The upside of atheism
by paul from cleveland ini realize whether you believe in god or the non-existence of god it has to be taken on faith since both positions are unknowable and unprovable.
however, i can understand faith in god as basically a hope for something better.
i can also understand agnosticism; admitting it's unknowable but still leaving the door open (perhaps the only intellectually honest option).

Confessed my Doubts to my Wife
by cantleave inwell - i today i had the opportunity to tell my wife i no longer believe in the things that i have spent my life immersed in and that i didn't want my life run by 9 geriatrics in brooklyn.. her reaction was understandable her first questions was "what have you been reading"?.
i didn't mention this site but told her i was shocked by something i heard regarding the wts's ngo status with the un, dissapointed by the new light on the generation and disturbed by the flip flopping on blood fractions.
i explained how these things were at best hypocritical and at worst have meant some people have lost their lives unnecessarily because of the societies previous position.

Sounds like you're better off than most people in your situation.
Just remember, you're fishing with a 1 pound line. You have to have very, very light touch or you'll snap it.You might want to wait until she brings up the subject again. Let her think about it some and make the next move.

Are You Still Thrilled With President Obama?
by minimus inhis motto is "yes we can!
" has he done what you expected?
any concerns?

Did anyone really think he was the Messiah?
Yes, quite a few people did, and many still do. That's why the phrase "The Lord Messiah Obama (or just LM Obma) is common in some conservative circles.
He's on a learning curve, but at least he has ideas.
Just what we need, a presidency with training wheels. And few things are dangerous as bad ideas.
I think Obama's true colors are shining through. He's a socialist.
Unquestionably. Anyone who says otherwise is either deeply dishonest or profoundly stupid.
*merica isn't quite ready for a black man as president.
Jesus H. Tapdancing Christ. Where would the left be without the bogus bitch about racism. Anytime anyone says anything against LMO some idiot slaps down the race card. When that happens we can immediately subtract 20 points from our original guess of their IQ. -

The Grieving Process after Leaving the Cult
by cantleave ini really want my wife to see that we have spent our wholes lives in a lie, a lie promoted by mind controlling cult, but i have a problem and this is it........ my wife was extremely close to her grandmother, she lived with her in her teens and loved her to bits.
when her grandmother died, 5 years ago, my wife was devestated, the only thing that allowed her to combat the grief was the hope of the ressurection, being able to see her grandmother again in the new system.. it is in my opinion, this hope that keeps her going in the "truth".
if the she leaves the truth i am sure, that like me she will not fall back on any other religion, she will probably become more humanist and agnostic if not atheist.. this realisation will mean that she will never see her grandmother again.

My mom died while I was in the process of escaping. I'd love to see her again.
I never will. That sucks, but its reality. Sometimes reality sucks.
My father is still alive. I think I've spoken to him for a total of about 30 minutes in the past thirty years. It sounds cruel to say it, but he might as well be dead.
Most religions teach we'll be reunited with loved ones sometimes in the future. You don't have to stick with a destructive cult to hang on to that hope. -

What can be done about those who go berserk with a gun?
by badboy ini don't really understand the phenonoma.. .

The USA currently has more firearms related deaths per person than any other developed country.
I love that phrase. It sounds so impressive.
Of course, half those deaths are suicides, and it's already been pointed out that most of the rest of them are drug related.
Man's home gets broken into, cops don't do crap, he protects his family, he gets fined.
Could be worse – it could be the UK. If you defend yourself with a gun in England, you can expect to spend more time in prison than your attacker.
In an international league table of murders with firearms per capita the UK is ranked 32nd with a score of 0.00102579 per 1,000 people. Right down there with New Zealand etc.
Once again, we see the lovely trick of specifying murders with firearms, ignoring the actual murder rate. I supposed a murder victim might feel better being killed with a pointed stick than with a gun. But then, England has become such a nutty nanny nation they're actually selling knives without useful points on them, so that no one can get all stabbby with them.

Oh, well the UN! Of course, nothing wrong with them. No sir, they're all for individual freedoms. And they *never fudge their numbers. Yep, no problem there.
Wow. I thought this was america.
It stopped being American a while ago. It's now the United States, which is still a pretty cool place, but the United Statists here have made America a fond memory. And they're working hard to destroy whatever traces of it are left.
Here's the deal, lefties. Americans like guns. And we're not going to give them up. And the constitution says we don't have to. (Not that the government pays any attention to the constitution.) And the history of any given despot always starts with disarming the public. And hundreds of thousands of lives are saved every year by people defending themselves and their property with guns.

The banana shot is the best so far.
I like the apocalyptic mode, Mastodon. Maybe all the pictures should have really scary backgrounds. Or just be scary in general: -

When I was on my way out my mother was dying of cancer. She said, "I wish you weren't so smart so it would be easier for you to accept The Truth."
That really struck me hard. Not in a bad way. I immediately translated it to "The Truth is for stupid people." -

Teacher Who Humiliated Kid With Autism Gets Her Job Back (WTF????)
by Yizuman ini know there was a thread here about this story and i cannot find it.. anyway, here's a follow up story: http://www.disaboom.com/blogs/disabled_politico/archive/2009/06/11/teacher-who-let-students-quot-vote-out-quot-5-year-old-boy-with-asperger-s-syndrome-gets-her-job-back.aspx.
wendy portillo, the kindergarten teacher infamous for permitting neurotypical students to vote a boy with a form of autism out of her class, will keep both her contract with the st. lucie county school district and her tenured status after a unanimous vote by the school board.
portillo is "overjoyed" by the ruling and hopes to return to teaching.. .
