i'm not very craftsy, but i have a thing about crocheting dishcloths.
it's a basket-weave design and i have mentioned in the past how it helps me to keep sane.
i have been suicidal lately and thought, why not send these dishcloths out to my friends and they will always have a little piece of me to be remembered by.
I echo what everyone else (and you) have already said. That 2x2 mesh of yarn (or something) is TIME and LOVE, and therefore precious. Coming out of the bOrg, hopefully we can more easily ignore the pagan/christian/commercialism issues and think about what christmas is really about.
I think a hand-crocheted dishclothe would be great... I could put it on my lap so the new laptop that Teejay and Vivamus are going halfsies on doesn't burn my naughty bits!!!

i really like this girl who ive been told is a jw.
im not sure about jw's and their beleifs of dating so i have a few questions.. 1) are jw's allowed to date outside their religion?.
2) what are jw's beleifs on pre-marital sex?.
Even if you beat the odds and marry this girl, her religion won't allow her to find out just how 'delicious' you are. (Translation: No oral sex. Ever.)

I was very disappointed.
Some of my favorite parts:
The whole dune buggy thing
They show a picture of Picard as a youngster... and he's bald! (Other shows have pictured him as a young man with a full head of hair.)
Worf had two lines in the movie... both of them bad;
Wesley Crusher had no lines;
Shinzon (the bad guy) is being chased in a space battle. He tells his helm dude to reroute all power to the forward disruptors and prepare for a full stop. Nobody has a clue what he has in mind and he has to--in typical villain fashion--repeat his command in a menacing tone. Just when his clueless crew is about to mutiny because they think he's gone off his rocker letting the pursuers catch him, he yells "Full Stop!" and "Fire!" as the 'good' guys race right past him and he shoots them in the ass. Sheesh, hasn't anybody in the future seen Top Gun?
This is reportedly the last ST:TNG film, so at least I won't have to watch Marina Sirtis look like she's cramping when she says, "I sense he's holding something back."
I have other nit-picks, but they would expose me as a geek of daunting proportions (do you really want to know where the command bridge of a starship is located?) so I'll leave off.

someone, i believe it may have been farkel, suggested that there are no more meaty doctrinal issues to be discussed on this board.
that being the case, i would like to solicit the help of the more capable posters on something that could be of tremendous help to, not just myself, but perhaps other lurkers as well.. the requirement is for someone like myself who is still actively attending only because of a close family member or friend who is still in.
assuming that individual, like many jdubs, has a couple of nagging doubts, there is a need to introduce the real truth about the truth.
I am squarely in the "no matter how compelling your argument, they won't listen until they're ready" camp.
I think that an email or letter that starts off innocently, then sneaks in a minor doctrinal issue will remind JWs too much of a Theocratic Ministry School talk or Service Meeting demonstration. They are taught to turn any conversation to 'spiritual matters,' and they'll see when it's being done to them. Couple that with the hypersensitivity to criticism of the bOrg that's been drilled into them since day one, and I think chances are close to nil that they would get past the first paragraph.
Of course, I'm not saying that you shouldn't present appropriate information to your friends and loved ones; just don't expect them to have a Road To Damascus experience. There is enough damning evidence available to "thinking JWs"... it'll be there for them when they're finally ready to listen.

If they have, say, 1,000 spare 1954 bound volumes hanging around, is that spiritual banquet available only 1,000 times? Or is it valuable enough that they would go through the cost of a reprint to lovingly provide this proper food [a half-century late] if 2,000 publishers ordered it?

I was thinking the same thing just the other day. I remember my own Internet-Dub days spent defending WT doctrine against atheists, evangelicals, and slathering apostates. I think those days are pretty much gone.
Today's JW apologist is much more likely to be a Fred Hall, who would sooner call you an 'asshole' than offer up a cogent defense of a specific WT teaching; or a pseudo-JW troll like comforter/dunscott; or a nutcase like YouKnow, whose sole delvings into WT dogma are his own going-ahead-of-the-chariot delusions.
JW 'fellowship' boards have the same atmosphere as a Kingdom Hall during the COs visit; everyone is focused on being "encouraging" to one another, with no true spiritual discussions allowed beyond quoting what was in the latest Watchtower study.
I think you summed it up very well, Metatron: The old-timers are silently hoping against hope that their secret doubts will prove groundless, and the younger JWs aren't interested enough to even stay up on current doctrine, let alone examine/debate it.
It's a little like the plot to "All quiet On the Western Front" in which the main
character gets shot after an armistice is signed ........

of course, you'll know what the real reason is for this.
The "monetary aid" phrase caught my eye, as well. It seems like they're saying they'll lend you the money, not return it to you. That would make this more of an open-ended loan to the WTS, with no interest and no pay-back period.
What's worse, I wonder if you would have to prove that you 'needed' rather than just 'wanted' the money back. This would prevent DA/DF or otherwise disgruntled people from having their money returned.
Whatever the case, it seems clear that this is an empty option. They seem to hope that the promise of getting the money returned will open up the purse strings of the R&F--when the society knows full well that 99.99% of their members would NEVER ask for the money back for any reason (a la Cruzanheart's father's experience).
