I believe I remember Leo suggesting the New Jerusalem Bible in a previous post and given her scholarly contributions here, I'd consider that translation as worthy of merit.

Anyone here on their own found a bible most true to original language?
by EndofMysteries inokay, let alone which scrolls it was translated from, in reading a hebrew scriptures old testament interlinear, i am not too happy.
it shows the hebrew word, the english translation, then the phrase in it's bible.
genesis 5:2 - he created them male and female, and blessed them and called them adam in the day they were created.

Jephthah's Daughter
by cantleave ini have read somewhere that jephthah's daughter did not really go into temple service but was a victim of ritual sacrifice.
the bible says that after weeping over her virginity that the maidens would visit her annually.
how could they visit her if she was killed?.

Cantleave: Check out this thread which has a pretty interesting discussion of the topic. Basically, it is a NWT rendering that makes it sound like the Jewish women would "commend" Jephthah's daughter once a year--other translations render the word "lament over," meaning they annually commemorated the day of her death.

January 2009 Awake - Where is the quote source listed?
by AdaMakawee ini just took my dog out for a walk and found an awake laying on the ground, all wet where someone threw it.
so i picked it up because i thought it would be worth a few laughs.
i'm absolutely stunned by the amount of statements they make, statitstics they quote without naming a source.

I think there are many who do not 100% believe everything they're told to accept.
You know it. Or, like my husband, deliberately choose to look the other way
Welcome, misery, great to hear to from you. Please tell us more if and when you're ready.

by AggieNostic infirst new topic for me.. i have observed this site for about 4 years.
haven't been to a meeting since oct 2005. definitely feel jws are a high control group that mirrors many of the definitions of a cult.. i was raised as a witness since age 5, left at age 38, now 43. happily married to a wonderful woman for 24 years, except for 1 year of separation when i was failing miserable in a search for my true self - hard to do when you were completely sucked into this religion.
yes, i was a true believer pretty much up into my late 30s.

Aggie: Welcome--my story is so close to yours except I'm female and didn't get married until late 20s. But we're the same age and our parents sound exactly the same. I'll be interested to hear what led to the blinders falling off. And while Lease's comments re your kids going to college is great, don't think it's too late for you! So many on the forum make a degree their first stop after leaving the Borg. Looking forward to hearing the rest of your story.

While Mr. Flipper's idea is provocative and not without merit, I think the $$ is probably just going to printing literature and building KHs in third world countries. If you look at the stats, all the increase is in Africa and other dirt poor places where donations have got to be nil. Yet they're pumping through the literature there and building branches, etc. Plus the donations are down in countries where people actually have a bit of $$--I suspect the WTBS is living off their capital. Just a guess.

OTWO and Blondie are both right--while non-profit laws are pretty explicit about ownership, the BOD of the non-profit basically controls the assets, though they or the non-profit corp technically do not "own" them. So this KH shell-game reorganization is a very slick way of increasing the amount of $$ under the control of the Org.

Emailed Talk From Governing Body Member Last Weekend
by tryingtoexit inwhat's good a-ebody??
just thought i'd share this email with yall real quick.
it still amazes me that i was a jehovah's witness for 27 years and never thought twice about these types of talks other than i need to make sure my act is together when the end comes, and now i can't even read/hear it without getting mad.

This is troubling on so many levels, I don't know where to start.
So I won't. Except to say to Carla that this is an example of classic cult strategy: We're speaking for God (ie inspired) when we want you to obey us. We're imperfect men when we get something wrong. It's perfect, isn't it? No accountability. Absolutely none. It's like this business with the planned expansion of Walkill that, according to a letter read in our KH a week or 2 back, said would take "several years" to complete. And I turned to my husband and hissed, "But Armaggedon's "imminent"!!!" This org has no accountability for how they use words, tossing around canards like "the time left is reduced" and "imminent" but none of these JW ever say, "Wait a f*ckin' minute--you've been saying "imminent" and "reduced" for the last f*ckin' century..."
No, I'm not going to start. There!!
Now, if y'all excuse me, I have a research paper to finish....
