Research can be exhausting
by homeschool in....and i can completely see why so many jw's take what is given to them as opposed to doing their research.
in the appendix on the book (pgs 195-197), it talks about how jesus' name can be pronounced in many different languages, just as our own names may be pronounced differently.
so why do the jw's go solely with the english proncunciation of "jehovah" universally, when really, they could have chosen just to go with yaweh from the get-go, since that is truly the closest to the original yhwh?.

Chalam, I absolutely realize they do not have the "truth", but I used to be very outspoken about that. I am trying again, using a more "open minded" approach, and when certain points are brought up....I can slip my little commentary in there.
Sir82....yes, I realized that you are correct. They different variations of the name. I still don't understand why they didnt just go with Yahweh? They're reasoning makes no sense to me...they are so concerned with people knowing god's name. Yet they go with a name that is more widely accepted, though not correct? Since when did they care about being widely accepted? And if they were the true religion, wouldn't god make sure they knew what his correct name is?

Did a householder ever "break your spirit" at the door?
by kitten whiskers inthe thread on creepiest things at the door got me to thinking about the field service.. when i was having my initial doubts, and keeping up with "theocratic" requirements was hard (we had a new born and a two year old diagnosed with asthma which had us in the hospital several times, and only one vehicle), i had mine broken.. i can't really remember what the man said.
he was angry and took out all of his frustrations on me.
i had never been so abused before.

It took a reeeeeaLLy long time for me to realize, but when I was about 6 or 7, I went to a door with my mother. The man started yelling at my mother about how ridiculous and crude and inappropriate it was to bring a child like myself out on an early Saturday morning. I automatically thought it was the "persecution" that Jesus foretold, and it was a memory for a very long time. It was one of the millions of things that made me question the jw faith

When Debating With Witnesses- Is Arguing Doctrine Beneficial ? Steve Hassan
by flipper inmy wife and i have been reading " releasing the bonds " by steve hassan and it makes some interesting points about assisting people to get out of any cult.
notice this excerpt from chapter 6 from the book.
hassan states, " it is also important to understand that in most bible -based cults, although the member is aggressively taught doctrine, it is not the doctrine that holds him in the group.

I totally hear what you're saying....for the past six years, we've had a totally authentic, REAL relationship. And we never talked about religion (from MY standpoint, anyway) because 6 years ago, I assured her that I thought the jw's were full of CRAP & that I would never ever ever EVER go back to the KH or the Jw's. (I had no proof or evidence at that point, just feelings). But now I'm a different person...totally calm & laid back (except for some of my rants on jwn, hehe). It's time. I already know this is going to be one of my biggest challenges ever, and I have to fight my impatience.

Studying "What Does the Bible Really Teach?"
by homeschool ini can't believe it.

ooooooh boy...this is going to be harder than I thought. We haven't even gotten to chapter 2 yet...I really need to record it on my mp3 player. She's goooooood. And by goooooood, I mean- she knows how much I question everything. So when we/I finish reading the paragraph, she asks the question like "ok, according to the jw teaching." Or, "according to this book". Or, "if you were to imagine that God was real and his name is Jehovah, How would you answer this?" She said if I am not comfortable saying the name Jehovah, I am welcome to say YahWeh instead (i'm not going to because I feel like that would be kinda asking for an arguement and make her think I'm being rebellious). Paragraphs 20-24 were a bit tough because I had to state my views without sounding rebellious.
22 As you learn more from the Bible, you may find that some well-meaning people will urge you to stop such studies. They may worry that you will change your beliefs. But do not let anyone stop you from forming the best friendship you can ever have.
23 Of course, there will be things that you do not understand at first. It can be a little humbling to ask for help, but do not hold back because of embarrassment. Jesus said that it is good to be humble, like a little child. (Matthew 18:2-4) And children, as we know, ask a lot of questions. God wants you to find the answers. The Bible praises some who were eager to learn about God. They checked carefully in the Scriptures to make sure that what they were learning was the truth.—Acts 17:11.
24 The best way to learn about Jehovah is to examine the Bible. It is different from any other book. In what way? The next chapter will consider that subject. The question says something like "what will some well meaning people urge you to do, but what should you do?
I said "Well, I've heard a lot of people dont want their loved ones studying with Jehovah's Witnesses because they don't believe the jw's use proper use of bible scriptures" .
I'll fill you in later. I've seriously got to watch my body language. Psychology intrigues me....I realized almost 3/4ths through the study that I was doing almost everything that shows you're nervous or unsure/skeptical...bit my nails, twiddled with my hair, rubbed my neck, didn't make eye contact at all times.
Wish me luck on Monday's study!
