  GROWING UP AS AN EIGHTIES WITNESS

  i was my nephews birthday party tonight.

  my sister (who i didnt speak to for 15 years because she was dffd was the hostess).. all was well, and we got to talking about growing up as a kid in the truth.

  my mum was there and i admoitted to thinking from as early as i could remember till i was about 20 the "the end" was coming any minute.

  they could not undo the message I was getting at home and in my associating with the Witness people.

  Although I was not raised a Witness, I had to cast back many years to remember a time when I did not believe the world would end.

  First time I ran across an end-of-the-world prediction was at age 11 or 12, I think. I was reading a Tintin book, the one about the asteroid, when an eccentric astronomer predicts "the end of the world!" will result when the asteroid crashes.

  And I remember thinking: "That's silly."

  Seven or eight years later I was a jaydub and expecting the world to end any day.

  I'm in my forties now. I've been a worldling again for another eight years and I'm still half-convinced the human race will destroy itself, soon, from sheer cussedness.

  How the hell do I get rid of this thing?

  Anyone ever been to a Marylin Manson concert???????

  i ask because i'm taking my 19 y/o son to a concert he's doing in sydney, australia.. i'm not going to the concert, i'll be spending time with friends shopping and dining out.

  but i was just wondering what my son can expect from a mm concert.

  My daughter's leery of spiders now "because they appear out of nowhere," but when she was a little girl they were her favorite animal, just about.

  Once during a CO visit all the little kids were called up on stage to tell the congregation what they wanted to thank Jehovah for. (We parents got advance notice so we could drill the kids.) Well, after the tenth or twelfth "I thank Jehovah for food...and water...and mommy and daddy" it began to get a little samey.

  So the CO gets to my daughter: "And what do you thank Jehovah for?"

  "Spiders," she answered, which brought down the house.

  But afterwards, she was crestfallen and downcast. Why?

  "I meant to say tarantulas!" she said.

  Author Ben G. Hester was originally convinced that dowsing was simply a "not-yet-understood physical phenomenon." But after eight years of investigating the subject, he wrote the book Dowsing—an Exposé of Hidden Occult Forces.

  Some quotes from his book (this is a Seventh-Day Adventist site):

  Admittedly, all dowsing reports are open to repudiation by...the individuals who will accept NOTHING not provable by the scientific methods.

  The three of us are Christians. We belong to different denominations. … It happens that the three of us see eye-to-eye on the supernatural, believing that there is a malevolent intelligent entity-leader known as Satan…

  CHAPTER IV
  "FOR CHRISTIANS ONLY" as a courtesy to the non-Christian who wishes to avoid the conservative Christian interpretation of dowsing and the power source behind it. This viewpoint is offered without apology since it is reasonably the best explanation of dowsing, by comparison, so far.

  In other words: the WTS once again quotes Babylon the Great as an authority.

  Dowser Robert H. Leftwich wrote in his book Dowsing—The Ancient Art of Rhabdomancy:

  Can’t find any quotes from this one, but it’s a little bitty how-to book from 1976.

  Once again, the WTS dresses up "sliders" as solid spiritual food for deep thinkers.

  Where do you believe the watchtower organization will be in 20 years?

  Pentecostalism is where it's at now.

  Yes, but according to www.barna.org, Pentecostals amount to only 2% of the US population. Conservative churches are growing, because church-going adults tend to be conservatives who don't want to experiment; but in a given week, only 40% of American adults attend any kind of church, and this includes everybody from Catholics to Unitarians.

  i was reading a book on celtic beliefs.

  and as the western beliefs have the zodiac; and the asians have the 12 animals who came to buddha, so the celts believe different trees represent basic characteristics in humans.. so ok which kind of tree would you be ?

  the landlords took the biggest pieces of the pie and often preferred the protitutes who could pay their rent as opposed to poor working men who couldn't.

  gilfoyle describes the impact of prostitution on police, politicians, moralists, and the middle class.prostitution functioned at the nexus of social relations in the nineteenth century city.

  to believe in christ, the jews asked for a powerful sign, before they would believe.. to believe in christ, the greeks appealed to logic and wisdom, before they would believe.. to believe in christ, the christians simply believed, and treated it as a personal calling.. which category do you believe you fall into 1, 2 or 3?.

  but which of the first three categories do you also fall under?

  I act like a "Christian" (without Jesus) - because my gods have told me that historicity and provability are irrelevant. But my personal belief is based on personal experience, which is a kind of "sign", isn't it? So does that make me a "Jew" also? And now I'm trying to make logical sense of it, so am I now "Greek"?
