i have lurked now and then, just decided to join.. my older brother and i were raised by our jw mom, but our dad was a non-practicing catholic.
so we went to the hall, but were considered "weak" witnesses, since our family still celebrated xmas and birthdays, to appease my dad i suppose.
as a kid, i loved these holidays.. anyways, when my brother was 17 (i was 13), he spent a few weeks with our cousins in ky, who are all gung-ho j-dubs, and upon his return, he decided he was going to be more "theocratic".
Welcome Jay Dubless. I used to be from SE Michigan too. Redford if you know where that is but we were not dubs at the time. That didn't come til we moved away from family and friends in '76 for work reasons. We were a bit lonely, vulnerable and got sucked in just as Steve Hassan describes. Free now though and lovin it.
You seem to be handling the loss of a relationship with your brother realistically. I hope better days lie ahead.

as most know, it's that time of the year when the jws go out 'in force' and bang on doors trying to leave their litter-ature for the memorial - aka 'memorial invite'.. this morning (saturday), i was at the local coffee shop - which is normal for me.
my wife was at home chilling on the sofa, in her nightie.. i got a text message around 9:30-ish saying that jws had been at our house.. when i got home, my wife said she was sitting on the sofa when she heard a light 'tap tap' on the door.
we have a doorbell.
I didn't get an invite yet. They have been coming once a year since we left 4 years ago. Last year we didn't answer. If they're going to come today would be the day. I ran into a couple yesterday, Saturday. We were pseudo friends with them over the years. We were on a walk at a popular location in my area and my husband had dropped off behind me to use the restroom while I kept walking. They had to have seen me first as they were nonchalontly turning toward the parking lot. I called out loudly and cheerfully: Hello-o-o 'Sally and Norman'. She turned to look at him to avoid me while he casually turned around and said "Hello, How are you?" I kept up my pace because I just wanted to say Hi and replied "Good, How are you guys". But no answer and I was continuing my stride.
So I'm wondering if my friendly gesture will induce a visit. I hope we can get out of here soon. We have plans to meet our son, dil, and grand child for a special occasion. They are missing the meeting for our rendezvous. yay.
i have been wandering around the board for a while now, and have decided it is time to contribute a bit of my history.

i got a interview for today a few days ago.
the interview is for orkin, a pest control company.
i haven't had a interview in a while and hopefully i don't get nervous.
What are your weaknesses? Say: I care too much and sometimes get taken advantage of. (just a thought)
When I got my first part time job in high school. One of my teachers said to be confident. When the interviewer comes in smile and shake his hand.
When I got the job (at a shoe store) my boss told me later I got the job because when he walked in I stood up, smiled and shook his hand.
