this book openly invites pedophiles!

How do ex-JW's actually choose another religion?

ok, here's my question.

how do you go from being a jw to being a whatever (methodist, lutheran, etc.

) i've been invited to go to many churches with friends, but, i have no desire to ever set foot in any church.

Tinkerbell -- do a websearch on "Bible Gateway" -- you can look up every single Bible verse online.
Buffy -- First thing I did when seeking out another religion was demand low, low bullshit tolerance. Check out the Unitarian Universalists: about half of them are atheist/agnostic. They have wide-ranging Sunday School programs for children which cover all religions, not just Christianity. One of their main principles is: whatever doctrine you believe is your own business, and the church has no right to dictate to you. Ethics are more important than what name you call god. And dont worry about damnation -- that's the one reason you might want to hang with the UUs yourself: they're not called universalists for nothing. Anyhow, I think Utopian Reformist has it nailed.

The Hero with an African Face, Clyde W. Ford. The author is trained as both a chiropractor and psychiatrist, and wrote this book to remedy Joseph Campbell's inexplicable neglect of African mythology. There are some wonderful expressions of universal themes here.
The Gormenghast trilogy by Mervyn Peake. Now available in paperback again for the first time in about thirty years, ever since the gorgeous BBC miniseries last year. Which is now available on DVD and worth watching.

Oh God, I Hate That Tune.

last week, i was gurgling merrily at an episode of the simpsons.

it was the one that is a parody of the "thelma and louise" film where marge and her chum are being pursued by homer and chief wiggum.. marge's chum is trying to impress her with her cool music, but when she turns on the car radio, it begins to play one of her less cool tunes, something that i have never heard before called "sunshine and lollipops".

this repeated itself several times in different vehicles, whenever anyone turned on the radio, sunshine and lollipops came blaring out.

COMF, you're a man of excellent taste...oh, was I supposed to go there?

Um. I wasn't much into candy even before being diagnosed w/ diabetes at the end of July, but I did like the novelty value of those Droste (Tobler?) chocolate apples and oranges. My favorite, when I was a kid, was "Chunky" -- an undersized but very rich tidbit of chocolate crammed with cashews, raisins and maybe coconut. It costs as much as a full-sized bar and weighs only about half as much, but it's worth it, if you can find it.

And almost anything by Russell Stover. And Jelly Bellies (which are a high-quality jellybean, not jelly babies, which are akin to "Gummi Bears").

By sheer good luck, I just discovered a not-sucky brand of sugar-free chocolate: Elite, which comes in plain bars of milk or bittersweet chocolate. Give me a square of that and a few cashews and I'm happy. Can we get a website?

Oh my god. I didn't know there were sugar-free Jelly Bellies.

I agree, but I already have just about every good thing money can't buy. I'm one of those lucky people whose remaining problems can all be solved, or greatly improved, by money. Including – no, especially – medical problems. You try treating diabetes and tendonitis without access to a doctor!

Well, that's another rant for another day. If I had more money than I knew what to do with, I'd:

Buy really elaborate medical insurance.
Move out of this trailer into a nice big house, which, of course, I'd have to furnish from scratch. I'd buy furniture from the fine people at the Humboldt Woodworkers' Guild, for starters.
Possibly refurbish said trailer and give it to a homeless person.
Hm, while we're at it, make a ~~hobby~~ habit of buying good sound trailers and donating them to social service organizations, for homeless people "on the mend" to move into. Buy one every year or two, depending on the size of the bank balance.
And, hey, adopt one of those social service organizations and make sure it isn't hamstrung by poverty.
Fund my family's art projects, which are numerous and substantial.
Continue buying pretty toys, only on a much larger scale. So far I collect jewelery, books and music and carnival glass. I'd also like to collect majolica, fine writing instruments, pashmina shawls, and perhaps really really good cookware.
Every Christmas or friend's birthday, I'd go through my collection and give away really cool stuff that needed a new home.
Oh, yeah, and everything everybody else suggested. Or subsidize other people's dreams.
Make sure my sister gets a big wad of cash when I die. And some antiques. Lalique, anyone?

Chocolat the movie is all right, but the book it's based on is far better; far more honest about fear, loss, and death, and the power and limitations of magic. Was obviously written by someone with a working knowledge of modern Western witchcraft. I enjoyed it much more than the movie.

I got into Tarot three or four years ago; spent enough time on it to get pretty familiar with the symbolism. I got to where I could draw a single card in the morning and get a rough idea of how my day would go.

Finally gave up on it when I realized that, when I did a full reading, the deck never told me anything but what I wanted to hear. Even when other people were reading for me.
