Wedding Talks

a few weeks ago, there was a thread started on jw funeral talks and how horrible they are, but what about those wedding talks?.

talks that has nothing to do with the couple itself, but an advertisement about how wonderful marriage in jehovahs organization is.

*eye roll * the worst is when they have to bring up sex in the marriage in a wedding talk *barf*.

Talks that has nothing to do with the couple itself, but an advertisement about how wonderful marriage in Jehovah’s organization is. *eye roll * The worst is when they have to bring up sex in the marriage in a wedding talk *barf*. Imagine all of your non JW friends, co-workers, and family who is coming to see you get married get lectured as to how to have sex in your marriage.

I also disliked how I couldn’t invite who I wanted to the wedding. I mean, its open for anyone to show up regardless if I wanted them there or not. Receptions, I know are different

The SHOW must go on!!!

i remember when i was a kid in "the truth.

there was an elderly sister that had a heart attack during the meeting.

she made loud gasping sounds as she was holding on for dear life.

When I was in PS, an older brother I grew to have affection for during the first week (he was like a grandfather to me) started to silently choke on a piece of candy. Since I was sitting next to him, I was the only one who noticed that he was gasping for air. I called his name loudly and the other people noticed and responded quickly giving him the Heimlich maneuver and dislodging the candy. As soon as he left by ambiance, we went right back to the PS even though I was visibly shaken up and crying over the experience. I walked out and went home for the day.

little WT extras

you know whats always bothered me intensely?

.. when witnesses (esp.

pioneers) have all the little wt extras, such as the wt year agenda, the wt removable book covers, bible with their name printed on the leather cover, the rv book with the little tower logo on it, "pens from patterson" etc.

LOL, I had none of that stuff. For a long time I didn't even own a book bag. At first I used to go out in service with just a Bible, I figured that was all I needed. I thought I was cool being able to reason from the scriptures only. But I was quickly reprimanded by the self-righteous elders--that I needed to have a book-bag and carry around all the WT crap,

LOL! My ex-husband used to do that too. Go to the doors with just a bible. The elders put an end to that too though.

My favorites:

Highlighters – yellow, pink, blue and orange was my favorite. I think it scored extra points when trying to attract guys when visiting other halls in my teens.

The little metal tin to hold the non-at-home slips and tracks (easy to write on while standing up)

I preferred my own (fashionable) book bag. The homemade ones looked too generic to me.

To Be Or Not To Be?

if you were raised a jehovah's witness ... would it be better to:.

1. stay in the organization and continue to be controlled.

the years will be spent earning your salvation into "paradise earth" without cease.

Cons of staying in:

-Become an alcoholic
-Never marry again (at the age of 29) since I divorced my ex husband who “only” physically abused me, not commit adultery.
-Never have real friends because BORG friendship is conditional
-Never have free Saturdays and weeknights
-Of course, the list can go on for most of us!

"Being allowed to drink is the only fun thing witnesses are allowed to do. They use it to cope with all that's been taken away and they use drinking to have fun. I've been to some great parties at elder's houses! Getting drunk was not a problem in my congregation. But you'd better be careful about everything else because they would gladly follow you around town to get evidence for a good ole committee meeting."

Okay! Those parties were a hit. I seen more beer, wine and sprits at JW parties (more elders, the better because you can always say "bro. PO was there!") than at some "wordly" gatherings I've been at. Just be fresh as a daisy for the 9:30 PT the next morning.

Unrealized hopes and dreams - crappy reality of life

i am thankful to jehovah's witnesses who taught me the bible.

i still believe it is the word of god.

i have studied other spiritual traditions and have compared different teachings and haven't found one that gives such a positive outlook on the future.

The Watchtower thinking process is very damaging; constant negative thinking in order to build up desire for the future paradise. I too have struggled with depression, and have to wonder if it was exacerbated by being raised a JW.

I agree. For me, it’s hard to come to terms with death and what it really is. Growing up thinking that all of the people in my life I lost will return to the Earth in the flesh really did a number to me. Now I’m soooo pissed off when I see the “When Someone you Love Dies” publications around, especially at makeshift shrines when someone is killed or handed out after JW memorials.

I cry silently when my mother tells me about the hope of paradise or seeing her loved ones again. This is all she has and it pisses me off to no end.

in the appendix of the new "keep yourselves in god's love"-book i found the following statements regarding contact to ex-jw-family members:.

what if a relative is disfellowshipped?

in such a case, the close bond between family members can pose a real test of loyalty.

"This certainly wasn't followed in my case. For 7 years elders in the 2 congregations that I attended simply encouraged me to be a better wife. I have read of many other cases where abused women were treated he same way." I was treated the same way. I was not believed when I told them my ex-husband was physically abusive to the point of trying to strangle me in my sleep once. Unfortunately I know of another case like this where it cost a young woman and her child their lives. :(

My memory of the 1975 fiasco (born in 1970)

drew sagan posted this fine thread http://www.jehovahs-witness.com/12/160876/1.ashx in which a few people remarked that hardly anyone under the age of 40 even knows about the 1975 failed prediction.. i was born in 1970 and i do remember the 1975 fiasco.

for what it's worth, here are my memories and how it was explained to me.. late in 1968 my parents decided to have me because, like many other jws, they thought that i would never have to deal with the world or go to school.

they carefully planned to have me during the year of 1970 because they didn't want to go through armagedon with an infant, so they figured if i was 5 years old, i would be old enough to run, feed myself, and at least know enough to take shelter from the elements or hide.

My mother didn't know much about 1975 since she was baptized in 1976 (not sure how long she studied). Since I was born in 1978 the first I heard about "1975" was a DC probably in the early '90s. The speaker was basically doing what the OP said the BORG did/does: blame the people for not putting their faith and trust in Jeh, getting into debt and speculating about when the end would come. Of couse, having not lived through that time period, I believed them. I'm glad there are people here who lived through that, remembers what really happened and can set the record straight.

I have known of people proudly proclaim that they are JW, yet they haven’t stepped foot into a KH since the Regan Administration. It’s not like the WTBTS is going to DF them if they are not even seen near a KH.

No Emotion at Funerals

i was a chaperone for my daughter's out-of-town volleyball tournament last weekend - got to meet another mom that had grown up in the same area i grew up in.

she proceeded to ask about my childhood, etc.

and i had to spill the beans on my jw background (i usually keep this to myself!

I’ve been to a few JW “memorials” where close friends and family members cried, but not out loud. Other times, I see people fight back tears. No one else cried except me even at the unexpected deaths. I went to funerals where a young left young children behind didn’t have anyone console them at the funeral – her husband was now twice a widower in his early 30s; a mother who lost her son very suddenly; a young family man who was killed in a robbery attempt and so on. No emotion, no tears, no sadness. Sad.
