I agree. I felt the same way about Religulous.I thought it was funny, but even as he was running through it I was thinking "That's wrong - that's an exageration, you took that out of context, etc". The trouble is that many people watch these pieces, thinking they are trustworthy documentaries and never bother researching what has been fed them.
Confirmation bias is a bitch.

put more bluntly, whose vision of the future of christianity is correct: the conservative, literal baptists or the modern, liberal episcopalians?
I think I know what Wildflower is saying. Christ didn't create Christianity, the word or the concept. The word didn't even come into usage until after he died. People who believed a variety of things, even back in the first century, finally started to name themselves Christians.
Then again, without "Christians", would Christ be Christ? Or would anyone know about it?
If a savior martyrs himself and noone writes about it and tells others, does it have any value?
Gods have a symbiotic relationship with their adherents. One can't exist without the other propping the other up, in a circular support system that can't be verified by any other source. Which came first, the Christian or the Christ? ;)

McLaren is advocating a different, perhaps upgraded form of Christianity that takes a more objective view of history and employs a better interpretation of the Bible.

i am really on the fence on this issue right now and would love some opinions.. i find that i dont sit down and read the bible for long periods since becoming inactive, but on the other hand, individual scriptures mean much more to me now.. i will sit down and look up some favorite passages from time to time and feel like its the first time i really "got it" - without the jw goggles on.
i love matthew chapter 23, since i think it describes to a tee the situation in jw congregations.
i think if jesus returned today, he would blast the elders and "leaders" of the borg in a similar fashion (along with most religious leaders) .matthew 24 is actually more interesting to me now, simply because my whole life was waiting for the 1914 generation to end sometime during the reagan era!
Initially it reenergized me - I was determined to read it without the filter, without the ridiculous arguments presented by the WTS - just me, the bible, and I figured I was going to get this relationship with Jesus that I'd heard these ex-JWs talking about.
I read it, kept reading it, and continued to get more disillusioned. What was I reading? This was a book of atrocities, not God's love. I decided I needed to research the historical validity of the bible, was shocked at what I found.
Reading the bible, with a careful eye, and without the benefit of carefully constructed apologetics, killed my appreciation for the bible. I don't see how it could do otherwise for any thinking person.

Jesus seems to be an aspect or personification of God himself in many scriptures, with equal power and ability for all intents and purposes as they say in legal documents, although since we can understand Jesus a lot easier than some super being floating around invisibly somewhere, Christians sure can relate to Jesus better as a way to worship God, which may the the whole point.
