HAHAHAHA!! Wonderful job! You didn't clue them in to your aposta-status, but used what you "read online" for your knowledge base. THAT is what kept them talking instead of running for the hills! They wanted to prove what you "read" to be wrong. But, you may have just helped at least one of them to THINK. Seems the daughter may have been the one to give some thought to what you said, possibly the mother as well.

Ding dong with 4 JWs this morning
by Qcmbr inthe jws were out in our area this morning and i bolted downstairs before my wife could waive them away as she normally does.. two ladies (mum and 24 year old daughter i later found out) initially stopped as i opened with a comment about how i couldn't trust a thing they say because they are taught to practice theocratic warfare.. the mother blinked and asked me what that was ( so it began ) i informed them both that they are allowed to lie or at least be evasive with the truth with worldy people.
she countered that they are taught not to lie so i again asked her if she knew what theocratic warfare meant and she again said no (first of my many - 'please go look that up' statements .).
i then moved onto the idea that they couldn't think independently outside the organisation due to fear of being disfellowshipped and shunned.

The more stories I read on JWN make me long to go back to the hall...
by serenitynow! ini read the stories of those stuck in, or those who are out but still experience unwelcome, intrusive visits from dubs and i want to go to your hall.
or be at your house when the jackass elders come over.
i could say all the things you want to but can't because you're afraid to out yourself, or because you are just really nice.

I agree with WT Wizard about moving. BEST decision I ever made. Haven't heard from a non-family JW in half a year!! I changed my phone number as well. Sure, my ex could give the elders in my old congregation my address, but I doubt they'd make any effort to find me. And if they did? Who says I have to admit to who I am??

Cut them in half, steam them... then in a saute pan, melt half a stick of butter and the juice of a lemon. Let the butter and lemon heat until it starts to brown slightly...add in the cooked sprouts, salt and pepper to taste. Toss until well coated and serve. It really is yummy! I've turned many a sprout-hater into a sprout lover with this recipe!

sizemik, I think there is still a fear of death that's natural to us as humans. Other species clearly don't WANT to die, as is evidenced by the lengths they will go to for survival. Certain prey animals, for instance, are known to not show signs of severe illness because it would make them more apt to be picked off. None of us wants to die and that's just...normal. Like I said, I'm not afraid of BEING dead, but I do have a certain element of fear when I think about HOW I might die. Death isn't pleasant, whether it's from old age, illness, or an accident. Though some forms are easier than others, I suppose.

LeavingWT: Why Never Discuss Doctrine?
by InterestedOne inamong the various helpful pieces of advice i have read here from leavingwt, i have noticed that he often tells people to never discuss doctrine with a jw.
i realize that discussing doctrine with a jw can be very frustrating, but i was wondering if there is a more far-reaching and less-obvious reason for this advice.
like is it related to some peculiar aspect of the jw mind that the average person would not be aware of?.

By discussing their doctrine, you basically are opening yourself up to be labeled as an apostate right off the bat. The Society and it's writings are NOT to be questioned nor discussed in any manner other than agreement. It makes them uncomfortable and automatically their defenses go up and their mind shuts down.
Example: I attempted to explain to my mother why 1914 means nothing. Why the 607 date is false. Why the org couldn't have been chosen. This was a clear mistake. Why? Because her brain screamed "NO NO NO!!!" and she got SCARED of me. I was going against her beloved organization in my speech, and thus, against Jehovah himself. She accused me of trying to "tear her away from her god". She accused me of reading apostate things on "that internet!!" and said that because I no longer go to meetings, I don't see things clearly. She even looked up a part in the Revelation book about needing the organization in order to have Holy Spirit to understand the "deep things" of the Bible.
But the UN scandal?? She wanted to see PROOF of that! I showed her. I printed out the UN's own words and showed her. She said "Well, that's the Wild Beast of Revelation! Of COURSE they would lie about Jehovah's organization!!". BUT she didn't accuse me of apostasy and she was willing to listen and see evidence that I provided.
When I discussed scandals and things that were going on, she was all ears and wanted proof. When I discussed DOCTRINE, she accused me of being a tool of Satan and kicked me out of her room saying "I can't talk to you... I can't even LOOK at you right now!".
So...yeah...that's my experience with discussing doctrine.

