWT was so much better than the other translations, that historians and scholars prefer to use the NWT. I always preferred the poetic flowery language of my old King James to be honest, but I did as I was told and studied with the NWT, because it was a 'better' translation.

I thought every tiny thing coming from the Society sparkled like a diamond - it was so clearly Truth and nothin' but.(why couldn't EVERYone see that? lol) I thought I was smart to have chosen the 'correct' religion "...oh yes, you are really studying 'berean-style' and finding out The Truth for yourself! You are progressing nicely and so intelligent, why, you pick-up on these Truths right away!" Stroke, stroke and you have a new baptism candidate that's just swallowed all the lies without a burp! I can still barely believe I believed some of it - was not born into it - I chose it.

lol that's me, that's EXACTLY me! I can't believe I was so gullible.

you thought you could tell if you were being lied to.

yet, they got past your mental defenses and sucked you in.. knowing this, how can you be sure your current religious beliefs are true?.

oooh yes, thats me. I don't have the defense of being brought up in the 'truth', I was completely sucked in. It's scary now to think how easily my mind was taken over, and I did think I was smart to be honest.

Mental defenses are now firmly UP and staying like that. I still like studying the bible, strangely, but I know without a doubt that I will never be a Christian again.

Vinny, if these threads are a waste of time to read, why waste your time replying?

I'm a 'poor little atheist' and proud of it.

Thanks Lore, wow there really is nothing saying the people building the tower were evil. I vaguely remember my study on this and i asked what was so wrong with making the tower, they told me (don't know if this is official WT teachings or just these witnesses) that each level of the tower was dedicated to some sort of sin, getting worse and worse as you go upwards, levels dedicated to the worship of pagan gods, levels for indecent sex practises, baby eating etc.

Anyone else get told this, or is it just me?

i decided enough was enough and had a no holds barred conversation with a room of around a dozen 'believers'.

a number of things had been troubling me all night, but the final straw was when my brother-in-law said 'isn't it funny how the acronym std can stand for both, sexually transmitted disease and satan the devil.'.

i couldn't stand the frustration anymore so i pointed out how irrelevant that fact was, and how if we spoke a different language the same conclusion could probably not be made.

The whole universal sovereignity thing totally confused me when studying. I kept thinking Satan had a point and I felt really guilty for thinking it. I never dared say to my study conductors that I thought the tower of Babel incident was totally unfair, they said the people making it were really evil but I couldn't see where they got that from the bible.

My thoughts now: either the bible's not true and its all fairy tales like mincan says, or if the bible is true, then Satan is starting to look like the good guy in my opinion. Anyone else think this?

i met a witness in town that i know and she actually thought it was the law ie the police that cant do anything about child abuse unless there are 2 or 3 witnesses, how disturbing she is over 50 years old and that naive.
