What does one need to interpret the Bible?
by insearchoftruth ini have posted some thoughts on this on earlier threads, but the pesky jws have approached my wife about a bible study again, but my wife has let them know that this time she wants to learn how to read the bible and then after she is able to do that, she may consider some of the other books.
i have a couple of concerns about this, firstly, from what i know, the jws consider reading thier literature on a par with reading the bible, in fact i am pretty sure that they will try to lead her back to the bible teach book and let her know that she is in essence getting the same 'food' this way as she would another way.. secondly, if she decides to study the bible, the questions from readers that has recently come out all but prohibiting independent bible study will most likely come into play.
witnessgirl provided a good course on this, let my wife know that we are going to read the bible, not study, which could be a loophole (but i doubt if she asks a jw about that they would see a difference, but my stubborn wife may), but i think my wife would say she wants to study, not read....... a pesky jw provided her with her copy of the insight books and she also has the reasoning book, but i want her to actually feel she can read the bible and take from it what the literature presents in itself, not the slant that any organization or person wants her to take from it, even though if she reads the nwt version (or really any version for that matter) there is already a man provided slant.

Need help responding to a pioneer
by megs ini posed the question to a pioneer who had been giving me bible studies.
my question was quite simple: "in john 3:16, doesn't it say that whosoever believeth in him will have eternal life?
my understanding of this scripture is that eternal life is given to all who believe in christ and believe he died to save sinners.

I am Agnostic. What happened??
by horrible life ini have had a continuing saga of a 25 year friendship, gone terribly wrong.
bitterness is very high, on both of our parts.
every-time i think things have calmed down, and we are dead to each other, something else is said on her part.

Iran vs. Israel - could it be the beginning of Armageddon?
by tartarus ini have recently read in the news that an attack on iran is planned sometime after the olympics in beijing.
here's a bit of background to it:.
when irans fledgling democracy was overthrown with support of cia the shah of iran was giving israel free oil thru a pipeline that still runs thru saudi arabia to a refinery in the israeli city of haifa.

Saul and David: Two Concurrent "Annointed" Channels
by Justitia Themis inthis is an excerpt from a jw email that was posted in another thread:.
i believe it is completely inappropriate for a christian to go against what the fds says, because they are the anointed of jehovah.
king saul here, he was evil, he was a person who was detestable in the eyes of god, yet, as a faithful servant of god, david did not dare thrust his hand against jehovah's anointed.

Unrealized hopes and dreams - crappy reality of life
by tartarus ini am thankful to jehovah's witnesses who taught me the bible.
i still believe it is the word of god.
i have studied other spiritual traditions and have compared different teachings and haven't found one that gives such a positive outlook on the future.

why i disbelieve
by inkling inthe following is a response to a jw friend who still occasionally tries to save my soul, or at least understand it.. his questions are in italics.. i have not yet sent this email.. ========================= what exactly is it that makes you disbelieve there's a god, or makes you unsure he exists?
i think a more sensical question is what makes you so sure he does?
when debating the existence of something invisible, the burden ofproof rests solidly on the shoulders of the believer.

The true religion?
by John Doe ini was just glancing through the official website, and had an interesting thought.
i know this is not original, but it struck me.
let's begin with this quote, right off the link on their main site: .

You know, I've yet to meet a JW who can explain this
by Lady Zombie ini know that has probably been covered ad infinitum on jwd.
so...... if jehovah is omnipotent, then there is nothing he can't do and nothing he doesn't know.. and, according to jws (as well as most other religions), god is love.
therefore he had to have known, even before creating all of creation, what would happen.

Convictions or Reasons - which come first?
by nicolaou init's obvious right?
your convictions are supported by and dependant upon your reasoning and evidence.
what kind of person would choose a conviction first and then hunt around for evidence to support it, all the time ignoring any sound refutation and evidence which countered their cherished belief?.