I'm not afraid of being dead. I'm of the belief that SOMETHING, some energy from us, goes on after death. You can't kill energy. It's what we're made of. It has to go somewhere (that's just my non-university-educated opinion, mind you). Heaven and Hell? Nah...those don't exist. My "Heaven" would be staying around for awhile and watching my children have children...being around them ALL the time without the barriers of distance and someone telling me I can't.
I also believe in re-incarnation. That person you met that you just "clicked" with...the person you started dating that you feel like you've known your whole life...I believe you HAVE known them you're whole EXISTANCE and that's why they are so familiar to you. Your energies have been intertwined in the past. For instance, my mother may have been my daughter in a past life...I have felt more like the rational adult in our relationship than I have the child. My boyfriend? Well, he may have been my husband through several past lives, who knows? I look in his eyes and I KNOW him. He feels like home. I don't know WHY he's so familiar to me...he was from the moment I met him. We've been inseparable ever since. I've read several case studies involving past life regression and most people describe eerily similar experiences following their deaths. Some people think it's a load of bullshit (in fact, I had a guy I work with call it just that...he's a Christian, so I asked him how it is that he can believe good people's spirits go to heaven, but that they cannot come back as someone else...how is that not crazy thinking as well? His answer "There are lots of examples of people who died and came back and saw heaven"... Mine: "Yes, and there are lots of examples of people who have died and REMEMBERED their deaths from their past lives and what they described was very much like what those who had out of body experiences described...So how is one more plausible than the other?". Silence. LOL). I'm still reading and researching the concept, but it "feels" right. And it's a purely scientific thing...no hocus-pocus or god needed. I'm still an Atheist LOL.

Kids say the darndest things.
by Open mind incute little story i thought you might enjoy.
my teenage, non-true-believing son was recently baby sitting for some jw relatives so they could enjoy a nice evening dining out with my wife and i. the jw parents of the little kids are very liberal and we enjoy their company from time to time.
anyway, my son had just one ethical dilemma facing him as he contemplated his evening with the kids.

HA that's cute! She knew how it went, but hell if she was going to say it herself! I love that innocent age...where they have an opinion, facts are facts, and they also have no filter LOL.

WTWizard, I agree with you about being somewhere where no one knows you or that you were once a JW. I haven't actually run into ANY where I am, although I know they are around. I live in a complex that doesn't allow door-to-door work by ANY church (we did have a new church that was just handing out slips with their meeting times, but they were neighbors who live in the complex and were just inviting people), so the most I get at my door is a menu from the new pizza joint down the street. Certain people know I was a JW, but only because I mentioned it in the negative...and they are more than happy to assist me in adjusting to REALITY.

LOL watersprout, I think so too! It's so strange because I feel them before I see them! The hair on the back of my neck stands up and I get that nervousness in the pit of my stomach. I really do think it's negative energy that surrounds the organization and the places they meet.

watersprout: I do that scream as well...Usually when I'm being playful or joking.
The last time I saw JW's out and about was before I moved out of state. It's weird because I KNEW they were JW's just from their clothing and the way they carried themselves. I think, honestly, my first reaction was of fear and revulsion (not at them PERSONALLY, mind you...at the lifestyle. Maybe a bit of PTSD?)
Funny story, when I first moved here, BF was taking me around and showing me where he grew up. All of a sudden, my spidey senses started tingling and my mood went south. He asked me what was wrong and I really didn't know! About 10 seconds later, we drove past a building with a large parking lot. I didn't see ANY signage because we drove by so fast... Mind you, there's a church on every corner out here in the buckle of the Bible Belt, but I just got an eerie feeling and I told him "Babe? Go back... I bet you ANYTHING that was a Kingdom Hall!" Sure enough, the sign was back a bit from the road, and it wasn't a style of hall I'd ever seen before, but it WAS a Kingdom Hall!
I looked at him and said "How the hell did I just "know" something was wrong in this area??"
