How Would a JW Answer This Question? Opinions, Please.
by GoddessRachel ini was thinking to myself this morning and came up with this question:.
if jehovah god is so merciful, why would he punish his people because of apostates?.
my thought process was that the end hasn't come because it is some kind of a test to see how faithful his people can be.

Hi GoddessRachel,
"If Jehovah God is so merciful, why would He punish his people because of apostates?"
I believe this
Hebrews 10:28-30 (New International Version)
28 Anyone who rejected the law of Moses died without mercy on the testimony of two or three witnesses. 29 How much more severely do you think a man deserves to be punished who has trampled the Son of God under foot, who has treated as an unholy thing the blood of the covenant that sanctified him, and who has insulted the Spirit of grace? 30 For we know him who said, "It is mine to avenge; I will repay,"[a] and again, "The Lord will judge his people."[b]
The WTO has trampled Jesus under foot with their doctrine to demote Him, deny the cross, stop people from being born again and participating in the new covenant. The biggest symbol of this is when the bread and wine gets passed round and no-one partakes.
Matthew 26 (New International Version)
26 While they were eating, Jesus took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, "Take and eat; this is my body."
27 Then he took the cup, gave thanks and offered it to them, saying, "Drink from it, all of you. 28 This is my blood of the[b] covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.
So to sum up, heaven rejoices when people become JW apostates and believe His word at face value.
All the best,

"Other than his occasional spooky laughter, I don't find that video much more disturbing than one that might be made by a zealot from any other religion."
Ah, I noticed that too! Spooky for sure like a crazy man after world domination on a James Bond film.
I also felt that I was watching one of his own films. Either in real life he wears a persona like his acting style or the other way round? Either way I didn't feel much reality there.

No need, the words are enough! The opening sentence is prefect.
"some thing that you have to earn"
Yes all these cults and "religions" are the same, you have to earn it.
The only faith which is a free gift and no amount of 'earning' gets it is being born again.
But like all gifts you have to take it.

Where is God when it hurts?

although the story at many points tears at your heart, tj's post is an exceptionally well-written story of his life growing up as a witness.

Hi Satanus,
"Can you put that in your own words. The bible has been enterpreted ad nauseum and used for all kinds of crap. Your words, please. "
I agree, people have used the Bible and God's name for the good, the bad and the ugly! You will recognise some of my beliefs below because they are not only mine but those of other like minded believers too. Ultimately, I believe it is God's words that are important, not mine but I understand how it is difficult for ex JWs and similar cults which purport to follow the Bible without putting up defenses. Also, if we can't speak what we believe in our own words from our own heart and mind then it doesn't say very much for our faith does it?
OK those verses from 2 Peter paraphrased and explained in my own words.
Well with God time is immaterial (He created it and exists equally at all times). That also explains why He is not slow at keeping His promise because it relates to our limited view of time.
However, God is just and will keep His promise (in fact all of them). He is very patient with us and He does not want to judge us guilty of our wrong doings, as He is pure love but wants us to recognise them and say we are truly sorry.
Don't put it off forever getting right with God because the option will not be there indefinitely and God is not only love but also just and true.
This world will not last forever as it is and one day we all will have to account for every aspect of our lives before Almighty God. Excuses and tears won't help but knowing Jesus (and Him knowing you) will.
All the best,

Hi,
I have just been reading this-think it explains some question in this thread.
2 Peter 3:8-10 (New International Version)
8 But do not forget this one thing, dear friends: With the Lord a day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like a day. 9 The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. He is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.
10 But the day of the Lord will come like a thief. The heavens will disappear with a roar; the elements will be destroyed by fire, and the earth and everything in it will be laid bare.
The key here is not the "destroyed by fire" (which is not a reference to Armageddon BTW) but "laid bare" i.e. everything will be seen for what it is
John 3:20
Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that his deeds will be exposed.
Psalm 37 explain some of the same and more

Hi R.Crusoe,
Thanks for the post.
"God is in everyone!"
I beg to differ. Consider these this verse.
Romans 8:9 (New International Version)
You, however, are controlled not by the sinful nature but by the Spirit, if the Spirit of God lives in you. And if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Christ.
So both sentences as "if" and are conditional. I believe the Bible and it says if you have faith in Christ, He will live in you i.e. The Spirit of God/Christ.
BTW we have the Trinity in this one verse, Father, Christ and the Holy Spirit, one and the same.

Stephen
