Film "Worlds Apart," screened in NYC - GO SEE IT
by NYCkid inhello, just want to highly recommend the danish film, "worlds apart" now being screend at the tribeca film festival in new york.
the acting is superb and the filmakers represent the witnesses accurately (to the "t") withoug making them appear fanatic.
after all, these are people sincere in their beliefs no matter how absurd.

You can email the film trailer to others. I just emailed it to a couple of relatives who sometimes fail to realize this is a cult. Maybe they will watch it and understand a bit better how much 'fun' I had growing up.
I think it will be painful to watch it, but I will. It does look like a very good film. Thank you, NYCkid!

My parents really bought into this stuff and converted in the early 1970's.
I'm truly astonished to see that they continue to believe they have "the truth," as they age and still think maybe they won't have to die.
All these years, predicting "the end times," and there they are, growing old . . . and they thought they never would.

Public Acceptance of Evolution --- A Comparative Study
by hamilcarr inhere's an illuminating graph showing the acceptance of evolution in different industrialized societies, from a science article by miller, scott and okamoto (2006).
as you can see, only turkey has a lower acceptance than the us.
the participants were asked to assess the following statement: "human beings, as we know them, developed from earlier species of animals".

Now I really can believe the statistic I came across the other day that stated there are over 3000 religious cults in the US alone. What a fertile place for superstitious nonsense when such a large percentage of the population thinks evolution is not a reality.

Awww! HB! I hope the worst is over for you. Be as well as you can be. So sorry about your ordeal. And yeah, you're right - you are definitely not allowed to sleep in the hospital, heh! I know you're glad to be back home, huh? Good luck!

YOUR DAILY JOURNAL
by compound complex indear friends,.
much of what we do on a daily basis is routine and of no particular, earth-shaking importance.
however, after reviewing letters of family going back to wwii, it is fascinating to read what dad was doing on board the aircraft carrier in the pacific on any old day, what mom was cooking on her ever-steaming range, how i was dealing with the roller coaster of emotion at bethel [mom saved all my letters], how nana wrote that she would not study with the witnesses [per my request] but 'here are some mittens i knitted for you when you canvass new york with your magazines.

Well, I was up all night last night; spent a good deal of time working on my 1040X (tax re-do for 2006). The good news is the IRS owes me some money.
The bad news is they think I owe it to them . . . so I have to keep paying up (and getting stuck with enormous penalties for late filing while they take their sweet time researching and processing my paperwork).
I fully expect to lose all the refund due me this year because they haven't got the info yet about last year. I just know it's going to turn into a long, drawn-out mess.
I was counting on getting the refund this week and using it to pay the rent, new car insurance, etc. I feel so screwwed. arrrghhh!
My daughter just got her license and is going away.
I threw a going away party and 2 people showed up because she failed to invite everyone. I spent a fortune on food and snacks. I'm not holding it against her though, LOL, because now I've got a mountain of junk food and we actually had a great time bowling anyway!

I think they're all actors, don't you? I can't imagine anyone doing that stuff for real and not getting an ass-kicking.

Depression-pain or do I love it?

Depression creates and follows "pathways" in our brains; finding, creating, using new pathways is a challenge that requires incredible mindfulness. Noticing when one has begun the downward spiral into negativity and catching it short is difficult; it does not mean you love the pain. It is just a familiar pathway . . .
